Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 9, “Mae Rides the Bus,” brings Richmond dangerously close to losing more than a few football matches. While the Greyhounds desperately need a win and Keeley discovers that her life with Roy is about to change, Zelda finally gives us a reason to stop wondering what she is really doing around Rebecca. And yes, I have been waiting for that last part.
Richmond Struggles Without Gemma
Six weeks pass after Gemma injures her knee, and Richmond does not have an easy time without her. The Greyhounds keep fighting for results, but too many matches end without the points they need, sending them down the standings at exactly the wrong time.
Gemma is back with the squad and getting closer to playing, although she has not yet been cleared. Her absence does give someone else an opportunity. Shannon has been improving on the pitch, and her progress is enough to get Alice’s attention while Richmond works on finding more ways to create chances.
Their next big test comes away against Bristol, and Ted decides to bring Mae along for the trip. She gets the full experience, bus ride included, and even speaks to the players in the locker room before the match.
Whatever extra encouragement Richmond gets from Mae, Bristol quickly puts them in trouble.
There is finally some good news when Gemma is cleared to play and enters the match before halftime. She soon gets the opportunity to make a difference after a bad foul gives Richmond a penalty. Gemma scores, cutting Bristol’s lead before the break, but it is obvious that returning to the pitch has not magically fixed her knee.
Rather than push herself too far, she decides not to play the second half. Richmond now needs somebody else to step up.
This time, Shannon is ready. The Greyhounds fight their way back into the match, first finding the equalizer and then taking a 3-2 lead. Bristol still has time to respond, so Richmond needs something more to put the game away. Shannon gets the opportunity on a breakaway and takes it, scoring the goal that finally secures the win.
After several difficult weeks, Richmond finally has something to celebrate.
Is Keeley Pregnant in Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 9?
The six-week jump has also given Roy and Keeley time to settle into their relationship again, and things are going surprisingly well between them. Then Keeley passes out during a Richmond game.
There is concern that high blood pressure could be responsible, especially considering how stressful watching Richmond can apparently be for her, but Keeley suspects something else. She takes a pregnancy test and gets the answer: Keeley is pregnant.
Rebecca is the first person she tells and could hardly be happier for her. Keeley has a harder time figuring out how she is going to tell Roy. They have only recently found their way back to each other, and she worries that throwing a baby into their new relationship might change everything.
Roy, unaware of the real reason behind what happened, is already taking Keeley’s health seriously. He keeps her home while Richmond travels to Bristol and does not even want her watching the match live. Instead, he recreates parts of the action himself so she can still follow what is happening without actually watching.
After Richmond wins, Keeley finally tells him.
She had nothing to worry about. Roy is thrilled when he finds out she is pregnant, which means that after everything these two have gone through, Roy and Keeley are now preparing to become parents.
Zelda Finally Shows Her True Colors
See? I told you I didn’t trust Zelda.
I have not liked or trusted her since she appeared this season, and even when she seemed to be helping Rebecca and Keeley, something about her continued to feel off. Episode 9 finally proves there was a very good reason for that suspicion.
Zelda is the person buying Richmond shares. Her helpful arrival in Rebecca’s life has been hiding a much bigger plan. During the Bristol match, she is closing in on enough shares to gain majority control of the club. She tells her associate to do whatever is necessary to secure the remaining shares she needs.
Rebecca could be about to lose control of Richmond. Zelda does not get to enjoy the moment just yet. Her extreme diet causes serious indigestion during the match, and she disappears into the bathroom after giving the order to secure the final shares.
Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 9 Ending Explained: What Happens to Mae?
There are two unresolved stories at the end of Episode 9.
On the ownership side, Zelda is revealed as the person buying Richmond shares. She is trying to secure enough of them to gain majority control of the club, although the episode does not confirm whether she succeeds. And yes, I told you I didn’t trust Zelda. Something about her has felt off from the beginning, and now we finally know why.
The more worrying cliffhanger involves Mae.
Something appears to be wrong with her, and by the end of the episode Rebecca receives concerning news that sends her looking for Ted. The episode cuts away before we learn exactly what has happened.
Given how the scene is presented, there is clearly reason to be worried about Mae, but we cannot immediately jump to the conclusion that she has died. The episode does not officially confirm her fate, so for now, all we can say is that something has happened to her and Rebecca’s reaction suggests it is serious.
That leaves the finale with two very different questions to answer: what has happened to Mae, and whether Zelda has managed to take control of Richmond.
