The Story Behind Thrash

Thrash begins with a natural disaster.

A Category 5 hurricane strikes a coastal town, leaving widespread destruction in its wake. Storm surges flood streets and buildings, turning the area into a chaotic landscape shaped by the storm’s aftermath.

The disaster introduces an additional danger.

The surge waters bring sharks into the flooded town, creating a survival scenario for those caught in the destruction.

Residents must navigate the devastation left by the hurricane while confronting predators moving through the water-filled streets.

Director Tommy Wirkola on the Film’s Concept

Director Tommy Wirkola has spoken about the origins of the project and his interest in shark films.

“I became obsessed with sharks after Jaws, and Jaws 2, which is an underrated movie,” Wirkola said. “I spent a lot of my childhood obsessing over sharks and whatever movie was made about that subject.”

Wirkola connected that early fascination with contemporary environmental concerns.

“Fast forward to a world going off its rails when it comes to global warming and flash floods happening everywhere, and it dawned on me that this could be a great setting-off point for a movie, combining the idea of a disaster-movie with a shark-thriller.”

Adam McKay on the Film’s Scientific Context

Producer Adam McKay also addressed the environmental context behind the story’s premise.

“More and more, you’re hearing marine biologists acknowledge that climate is changing where these sharks go. It’s changing how they behave,” McKay said.

He noted that the film’s concept draws on real discussions within marine science.

“So, in as much as this is an edge-of-your-seat popcorn film, the science behind it is not implausible.”
