Richmond’s women are finally finding their rhythm on the pitch in Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 8, but their winning run comes with a painful setback for Gemma. Away from football, Roy has something much more personal to figure out after admitting that he still loves Keeley.
“Follow the Anger” also brings an old threat back into Rebecca’s life, even if he hasn’t shown his face yet.
Richmond’s Winning Run Ends Badly for Gemma
The Believe poster and the coaches’ push for more goals have done their job. Richmond are playing with confidence, climbing the standings and becoming a much stronger team, with Gemma emerging as one of their most important players.
During another dominant performance, the coaches begin taking starters off. Gemma is supposed to join them on the bench, but she wants the chance to complete a hat trick; Alice and the rest of the coaching staff agree to leave her in. The decision backfires when Gemma goes down with a knee injury.
No one can say immediately how serious the damage is. Rebecca tries to help by finding a doctor who can see Gemma quickly and sends her a gift basket, while Alice goes to see her in person.
The injury has given Gemma another reason to think about her future. She has an opportunity to work as a lawyer, and now she is considering taking it rather than returning to football. When she tells Alice that she might be done, Alice struggles to respond.
Getting through to Gemma requires something Alice doesn’t find easy: talking openly about how she feels. She eventually manages it, and Gemma decides she wants to work toward playing again.
She will also have someone familiar overseeing that recovery. Dr. Beaumont helps her get back onto the pitch.
Someone Is Secretly Richmond Shares
Higgins notices something strange happening behind the scenes at Richmond. Several shareholders have recently sold their stakes in the club.
Finding out why proves much harder. His calls get him nowhere, although he learns enough to realize that the sales aren’t simply a coincidence. Someone has been pressuring shareholders to sell, leaving Higgins with the more important question: who wants those shares.
His search eventually takes him to Mae at the pub. She isn’t willing to openly give him the answer, but she does point him in the right direction: follow the anger. For Higgins, one person fits: Rupert (personally, I don’t believe that; I still don’t like or trust Zelda).
Higgins believes Rebecca’s ex-husband is secretly trying to gain control of Richmond. There is no confrontation with Rupert in Episode 8, nor does Higgins uncover the full extent of what is happening. For now, he has identified who he believes is behind the sales, while Rebecca is facing a potential threat to the club without knowing exactly how far it has already gone.
Roy Struggles to Tell Keeley How He Feels
Roy already knows the truth about his feelings after Dr. Beaumont ended their relationship in Episode 7. Keeley, however, doesn’t know that the relationship is over. She believes she has realized too late that she still loves Roy.
That makes the prospect of accompanying him to a special ceremony at Chelsea particularly uncomfortable. Roy wants her there, but he still has the same problem he has had so many times before: knowing what he feels doesn’t make saying it any easier.
He asks Ted for advice. The answer helps Roy stop worrying about finding exactly the right moment and concentrate instead on what he actually wants to say.
Roy and Keeley head out together, although getting to Chelsea becomes its own ordeal. His new car causes trouble and leaves them stranded, forcing them onto the Tube. Roy is already uncomfortable in enclosed spaces, and the situation gets worse when the train stops. The delays mean they miss the ceremony.
They finally arrive as the event is ending, but Keeley doesn’t let Roy simply walk away from the moment. She encourages him to give the speech he came there to make anyway.
Roy begins by talking about his football career. Then Ted’s advice comes back to him, and the speech becomes something else entirely.
Roy and Keeley Get Back Together
Instead of continuing to talk about football, Roy tells Keeley that he loves her; this time, the feeling is mutual.
Keeley has spent the episode believing that she lost her chance with Roy because he was still with Dr. Beaumont. Roy has spent it trying to work out how to say what he already knows. Once he finally does, nothing is keeping them apart anymore. Roy and Keeley are officially back together.
It has taken them a long time to get here again, and their reunion comes after both have had the chance to understand what they actually want. Roy’s relationship with Dr. Beaumont forced him to acknowledge that he never stopped loving Keeley. Keeley reached the same realization about Roy while believing he was no longer available to her.
His missed Chelsea ceremony unexpectedly gives Roy the opportunity to say it.
Elsewhere, Richmond’s immediate future is suddenly much less comfortable. Gemma has decided to fight her way back from injury, but the extent of the damage to her knee remains unknown. Higgins also believes Rupert is making a secret move against Rebecca through the club’s shareholders.
