Season 5 lands on Wednesday, November 26, and the final battle is almost here. Before the story picks up again, here’s a full Stranger Things Season 4 recap to get every storyline straight.
Season 4 opens in 1979, with Dr Brenner starting what looks like a normal day at Hawkins National Laboratory. The corridors are filled with numbered children training their powers, until screams echo down the hall. When Brenner steps out, he finds the staff and kids slaughtered. Only Eleven is left standing in the Rainbow Room, blood streaming from her nose and eyes, surrounded by bodies. The show leaves the question hanging: Did she do this?
We jump to 1986. In Lenora Hills, California, Joyce is selling encyclopedias from home while keeping an eye on Eleven, Will, and Jonathan, who have tried to build a new life far from Hawkins. Eleven writes upbeat letters to Mike about school and California, but the reality is ugly. Her powers are gone, and she is relentlessly bullied, especially by Angela and her friends.
Back in Indiana, Mike and Dustin have joined Eddie Munson’s beloved D&D group, the Hellfire Club, while Lucas has pivoted to basketball in search of popularity. His new teammates include captain Jason Carver, whose girlfriend, Chrissy, is the archetypal cheerleader on the surface, and deeply unsettled underneath. Max, still shattered after Billy’s death at Starcourt, has withdrawn from her friends and is living with her mum in a small trailer on the edge of town.
Spring break in California and the Hellfire Club
As spring break approaches, the group is more fractured than ever. Mike stays in Hawkins, focused on Hellfire campaigns with Dustin. Lucas is torn between the championship basketball game and the Hellfire finale that needs him as a player. When he chooses the game, Dustin and Mike recruit Erica as their last-minute replacement.
Steve is working at the video store and has slipped back into casual dating, while Robin, still his best friend, has a quiet crush on band-mate Vickie and no idea how to act on it.
In California, Eleven’s problems escalate. Angela humiliates her in the school courtyard, smashing her project on Hopper. Eleven tries to respond with powers that just aren’t there. When Mike finally arrives for a visit and they head to the roller rink, Angela and her crew turn the night into a public spectacle, mocking Eleven in front of everyone. Cornered and furious, Eleven lashes out and hits Angela in the face with a skate, an attack serious enough that the police step in. She is arrested for assault just as Joyce disappears to follow a new lead.
Chrissy, Eddie and the first Vecna killing
The new monster’s path into Hawkins begins with Chrissy. She hears a grandfather clock tolling where it shouldn’t be and sees distorted visions of her house, her mother’s face rotting before her eyes. Alone and terrified, she meets Eddie in the woods to buy drugs. Eddie, who remembers a gentler Chrissy from middle school, tries to reassure her and offers something stronger to help her escape the feeling that she is “going crazy”.
Later, at his trailer in Forest Hills (across from Max’s new place), Eddie searches for the drugs while Chrissy slips fully into Vecna’s grasp. In her mind, she is trapped in a twisted version of her family home, chased by a humanoid creature who speaks to her, knows her name, and promises an end to her pain. In the real world, Eddie watches in horror as she levitates, her bones snap, and her face caves in. He bolts from the trailer in shock, just as Max notices him racing off and later catches a glimpse of Chrissy’s mangled body.
The police immediately treat Eddie as the prime suspect. Jason, hungover from winning the championship, is pulled from breakfast with the team to be told that Chrissy is dead. His grief quickly hardens into rage.
Joyce’s Russian doll and Hopper’s prison ordeal
Across the country, Joyce receives a mysterious parcel from Russia, containing an eerie porcelain doll. Sensing trouble, she calls Murray for backup. He instructs her to break it open from a safe distance. Inside is no bomb, but a message: Hopper is alive.
We then see what happened after the Starcourt explosion. Hopper survived the blast by falling to a lower platform, only to be captured by the Russians and shipped to a brutal prison camp in Kamchatka. There, he works on a chain gang and suffers routine torture.
The note inside Joyce’s doll is from a guard calling himself Enzo. He offers to free Hopper in return for a large cash payment. Murray is suspicious, but Joyce is convinced and flies to Alaska to deliver the money to Enzo’s contact, Yuri. Yuri, however, chooses profit over promises and plans to turn Hopper, Enzo, Joyce and Murray over to the KGB.
Eleven’s bullying, the roller rink, and Dr Owens’s offer
Back in Lenora, the fallout from the roller rink incident is swift. The police charge Eleven, and with Joyce off chasing a possible Hopper lead, Mike, Wil,l and Jonathan can only watch as she is processed.
Under pressure from the military, Dr Owens intervenes. The army believes Eleven is responsible for the new disturbances in Hawkins and wants to eliminate the threat. Owens is convinced she is the only person who can stop what’s coming. He quietly pulls her from the system and offers a deal: go with him, try to regain her powers, and help save her friends.
Eleven agrees. Owens takes her to a secret underground facility in Nevada. There, she discovers that “Papa” is still alive. Brenner is running a new program built around a machine called Nina, a giant sensory deprivation tank designed to force her to relive repressed memories and rebuild the mental pathways that fuel her powers.
