Unaccustomed Earth Adds Justin Bartha, Parveen Kaur, and More to Cast

Netflix has added five new names to the ensemble of Unaccustomed Earth, the upcoming drama inspired by Jhumpa Lahiri’s acclaimed short story collection.

Production began last week on the eight-episode series, which is being developed by writer Madhuri Shekar, director Ritesh Batra, and executive producer John Wells in partnership with Warner Bros. Television.

New Additions to the Cast

  • Justin Bartha (Godfather of Harlem, The Good Fight) plays Adam Weiss, the affable husband of Ruma (Freida Pinto). A sci-fi writer and stay-at-home father to Hema, Adam balances artistic daydreaming with his role as a stabilizing presence in the family.
  • Jayant Kripalani (Trikaal, Heat and Dust) takes on Pranab Mukherjee, a retired professor and Bengali Marxist whose late-in-life romance forces him to conceal the truth from his disapproving children.
  • Parveen Kaur (Manifest, Saving Hope) portrays Nina Singh, a Harvard medical student set on achieving perfection in her academic and personal life until doubts about her fiancé shake her resolve.
  • Swayam Bhatia (Succession, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers) plays Sudha Menon, Hema’s outspoken best friend whose humor and confidence make her a vital part of the story’s younger generation.
  • Palomi Ghosh (Typewriter, Hotel Salvation) embodies Anjali Menon, a dance teacher in the Indian community who has rebuilt her life after loss but struggles with her children in ways that cut close to home.

Returning Ensemble

The new additions join previously announced cast members including:

  • Freida Pinto as Ruma, a central figure whose choices ripple through the community.
  • Siddharth in a pivotal role tied to Ruma’s past.
  • Sarayu Blue, Indraneil Sengupta, Adi Roy, and Iyla Sundarsingh Mckaig, rounding out the intergenerational portrait at the heart of the series.

Story and Themes

The series adapts Lahiri’s short stories into a sweeping narrative set within Cambridge, Massachusetts, where an elite Indian American community becomes the stage for scandal, romance, and cultural reckoning.

At the center lies a star-crossed affair between a devoted wife and a long-lost love, sparking tensions that ripple across family lines. With themes of love, desire, generational conflict, and belonging, Unaccustomed Earth brings Lahiri’s nuanced view of diaspora life to the screen in a serialized form.

Creative Team

Madhuri Shekar, known for her work on The Nevers and 3 Body Problem, serves as showrunner and writer. Ritesh Batra directs the first two episodes and lends his sensibility for intimate, character-driven drama. The executive producing team includes Shekar, Batra, John Wells, Jhumpa Lahiri, Nisha Ganatra, Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow, Celia Costas, and others.

The production is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Television and Netflix, ensuring both global reach and a creative foundation tied to Lahiri’s literary legacy.

Why It Matters

Jhumpa Lahiri’s fiction has long been praised for its delicate examination of migration, identity, and fractured family bonds. Bringing Unaccustomed Earth to Netflix marks a rare opportunity to translate her short stories into long-form television, giving space for ensemble performances and layered conflicts to unfold.

The addition of established and emerging talent deepens the project’s resonance, blending Hollywood actors with South Asian voices to reflect the complexity of the community at its center.

Looking Ahead

As production gets underway, Unaccustomed Earth positions itself as one of Netflix’s most ambitious literary adaptations. With an international cast and a creative team anchored by both seasoned television figures and Lahiri herself, the series has the potential to capture the same intimate yet expansive vision that made the original collection a modern classic.
