Virgin River Season 8 begins production on April 22 and runs through August 10. Cameras are rolling, several familiar faces won’t be back, and the show is jumping four months forward in the story. Here’s everything confirmed so far about Virgin River Season 8 filming and what it means for the show.
When and Who is filming Season 8?
Production kicks off April 22 and wraps August 10. Directing duties for the first block are split between returning veterans Audrey Cummings and Shannon Kohli, with Martin Henderson also listed as a director, most likely for a single episode, as he directed episode 6×08 in a previous season.
Because Cummings and Kohli are both seasoned directors, the production is expected to cross-board, meaning scenes from different episodes get filmed together at the same location on the same day. It keeps the schedule efficient and is standard practice for shows with established directors who know the material.
Casting notices also reveal the production is searching for :
- three- to nine-month-old Asian or mixed babies or twins
- two- to six-month-old Caucasian babies or twins
- newborns between 15 days and three months old.
The time jump means we won’t see the immediate aftermath of the surgery, but most likely only some flashbacks.

Where things stood at the end of Season 7
The Season 7 finale pushed many pieces into difficult positions. Marley decided to go through with the adoption, but it was revealed that the baby suffers from a congenital heart defect. Mel and Jack’s baby is born in Los Angeles and rushed into surgery, with Eli, Mel’s former love interest from her early nursing days, serving as the pediatric surgeon.
Back in Virgin River, Brady crashed his motorcycle on his way to see Brie, leaving his fate completely open.
Doc and Hope’s relationship fractured after a clash over the clinic’s future, and Hope came to terms with the truth about her father, getting closer to her ex-husband Roland, who still has feelings for her. Mike and Veronica grew closer. The preacher’s future with the bar was set to change. A lot of threads were left in the air.

Who is not coming back for Season 8
The departures are significant. Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith confirmed that Marco Grazzini will not return as Mike; there is simply nothing written for the character he reported back in March. His love interest, Veronica, played by Sara Canning, is also not set to return.
Lauren Hammersley has also exited the series. Charmaine is not coming back. Marley, played by Rachel Drance, also departed at the end of Season 7 as part of the story, wrapping her arc with the adoption.
Cutting that many recurring characters at once seems a budget move, which connects directly to the larger question of where this show is headed; more on that below.

Who is joining or returning
Austin Nichols will be back as Dr. Eli in a recurring capacity. His role will reportedly be larger in Season 8, bringing what Smith described as “new energy” to the show. Smith was specific that this will not become a love triangle, but a more prominent ex-love interest in Mel and Jack’s orbit is bound to create friction regardless.
Cody Kearsley returns as Clay, though it’s not yet confirmed whether in a regular or recurring role. His storyline involves searching for his sister, from whom he was separated when they were kids.

The four-month time jump and what Season 8 is about
Smith has said Season 8 will focus on “the challenges that raising a child with special physical needs puts on Mel and Jack’s marriage and how challenging it is to be new parents, much less new parents in such a high-stakes situation.”
The time jump skips past the surgery and the immediate fallout of Brady’s accident, so we’ll be picking up with characters already some months into their new situations rather than in the thick of crisis.
One open question is whether Mel and Jack will spend large portions of the season separated from the rest of the ensemble again, as was the case in Season 7.
Martin Henderson and the Season 7 promotion gap
Henderson had a significant reduction in press compared to the previous season’s, which was hard to miss. While co-lead Alexandra Breckenridge and other cast members did interviews, social media appearances, and the usual promotional rounds around the premiere, Henderson did almost none of it, limiting himself to a couple of written interviews for online outlets, published two to three weeks after the season launched. Even for someone who doesn’t have a particularly active social media presence, the silence was on a different level. It caught the attention of fans across platforms, and no clear explanation has been offered publicly.
Is Season 8 the last season?
There’s no official word. Season 7 held its ground in viewership; there’s been a gradual, steady decline since Season 5, but nothing that signals imminent cancellation. However, both Breckenridge and likely Henderson have contracts running through Season 8, while other cast members appear to be contracted through a potential Season 9. That’s a meaningful divide. Renegotiating with your two leads is expensive, and if the show’s numbers have softened, there’s a real question of whether Netflix would rather end it cleanly on their own terms.
It’s possible the decision has already been made internally and hasn’t been announced.
If Season 8 is the end, the hope from a viewer’s perspective and a fan of the show would be that the announcement comes early enough for the loyal fans who travel to the filming locations every season to plan one final trip; they’ve earned that much notice.

How can it be losing viewers its being top of the viewing rating in quite a lot of country’s.I hope this isn’t the last season its one of the best shows on tv.I am disappointed that it’s jumping 4 months from the end of season 7.I love the show and keep rewatching it ,Mel and Jack are the best romantic couple on tv .
While maintaining a spot in the Top 10 is impressive, it doesn’t guarantee consistent viewership numbers from year to year. For Season 7, the figures are slightly lower than those of Season 6, continuing a steady decline that began after the show’s peak in Season 4. This decrease in viewers is common for long-running series and isn’t a major concern just yet. However, the series is approaching its final act; it remains to be seen whether that will occur in Season 8 or Season 9.
I don’t want it to end I love the Series so much, I watch it all the time, it’s such a good show. I am a bit disappointed that there jumping 4,months, Series 8 though, I prefered that Season 7 started where 6 finished. Please carry it on for more Seasons Netflix, there is more to tell in this story.
I’m sorry, but I completely disagree. The show has declined significantly since season 5, and no longer resembles what I originally signed up for. The writing, the performance of some cast members, and the chemistry among them are all off. It would be better to end the show while it is still somewhat tolerable than to wait until it has completely ruined itself. People can always revisit the first eight seasons instead.
I’m one of the fans still wondering why Martin never showed up for season 7. I hope there will be an announcement soon. If this is the last season, I plan to go to Vancouver to meet the cast before August 10, much like other fans I’ve spoken to will be doing.