Max becomes Vecna’s next target
In Hawkins, Nancy starts chasing the Chrissy story for the school paper. With Fred at her side, she heads to the trailer park. As she works, Fred starts seeing his own visions: a ruined car, accusing faces, the cop’s features twisting into a corpse. He is carrying guilt over a fatal hit-and-run accident, and Vecna seizes on it. Later, alone in the woods, Fred hears the same clock, is dragged into a nightmare, and dies with the same shattered body as Chrissy.
Max, meanwhile, notices a pattern. She realizes Chrissy and Fred both saw the school counselor, Ms Kelley, before they died. Breaking into the office, she finds that they reported similar symptoms: headaches, nosebleeds, nightmares, and a strange voice. Max has all of them, too. Outside, she sees the clock in the hallway freeze and splinter. She understands what it means: she is next.
The group moves fast. Lucas slips away from the basketball crew, who are now convinced Hellfire is a satanic cult and Eddie a proxy for the devil. Nancy and Robin pose as psychology students to interview Victor Creel at Pennhurst, the man Wayne Munson mentioned, whose family died in the 1950s under bizarre circumstances. Victor’s story of a “demon” that attacked his family mirrors what’s happening in Hawkins.
Max, knowing time is running out, writes letters to her friends and family. She asks Lucas, Dustin, and Steve to take her to Billy’s grave, where she reads a raw goodbye, admitting her guilt and anger. While she speaks, Vecna moves in, dragging her into his world. In the vision, Billy tells her she wanted him dead and that deep down she wants to follow him.
Just as she is strapped to Vecna’s mind-lair, Nancy and Robin relay Victor’s crucial detail to Dustin: music can cut through the trance. The boys slam Max’s Walkman on her ears and play her favourite song, “Running Up That Hill”. The track tears open a window back to the real graveyard. With the song blaring and memories of her friends flashing past, Max rips herself free and sprints toward the light. She crashes back into her body, alive but marked. For now, Vecna has failed.
Prison breaks, Demogorgons, and the Nina Project
In Russia, Hopper and Enzo are thrown into a cell together and discover the camp’s real horror: the guards are feeding prisoners to a captured Demogorgon. Joyce and Murray, having overpowered Yuri mid-flight and crashed with him into the snow, force him to help them infiltrate the prison rather than sell them out. Disguised as officials, they arrive just as Hopper and other prisoners are pushed into the arena. Through a mix of timing, flamethrowers, and cattle prods, they manage to keep Hopper alive and eventually free him.
Back in Nevada, Nina drags Eleven through her own past. She relives days of training at the lab, bullying from other numbered children, and the presence of a quiet orderly who seems sympathetic. He tells her he was once like her and hints that he can help her escape. He is, in fact, One, Henry Creel, the first child Brenner experimented on.
Eleven eventually removes the device, suppressing his powers. Once freed, One systematically murders the other children and staff, leaving the massacre Brenner saw in 1979. When Eleven confronts him, he explains that he killed his mother and sister years ago, framed his father, and was taken by Brenner after falling into a coma. Now he wants Eleven as an ally in a wider war against the world.
She refuses. In their psychic fight in the Rainbow Room, she taps into an early memory of seeing her mother for the first time. That memory fuels a surge of power that blasts One through the wall, tearing open the first gate to the Upside Down. As he falls, lightning reshapes him into the burned, twisted creature later known as Vecna.
When Eleven surfaces from Nina after this final memory, her powers are back.
Upside Down Hawkins and the truth about the frozen year
In Hawkins, Dustin’s compass goes haywire again, pointing away from true north. He realises the same thing happened back when the original gate at Hawkins Lab was active. The kids follow the distortion to Lover’s Lake, where Patrick is killed mid-pursuit of Eddie, his body snapped in front of Jason’s eyes. With multiple deaths and rumours of cult activity spreading, Eddie is publicly named, and Hawkins falls into full satanic panic.
Steve dives into the lake to check a disturbance and is hauled through a gate at the bottom into the Upside Down. Nancy, Robin, and Eddie follow. On the surface, Max, Lucas, Dustin, and Erica pull police attention away from the water. Trapped in the shadow version of Hawkins, the older teens fight off Demobats and make it to Nancy’s house, hoping to grab her guns.
They discover a problem: the Upside Down is frozen in time. Everything in Nancy’s room is exactly as it was on November 6, 1983, the day Will first vanished. The guns she later stored there don’t exist in this version yet, so they’re unarmed. Using flashing lights and a Lite-Brite, they manage to communicate with the kids in the real world, who realise there is a small gate in Eddie’s trailer. Robin and Eddie escape through it. Before Nancy and Steve can follow, Vecna locks Nancy in a vision, forcing her to watch his memories as Henry, then One, then the monster.
He shows her his long game: the gates he’s opening with each kill, the cracks converging to split Hawkins and let the Upside Down flood in. Then he sends her back to deliver the warning.
Salt baths, ‘Master of Puppets, ’ and the final fight in the Creel house
By now, Mike, Will, Jonathan, and Argyle have survived an attack on the Byers’ house, watched Owens’s agents die protecting them, and driven to Utah to find Suzie. She uses the “phone number” the dying agent left them to hack into Owens’s system and pull the coordinates of the Nina site. From there, the group tracks tyre marks across the desert and stumbles onto the ruins of the lab just as the military attacks.
