Last Seen Episode 4, “The Truth,” finally gives Ian the confirmation he has been fighting for, but getting there puts everyone in danger. As Donald struggles with the secret he’s protecting, Ian turns his attention to Henry, and Jenna reaches the point where she can no longer keep quiet.
Ian Follows Donald Straight to Henry
Ian’s confrontation with Donald at the AA meeting has exactly the effect he wanted. Donald knows his friend has caught him lying and immediately calls Henry, telling his brother that he wants the truth to come out. He doesn’t want to keep deceiving Ian or the police, but Henry convinces him to remain silent.
Ian isn’t waiting around for Donald to confess. He watches from outside and sees Donald meet Henry, giving him a new person to follow.
Henry eventually realizes Ian is behind him. Ian tries to force him off the road, but the confrontation ends badly for Ian when Henry sends his vehicle into a construction area and causes him to crash.
Henry knows the situation is getting harder to control. He rushes home and tells Sarah they need to prepare because the police could be coming.
Sarah still doesn’t understand what her father is hiding, though she’s become increasingly suspicious of the explanations she’s been given. Henry needs her cooperation and wants everyone in the family telling the same story, but there’s another problem: Jenna isn’t there.
Ian survives the crash and goes directly to Detective Pena. This time he has something more concrete to report, telling her that Henry deliberately forced him off the road. That is enough to put more pressure on both brothers.
The Police Question Donald and Sarah
Donald is brought in for questioning, but the guilt he feels doesn’t translate into cooperation. He refuses to give the police what they want.
The interview ends when Henry voluntarily arrives at the station with his own account of what happened on the road. According to him, Ian was the aggressor. Detective Pena isn’t satisfied with leaving things there. She wants to see Henry’s home, and he reluctantly allows it.
Ian accompanies the police but has to remain outside while they speak with the family.
Inside, Pena meets Sarah. The teenager repeats the version of events Henry has instructed her to give, and Henry produces a birth certificate supporting his claim that she is his daughter. For the police, there isn’t enough at that point to prove otherwise.
Ian is furious when they leave, convinced that they are walking away from the person who can finally explain what happened to his daughter.
Henry isn’t nearly as confident. The police visit has shown him how close Ian is getting, and he decides they need to leave. He tells Sarah to prepare to go even if Jenna doesn’t return.
Sarah doesn’t want to leave her home, while Donald also pushes back when he learns what his brother is planning. Henry intends to take Sarah to their old family compound, something Donald clearly doesn’t believe is a good idea.
Still, Henry sees leaving as their best option.
Jenna Can No Longer Keep the Secret
Ian’s investigation appears to hit another wall. Donald won’t talk, and Ian cannot produce enough evidence to prove what he believes about Henry. He shares his suspicions with Debbie and Bill, but conviction alone isn’t enough to move things forward.
Then Jenna appears at Debbie’s store. Whatever Jenna says raises enough new questions to put the focus back on Henry’s family. The encounter also leaves Debbie distressed enough to end up in the hospital.
Ian urges Bill to take what is happening seriously and follow up with Jenna. Bill agrees to return to Henry’s house with him, although Ian is again supposed to stay with the vehicle.
They arrive while Henry is preparing to leave. Bill approaches Henry to talk. Jenna then appears, followed by Sarah, who steps in to protect her mother. Ian sees his opportunity and speaks directly to Sarah, he tells her that she is his daughter and brings her a toy she was obsessed when she was a kid.
Sarah rejects the claim. As far as she knows, Jenna and Henry are her parents, and that is exactly what she tells him; suddenly, Jenna finally breaks the lie. She tells Sarah that she and Henry aren’t her parents.
For Ian, it is the first direct confirmation that his suspicions about the family have been justified. For Sarah, it destroys the story of her life that she has been raised to believe. No one gets time to process it.
Last Seen Episode 4 Ends With a Shooting
With the truth coming out in front of everyone, Henry reaches for a gun. He opens fire, and Bill fires back.
When the shooting stops, Jenna is on the ground wounded, with Sarah desperately trying to help her. Bill has also gone down on the other side of the fence.
The episode does not confirm whether Bill has been killed or injured.
It also stops short of giving Ian the complete answer he has spent years looking for.
