As Lucky prepares to bring Priscilla and Whittaker within the FBI’s reach, she finally tells John exactly what growing up with him cost her. And just as the operation is about to begin, everything at the hotel goes violently wrong.
Lucky Season 1 Episode 6 Recap: Lucky Makes Rand an Offer
Lucky and John are taken to a boardroom, where John fills the waiting time with stories about his father, his first scam, and their shared history. Lucky was only seven when she made her first haul, which says plenty about how early she was brought into this life.
When Rand and Gates arrive, Lucky gets straight to business.
She refuses to hand over the seed phrases without a deal. Her terms are immunity from prosecution for herself and a commuted sentence for John. Rand refuses, even when Lucky offers Priscilla instead. What Rand really wants is bigger: Priscilla and Whittaker.
Rand’s boss isn’t thrilled with how she’s handling things either, particularly after learning that she released John from prison without his approval. Rand insists Lucky can get them both targets. He reluctantly lets her continue, making clear that she’ll be the one held responsible if it fails.
That gives Lucky the opening she needs. Rand accepts the deal, with one condition on Lucky’s side: she has to see Priscilla herself.
Lucky and John are moved to a hotel under FBI guard, and the privacy finally gives them a chance to talk about what happens if this works. John assumes his daughter has another plan for the money, but in reality she doesn’t.
Lucky is tired of running and wants to use it to buy their freedom. John would rather keep the money, which brings years of resentment to the surface.
Lucky Tells John What Her Childhood Was Really Like
John seems to believe he gave Lucky a good childhood. She remembers it very differently.
His greed and reckless choices denied her any real sense of normalcy. Instead, she grew up frightened and surrounded by a life she never had the chance to choose for herself.
Then comes another confession. Lucky admits that she helped the FBI build its case against Priscilla. That cooperation ultimately led to John’s arrest after Rand failed to honor their agreement.
John doesn’t take the news well. He calls Lucky foolish for trusting Rand and accuses her of taking everything away from him, despite what she has just told him about the effect his own choices had on her.
There isn’t time to resolve the argument. Lucky meets Rand to go over the plan for Priscilla, while John reviews the paperwork concerning his sentence. He’s hardly enthusiastic, but he signs.
Gates then takes Lucky to see Priscilla, leaving Rand and John together.
John tries to provoke her, but Rand has a fairly direct answer for his judgment. She admits her work may have come before her own child, but points out that she didn’t turn that child into something to be used for her benefit. For once, John is forced to confront his role in how Lucky’s life turned out.
Lucky Returns to Priscilla With an Ultimatum
Lucky goes to Priscilla’s house and asks Dutch to arrange a meeting. She finds Priscilla at the stables, where their conversation soon turns to John and Cary.
Priscilla believes Lucky can’t escape who she is or the life she’s lived. Lucky pushes the same argument back at her before getting to the real reason she’s there: Whittaker. She insists that she will only hand over the money to him personally. There will be no alternative arrangement.
Priscilla eventually agrees to speak with Whittaker, although she rejects the meeting location Lucky has been given by Rand. When Lucky returns to FBI headquarters, she tells Rand they will have to meet somewhere chosen by Whittaker instead.
Before that happens, Lucky gets another chance to talk to her father.
This time, John isn’t defensive. He talks about raising her alone after her mother’s death and admits that he should never have brought her up around crime. It has taken him years to understand what that did to her, and he finally apologizes.
More importantly, John tells Lucky he’s proud of the ways she turned out differently from him. She hugs him, finally giving father and daughter a moment of reconciliation after their earlier confrontation. Then the call comes. They have a location for the meeting.
The FBI Prepares Lucky to Meet Whittaker
Whittaker hasn’t made the operation easy. Rand and Gates examine the location by satellite and realize how complicated it will be to control.
An agent hides a microphone inside Lucky’s jacket while Rand goes through the plan. John offers one final warning about Whittaker and the influence he has over Priscilla. This time, Rand listens.
With Lucky heading into the operation, John remains behind with Gates at the hotel. The two pass the time playing cards, and Gates appears to be warming to him. At one point, he hears something outside.
Gates tries contacting another agent but gets no response. He draws his weapon and steps into an empty hallway, where an armed man opens fire. Gates manages to shoot him, but he’s hit twice himself. Another man then approaches and shoots Gates in the head.
The attack isn’t over; gunfire hits the handle of John’s hotel-room door before the door is kicked down.
Lucky Season 1 Episode 6 Ending Explained: What Happens to Gates and John?
