Last Seen Season 1 Episode 5, “The Prophet,” finally fills in the biggest missing piece of Mags’ disappearance. After spending much of the season following Ian’s desperate search for his daughter, we go back 15 years and discover how Henry and Jenna lost their own child and why Mags became their replacement.
In the present, Ian has survived the shooting, but the same cannot be said for Bill. And after everything that has happened, Ian is no longer willing to wait for someone else to find his daughter.
How Are Donald, Jenna and Henry Connected?
Fifteen years earlier, Donald is trying to stop drinking when he returns to his father’s religious compound. He does not arrive alone. Jenna is his girlfriend, revealing that their relationship began long before she built a life with Henry.
Donald receives a warm welcome at the compound, but being back does little to change how he feels about the place or his father. He does not share the same religious devotion and has plans for a very different future: he wants his own fishing vessel.
His father dismisses that dream, and their already difficult relationship reaches a breaking point. Donald starts drinking again and tries to steal money. When he is caught, he is forced to leave the compound. Jenna makes a different choice.
She has found something there that Donald never could, and she stays behind. Her faith deepens, as does her relationship with Henry. The two eventually marry, and after Jenna inherits a farm, they leave the compound to build a life together.
It is not an easy life, but they have their daughter, Sarah, and then everything changes.
What Happened to the Real Sarah in Last Seen?
Sarah dies in a tragic accident. Her death leaves Jenna devastated, while Henry starts looking for something that could fill the enormous absence she has left behind. That search eventually brings him to Ian and his young daughter.
Henry sees Mags when she accompanies Ian to work. He follows them, waits for an opportunity, and kidnaps her.
He brings Mags home to Jenna as a replacement for Sarah.
The real Sarah, we learn, has been buried in the woods. The girl Henry and Jenna have raised as Sarah for the past 15 years is actually Mags Ridley.
It finally explains one of the season’s central mysteries. Mags was not taken because of something Ian had done or because she had some unknown connection to Henry. Henry chose her after losing his own daughter and took her home to fill the place Sarah had left behind.
Mags has since grown up believing Henry and Jenna are her parents.

Why Does Mags Stay With Jenna and Henry?
Back in the present, Jenna is badly wounded after being shot and is losing blood in the car. Henry leaves to find supplies, giving Jenna and Mags a rare moment alone. Jenna tells her to leave. She knows Mags does not belong with them and urges her to use the opportunity to get away. At first, it appears Mags has listened and escaped, but she comes back.
Whatever Henry did 15 years ago, Jenna is still the only mother Mags remembers. Learning the truth about where she came from cannot erase the life she has known, and she is not ready to abandon Jenna while she is wounded.
So, even with a chance to run, Mags stays with the people who raised her.
For Ian, the situation looks very different.

Ian Survives the Shooting, but Bill Does Not
Ian wakes in the hospital after being wounded in the shooting. He has survived, but Bill has been killed, while Henry, Jenna, and Mags have managed to get away.
Debbie arrives carrying grief that quickly turns toward Ian. Her daughter is still missing, and Bill, the father of the child she is expecting, is now dead. She blames Ian for what has happened and tells him that she is done with him.
It leaves Ian injured, alone, and no closer to bringing Mags home. He does not stay in the hospital; Ian checks himself out and returns home, where he takes a gun and ammunition. Before leaving again, he says goodbye to his son. His next stop is Donald.
Ian finds him and holds him at gunpoint, demanding that he tell him where Henry is going. Will Ian Find Mags?
