Netflix has set a December 17, 2026 release date for Unaccustomed Earth and released the first images from the new family drama starring Freida Pinto.
Inspired by Jhumpa Lahiri’s short story collection of the same name, Unaccustomed Earth follows a close Indian American community in Cambridge and Boston, with Pinto playing Parul Chaudhury, a wife and mother whose return to the United States changes far more than her own life.
What is Netflix’s Unaccustomed Earth about?
Parul once gave up her college first love to honor her father’s wishes. Years later, after receiving a life-changing cancer diagnosis, she moves her family from India back to Cambridge, Massachusetts, the place where she once felt most at home.
Knowing that her time may be limited, Parul decides to pursue the life she never allowed herself to have. The choices she makes begin affecting her family and the wider community around them.
Pinto described the question at the heart of Parul’s story in comments published by Netflix alongside the first look.
“How far would you go to live the dream that you really want to live? And are you up for the consequences?”
The series takes its inspiration from Lahiri’s Unaccustomed Earth, but showrunner, writer and executive producer Madhuri Shekar has brought characters from the collection’s different stories together for the adaptation.
Shekar said the idea began with an image of those characters sharing a Thanksgiving table.
“These connections started forming between them. This beautiful community just blossomed.”
That approach turns the separate stories into one connected drama built around the families and relationships within the community.
Freida Pinto leads the Unaccustomed Earth cast
Freida Pinto stars as Parul, with Siddarth playing Amit and Indraneil Sengupta as Jai.
The series regular cast also includes Parveen Kaur as Nina, Sarayu Blue as Ruma, Justin Bartha as Adam, Adi Roy as Kaushik, Iyla Sundarsingh Mckaig as Hema and Jayant Kripalani as Pranab.
Ishita Bansal, Meera Simham, Ravi Kapoor, Swayam Bhatia and Palomi Ghosh are among the additional key cast.

Unaccustomed Earth brings Jhumpa Lahiri’s stories together
Madhuri Shekar serves as showrunner and writer and is also an executive producer alongside John Wells, Jhumpa Lahiri, Nisha Ganatra, Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow and Celia Costas.
Ritesh Batra directs the first two episodes and also serves as an executive producer.
The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television.
Unaccustomed Earth is based on Lahiri’s short story collection of the same name. Rather than adapting the stories as separate installments, the Netflix series connects their characters within the same Indian American community, an approach Shekar described while discussing how she developed the adaptation.
Netflix has now released the first set of images from the series ahead of its December 17 premiere.
