Netflix’s Ruth & Boaz begins with Naomi who frames the story as both witness and reluctant narrator.
Her son, Marlon (Chaundre Hall-Broomfield), had been dating Ruth Moably (Serayah) for a few months, but Naomi never approved. To her, Ruth seemed like just another pretty face, not someone worthy of her son’s steady heart.
Ruth’s life, however, had been anything but simple. Abandoned by her mother at five on the steps of a church, she grew up in foster care and carved out a place for herself through music. Singing was her passion, but her career became controlled by Syrus (James Thomas), a ruthless manager who bankrolled her rise and treated her artistry as a debt. Ruth wanted to reclaim her voice and make songs with meaning again, but when she tried to quit, Syrus reminded her that walking away had consequences.
Those consequences arrived in the most brutal way: Marlon and his father, Eli (Gregory Alan Williams), were ambushed and killed in an attack Syrus later claimed as payback, a warning that he could always find Ruth if she tried to escape. The loss shattered Naomi, and left Ruth terrified, grieving, and desperate to disappear.

Ruth & Boaz Recap: A Run Toward Safety and a Fragile Alliance
At the funeral, Naomi also learned her family’s wealth was collapsing. Eli’s bad investments left everything in foreclosure except an old house in Pegram, Tennessee, protected in Naomi’s name.
There, amid condolences, Syrus confronted Ruth directly: if she tried to rebuild her life elsewhere, he would follow, and this time he would take what she loved next. Shaken, Ruth prayed for guidance. Quietly, she left cash and a goodbye note for Breana, then followed Naomi back to Tennessee even when Naomi tried to push her away. “Wherever you go, I go,” Ruth tells her, refusing to leave Naomi alone in grief.
Life in Pegram starts tense. Naomi’s distrust lingers, but Ruth works tirelessly, helping repair the old house and earning the respect of locals. She takes a seasonal job as a grape picker at Azra Winery, where her work ethic catches the eye of Bo Azra, Boaz (Tyler Lepley), the vineyard’s hardworking owner, who is struck by her determination. Lena (a new friend) steps in to cover for Ruth when someone recognizes her singing, and soon Ruth is offered a more permanent spot for the season.

Building a New Life: Music, Love, and Secrets
One night at a local bar, Lena signs Ruth up for karaoke. Ruth’s performance silences the room and stirs something deep in Boaz, who later flirts with her, only to have Ruth bristle when she learns he owns the vineyard, suspecting favoritism. Still, their connection grows. Boaz introduces Ruth to producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, encouraging her to rediscover her music on her own terms.
Slowly, Naomi softens. Pastor Charles (a family friend) and the community rally to help fix the house, and Naomi starts to see Ruth as more than the girl she once mistrusted. But Ruth carries a heavy secret: she knows Syrus caused Marlon’s death, and guilt keeps her from fully opening up.
Romance sparks quietly. Boaz invites Ruth to dinner; in an intimate scene, he washes her feet and they crush grapes together. They kiss, but Ruth hesitates, afraid to bring pain into his life. Naomi comforts her afterward, though Ruth confesses she doesn’t believe she gets to be happy.

Syrus Returns: Threats, Fire, and Confrontation
Naomi’s health falters, landing her in the hospital after a blood pressure spike. Meanwhile, Syrus resurfaces, asking questions at the bar where Ruth once sang. Boaz senses the danger and stays silent to protect her. Naomi urges Ruth not to let fear steal her future and admits she sees something special between her and Boaz.
At the town festival, Ruth sings a love song for Boaz, but spots Syrus watching. That night part of the winery burns, a clear warning.
Ruth plans to leave, convinced that staying will only put Naomi and Boaz in greater danger. Boaz protests, but she insists on protecting the woman who has finally come to accept her. When the police confirm the winery fire was arson and begin asking Boaz if anyone might want to harm him, he realizes the threat is real, Syrus is likely behind it, and may already be closing in on Ruth. Officers head toward Naomi’s house just as Syrus arrives, determined to drag Ruth back to Atlanta.

Before she goes, Ruth breaks down and finally tells Naomi the truth: Syrus was the one who had Marlon and Eli killed after she tried to leave the music business. She explains that running to Tennessee was never just about starting over, it was about keeping Naomi safe from the man who ruined her life. The confession shatters the distance that long stood between them, even as danger closes in.
A violent confrontation follows. Syrus shoves Naomi to the ground when she tries to block him at the door. Boaz arrives and fights Syrus and his bodyguard, holding them off long enough for Naomi to act. Rising to her feet, Naomi fires a warning shot and shouts that she has already lost a husband and a son, she will not lose her daughter too, and the next bullet will not miss. Syrus backs down as the police arrive and take him into custody.

Healing, Faith, and a New Beginning
Afterward, Naomi tells Ruth she saved her life simply by coming back and being family. She wishes Ruth had trusted her sooner but finally offers full acceptance and love. Boaz admits he should have listened to what Ruth wasn’t saying, that his success means nothing if it costs him the chance to love her.
Back at the rebuilt winery, Ruth opens one of Boaz’s 2017 reserve bottles thought ruined in the fire. The wine is not only drinkable but better than before. Boaz enters it into competition; it wins Best in Show and is renamed R&B, for Ruth and Boaz. The couple marry, Ruth restarts her music career, and Naomi narrates their story as one of faith and resilience: love doesn’t always begin with fireworks; sometimes it rises from ashes. Faith, hope, and love remain, and the greatest of these is love.
An original song by Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, performed by Serayah, ties Ruth’s past as an artist to her rebirth in Tennessee.
