Hopper and Eleven Reach a Dead End
The episode opens in the Upside Down, where Hopper and Eleven try to break through the massive wall blocking their path. Nothing works. While they regroup, sharing beef jerky for energy, they spot headlights in the distance. Military vehicles close in fast.
Suddenly, a sonic device mounted on one of the trucks activates. The machine cripples Eleven immediately, sending her to the ground and leaving her powerless. Hopper pulls her behind a billboard as the soldiers search the area. When they use the device again, Eleven cries out from the pain, revealing their location. Hopper fires back, taking out several soldiers with gunfire and grenades before disabling the machine. Once the machine stops, Eleven regains control and finishes the remaining soldiers with her powers.

Will Pushes Back Against Joyce
In the Rightside Up, Joyce finds Robin and Will after discovering they ran off without telling her. She confronts Robin for taking Will, but Will insists he made the call himself. He explains his vision worked, he saw Vecna, and Holly was only the beginning. Vecna intends to take more children.
Will reveals Derek Turnbow, one of Holly’s classmates, is next. Derek has also been seeing Mr. Whatsit. Will argues they can use what they now know to protect Derek, even if it means taking risks. They still don’t know what Vecna plans to do with the kids, but Will refuses to stand by.
Holly’s Life at Creel House
Inside Creel House, Holly eats breakfast with Henry, Vecna in his human form. He tells her that her parents will join them once they’re healed and mentions Derek will be arriving soon. Holly isn’t thrilled about it, but Henry reassures her he’ll protect her. If Derek hurts her, he’ll send him back “to face the monsters alone.”
Henry walks Holly outside and tells her he’ll be gone for the day. She can explore the house, but she must never go into the woods. Before leaving, he asks her to collect the mail. Holly opens the mailbox to find a Tiffany cassette and a boombox. She races back inside, but as she heads inot the house, she senses something watching her from the woods.

The Group Regathers and Learns Derek Is Next
Steve, Jonathan, Dustin, Nancy, Lucas, Joyce, Robin, and Will regroup at the Squawk station. Will explains he can now see through Vecna, from inside Derek’s mind. Nancy tells the group Mr. Whatsit wasn’t a harmless invention. Henry appeared to Holly as a friend to gain her trust, another shift in his strategy.
They form a plan:
- Kidnap Derek and his family for their protection
- Use blindfolds so Vecna can’t see through Derek
- Set a trap at the Turnbow house
- Shoot the approaching Demogorgon with a tracker
- Follow the signal into the Upside Down to reach Holly, Hopper, and Eleven
The plan relies on tricking Vecna into thinking Derek is asleep. When the Demogorgon arrives, they’ll hit it with the transmitter, and the creature will lead them to Vecna’s location.
To get Derek’s family to cooperate, they need someone the Turnbows trust, someone who can drug them long enough to keep them safe. Erica fits the bill, thanks to her past friendship with Derek’s sister, Tina. After some pushing, Erica agrees.

Holly Receives a Mysterious Letter
Holly explores Creel House, dancing to “I Think We’re Alone Now,” trying on dresses, cooking, and finding an old photo of a young Henry. When the doorbell rings, she sees no one outside. However, the mailbox flag is up.
Inside, she finds a note reading:
“I need your help. Meet me at the X. Henry”
The envelope contains a map and a compass. She hesitates, remembering Henry’s warning, but begins to consider leaving.

Hopper and Eleven Interrogate Sergeant Akers
Hopper and Eleven steal a Humvee and camouflage it. They take Sergeant Akers captive, hoping for information. Hopper wants to know when the next convoy is leaving so they can get back to the Rightside Up. Eleven wants answers about the wall.
They compromise: Hopper asks about the convoy; Eleven searches his mind.
At the hospital, Robin and Will search a medicine cabinet for the drugs they need when Robin suddenly spots Vickie nearby and hides. While they wait, Will asks her how she first knew Vickie liked her. Been unsure about recognizing those feelings himself, he is curious how she figured it out. Robin explains that it wasn’t one big moment but a series of small things, a brush of the knee, an elbow bump, the way Vickie looked at her, little signals that eventually made the truth clear.

Preparing the Trap
Murray arrives with supplies for the trap. Steve modifies the Squawk van to make it lighter and faster. Dustin pitches a new idea: convert Steve’s BMW into a dedicated tracking vehicle.
Nancy tests the shotgun shell designed to fire the tracking transmitter. Meanwhile, an awkward exchange between Murray and Jonathan reveals that Jonathan plans to propose to Nancy, the engagement ring was hidden inside a cassette Murray gave him earlier in the season.

Akers Reveals What He Knows
Hopper questions Akers about Dr. Kay and the wall. Akers refuses to talk. Hopper warns him that Eleven is inside his mind. As Eleven pushes deeper, she sees Kay entering a secure room inside the Upside Down lab, sealed behind a large metal vault door.
Akers panics. Hopper demands to know what’s inside. Akers swears he doesn’t know. Eleven tears at the door in the memory until Akers faints. She tells Hopper she’s certain someone powerful is being kept there, someone like her. She believes Dr. Kay is hiding Vecna.

Holly Leaves Creel House
Holly debates whether to follow the map. She looks at the Dungeons & Dragons figurine Mike gave her and takes it as a sign. She gathers supplies and heads into the woods.

Erica Executes the Plan
Erica arrives at the Turnbow home with a pie and uses it to slip drugs into dinner. The entire family passes out, except Tina, who refused dessert. Erica gives Tina a direct injection. With the Turnbows blindfolded and secured, Joyce, Robin, Erica, and Will load them into the Squawk van and head to a safe location
Joyce and Will take a moment to apologize to each other, Joyce for not realizing Will was missing the night he vanished years ago, Will for acting on instinct before looping her in. They agree they need to trust each other as things escalate.
Back in Hawkins, the rest of the team prepares the Turnbow house as a trap for the Demogorgon, setting up positions and equipment for the moment Vecna sends the creature through.

The Demogorgon Arrives
Steve and Dustin monitor from the car as the neighborhood lights flicker toward the house. Nancy, Jonathan, Mike, and Lucas wait inside. A portal opens in Derek’s bedroom ceiling. The Demogorgon enters, heading toward the bed.
The group acts quickly. Nancy fires the transmitter-loaded shell, hitting the creature before it flees through the portal.
Nancy, Jonathan, Steve, and Dustin chase the signal in the car. It cuts out, then returns. Dustin realizes the creature has turned around.

Vecna Strikes Back
Back at the barn, Derek wakes as Will senses a shift. Vecna now knows their location. The Demogorgon’s sudden change in direction is confirmation: it’s coming straight for them.

Holly’s Escape Leads to a Surprise
Holly’s path leads to a rock wall. She finds a narrow opening and calls for Henry, but another figure emerges. She runs into the woods and hides behind rocks as footsteps approach.
Boots stop in front of her. A figure leans down. Holly looks up:
It’s Max.
She simply says, “Hi.”
The episode ends.