Brenner tries to flee with a sedated Eleven but is shot from a helicopter. Eleven breaks free and uses her restored powers to bring the aircraft crashing down. Mike and the others reach her in Argyle’s van. She says goodbye to Brenner in the desert and leaves him to die, then climbs into the van and listens as Will and Mike fill her in on Vecna and Max.
The party in Hawkins, knowing help won’t arrive in time, decides to act without waiting. The plan is simple on paper. Max will offer herself as bait, lowering the walls in her mind so that Vecna will return. Lucas will stay beside her with Kate Bush ready in case she gets lost again. Erica will guard the outside of the Creel house. Dustin and Eddie will go into the Upside Down and pull the Demobats away from Vecna’s body, giving Nancy, Steve, and Robin a clear path to burn him.
In Nevada, Eleven insists she can still help from afar. At Surfer Boy Pizza in Argyle, Jonathan and Will flood a dough-proving freezer with water and salt to improvise a new sensory tank. Eleven “piggybacks” into Vecna’s mind through Max, entering her memories at the Snow Ball dance.
As Max wanders the school gym in her own head, Vecna appears and starts his attack, breaking bones and cutting off her sight and hearing. In the real attic of the Creel house, Jason and the basketball boys storm in and find Max suspended in a trance. Jason pulls a gun on Lucas, convinced that satanic rituals are involved, and the two fight as the floor begins to crack.
In the Upside Down, Dustin and Eddie pull off their distraction: Eddie climbs onto the trailer roof and tears into “Master of Puppets” on his guitar, drawing a cloud of bats. After they retreat indoors, Eddie chooses not to run this time. He heads back out to keep the swarm away from the gate, buying more time. Dustin tries to follow but injures his leg jumping through the portal. By the time he reaches Eddie, his friend is dying from countless bites.
Inside Max’s mind, Vecna pins both her and Eleven in his lair and lays out his plan: four gates, one for each of his kills, will tear open Hawkins and join the worlds. He doesn’t resent Eleven for sending him to the Upside Down; he credits her. Down there, he found the Mind Flayer particles and shaped them, sending the Demogorgons through in previous seasons to set his larger design in motion.
While he monologues, Nancy, Steve, and Robin push through the Upside Down Creel house, only to be trapped by choking vines when Vecna tightens his hold on Max. Back in the pizza kitchen, Mike sees Eleven faltering and finally manages to say what she needs to hear. He tells her he loves her, with or without powers, and believes she can fight.
That jolt of conviction lets Eleven break free of her bindings. She rips Vecna away from Max and slams him against a pillar. The vines loosen around Nancy, Steve, and Robin, who move quickly, dousing Vecna’s physical body with Molotov cocktails. Nancy then unloads a sawn-off shotgun into him. The blast throws him through an upstairs window. When they reach the yard, his body is gone.
Eddie dies in Dustin’s arms in the Upside Down, proud that he finally stood his ground. In the real Creel house, Lucas knocks Jason out, but he is seconds too late. Vecna has already broken Max’s limbs and stopped her heart. As the clock tolls for the fourth time, the four gate fissures carve through Hawkins, slicing the town apart and killing Jason where he lies.
Eleven, still in the void, refuses to accept Max’s death. She reaches into the darkness where Max should be and pulls, restarting her heart. Max survives but falls into a deep coma.
Hawkins breaks, and what’s left standing
Two days later, Hawkins is officially a disaster zone. News reports blame a massive earthquake. Residents pack up and leave; others crowd into the high school’s shelters. The state puts up relief tents. Rumours swirl about cults and judgement day.
The Byers brothers, Argyle, Eleven, and Mike, return to a ruined town and head to the hospital, where Max lies unconscious in traction. The doctors don’t know if she will ever wake. When Eleven tries to find Max in the psychic space, she encounters only emptiness.
At Hawkins High, Robin, Steve, and Dustin help with relief efforts. Robin finally gets an honest conversation with Vickie, who seems open to something more. Jonathan and Nancy reunite and circle around all the conversations they are not yet having about college, the future, and Steve.
Dustin tracks down Wayne Munson at a donation drive and tells him what he can: that Eddie died saving a town that never understood him. Eddie remains a pariah in the public story, blamed for murders and the “earthquake”, but his uncle at least hears about his courage.
Outside town, Hopper’s cabin becomes a new base. Nancy leads the effort to patch it up so the Byers family and Eleven have somewhere to live. In the middle of the work, a car pulls up. Owens’s people have made good on their promise, and Joyce and Hopper step out. Hopper and Eleven finally see each other again. They compare shaved heads and hug, a reunion she has been waiting for since the mall.
The victory is incomplete. Will feels a familiar chill in his neck and knows Vecna is not gone. From a hill above the town, the group looks out over Hawkins. Ash drifts in the air. The grass and flowers around them blacken and die. Red lightning cracks in a roiling cloud over the town as the Upside Down begins to bleed fully into the real world.
