Before, I comment, let me say that Tyler Perry is a brilliant film maker. I would further describe him as a Berry Gordy or Quincy Jones of the film industry. I’ve enjoyed many, many of his films from the video rentals to the big movie theatres, and onto the streaming channels. So, when I first glanced at the film “Joe’s College Road Trip” in my Netflix selection, it was a no-brainer of film to view. I even thought maybe it could be the beginning of a branch-off from the chronicles of Madea. My expectations of this film I felt would rival my enjoyment of Tyler’s past movies. But with this film, I only watched about half of this movie and turned it off. While in one way I chuckled up some laughs, most parts of the movie were very bothersome to me. Not because of the shocking adult content of the film, but because of who it’s based on. Yes, I’m talking about Ol’ Joe himself. Joe has been built as a mainstream character in the Madea franchise as a wise cracking, grumpy, and argumentative old man; a character many of us have come to love and enjoy. But darkening this much-admired character with profanity, vulgar conversations and raw sexual scenery was absolutely the wrong direction for this film based on this particular character. And that disclosure in the beginning could’ve been a bit more seriously stated and not played like some old stylized 1970s film clip. I feel that I’m likely not alone with these concerning thoughts. It’s a bit risky to ask your grand audience to bend and follow this beloved character into a NC-17 environment and expect the same enjoyment as in previous films. I think that this movie missed the mark and could’ve been an opportunity to expand the Ol’ Joe character into a spinoff series stemming from the brilliance of the Madea Legacy (such as Creed is to the Rocky series). My advice would be to let this film have its run, then shelve it never allowing it to be released again. Then I would proceed to reintroduce the Ol’ Joe character back to his defaulted PG version by recreating another film that is more mainstream and enjoyable for ALL audiences.
