Lucky Season 1 Episode 5 Recap: Lucky Finds Cary’s Money and Reunites With John

Lucky is alive after the chase, but Cary is not. Episode 5 follows her through the immediate aftermath of his death before a discovery hidden inside a teddy bear finally gives her access to the money they had been searching for.

But getting the money does not send Lucky running. By the end of Lucky Season 1 Episode 5, John is unexpectedly out of prison, father and daughter are back together, and Lucky decides they should surrender to Rand as part of a plan that has yet to be revealed.

Lucky Season 1 Episode 5 Recap: Lucky Escapes the Hospital

The episode begins with Lucky walking beneath an underpass, covered in blood and carrying a teddy bear in her backpack. She comes across the aftermath of the accident she and Cary caused and spots a possible way out when emergency services arrive.

Lucky claims that an injured woman being taken to the hospital is her grandmother. The story works well enough for a paramedic to let her ride along, allowing Lucky to get away from the police at the scene.

Her escape becomes more complicated once she reaches the hospital. While a nurse questions her about her supposed grandmother, Lucky sees Rand being brought in for treatment. The shock of everything that has happened catches up with her, and she collapses.

When Lucky wakes, she realizes that she is still being identified as Amanda Turner. Rather than risk staying any longer, she removes her IV and prepares to leave.

In the bathroom, Lucky washes Cary’s blood from her hands and encounters a crying girl. She doesn’t know the girl is Rand’s daughter, but Lucky tries to comfort her and relates the girl’s fear to her own complicated relationship with her father.

Lucky then manages to leave the hospital without being stopped by the police stationed outside.

Cary’s Death Leaves Lucky and Priscilla Grieving

Lucky makes her way to a hotel and gets a room despite her battered appearance. She finally has somewhere private to recover, but being alone also leaves her with everything that happened to Cary.

At the hospital, Rand receives confirmation that Cary died and that Lucky has disappeared. Her boss comes to see her, but Rand is more frustrated by the fact that he is at her bedside instead of searching for Lucky.

Priscilla is dealing with Cary’s death in her own way. She tells Dutch that she wants Cary cremated and discusses his memorial. She also wants Wayne informed that Cary has died, although the reason for that request isn’t immediately explained.

Meanwhile, Lucky begins remembering her childhood with John. Even then, she questioned the life they were living and whether what they did made them bad people.

Cary’s death brings that old question back to the surface.

Lucky takes Cary’s jacket from her backpack and holds onto it before eventually putting it on. She goes downstairs to the hotel bar, where a stranger sitting beside her starts talking about his own difficult day.

He worries about failing his daughter. Lucky reassures him, then starts revealing pieces of what happened to her. Some details remain lies, including her explanation for why she has someone else’s belongings, but she admits that the clothes she is wearing belonged to her husband and that he died that day.

It is one of the few moments when Lucky allows herself to say part of the truth out loud.

Priscilla Says Goodbye to Cary

Priscilla’s grief also turns into guilt.

Dutch wakes to the sound of gunshots and finds her outside firing at Cary’s trophies. Priscilla wonders whether her own decisions helped put Cary on the path that ultimately led to his death. Dutch stays with her and eventually gets her to stop shooting.

Rand, meanwhile, refuses to remain sidelined. Once she is discharged from the hospital, she returns to the investigation even though the FBI has lost its strongest leads.

Lucky also gets moving again. She changes her appearance, leaves the hotel and steals a car from the valet.

Priscilla holds Cary’s memorial at her home, surrounded by guests with whom she does not appear particularly close. Eventually, she takes Cary’s urn and leaves the gathering.

She goes to the beach alone to scatter his ashes. Then Lucky arrives.

Lucky Discovers Where Cary Hid the Money

The reunion between Lucky and Priscilla quickly becomes another confrontation.

Lucky explains that she doesn’t know where the money is because Cary was the only person who knew its location. Their argument soon moves beyond the missing cash and back to John and the history between the two families.

Priscilla still holds John responsible for stealing from her. As far as she is concerned, Lucky has nothing to offer her without the money, and she leaves Lucky with a threat before walking away.

Back inside the car, Lucky turns her anger on the blood-covered teddy bear she has been carrying.

That’s when Cary’s final secret reveals itself.

The bear begins playing seed phrases recorded in Cary’s voice. Lucky realizes what they are for, takes out Cary’s laptop and enters the phrases. They give her access to almost $10 million.

After everything that has happened, Lucky finally has the money, and she breaks down in relief.

Rand Finds a New Way to Track Lucky

While Lucky now has access to Cary’s money, Rand unexpectedly finds another lead through her own family.

Back home, Rand continues reviewing the case on her laptop. Her daughter Dana sees what she is looking at and recognizes Lucky.

That is enough for Rand to make another move. She calls Gates and tells him that she needs him to use a connection at the Department of Justice.

Elsewhere, the reason Priscilla wanted Wayne to know about Cary’s death finally becomes clear.

Priscilla takes Cary’s urn to Wayne’s home and reveals that Wayne was Cary’s biological father.

She throws the urn at his bookshelf and confronts him over Cary’s death, but Wayne remains focused on the missing money. The encounter turns violent when he pushes Priscilla down and holds a gun to her forehead while demanding to know where the money is.

Priscilla is now in immediate danger, while Lucky has exactly what Wayne wants.

Lucky Season 1 Episode 5 Ending Explained: Why Does Lucky Surrender to Rand?

The final part of Episode 5 brings John back into Lucky’s story.

John is unexpectedly released from prison. When he leaves the facility and gets into a cab, he notices a black car driving away.

Lucky is on a tarmac when John calls her with the news. She immediately suspects Rand arranged his release as a way of forcing Lucky into the open.

Instead of avoiding the possible trap, Lucky tells John to meet her at a place familiar to both of them.

Father and daughter soon reunite on a rooftop.

This is where Lucky makes the episode’s final decision: she wants both of them to surrender to Rand.

The episode does not reveal the full plan behind that decision. Lucky has just gained access to nearly $10 million, Rand has found another way to pursue her, and John has suddenly been released from prison under circumstances Lucky already distrusts.

What is confirmed is that Lucky isn’t simply planning to keep running with the money. She deliberately chooses to reunite with John and proposes turning themselves in.

Exactly what Lucky intends to accomplish by doing so remains unanswered when Episode 5 ends.
