Derek Panics as the Plan Begins

The episode opens in the barn where Derek Turnbow is still terrified and refusing to listen. Joyce tries to calm him and explains they’re trying to protect him from the creature that came for him. Derek insists they’re lying and says Mr. Whatsit told him all about Will. When Joyce unties him, he shoves her aside and bolts past Robin and Erica.

Will tackles him, but Derek throws dirt in his face and escapes to the loft, pulling the ladder up behind him. As the group tries to reason with him, Will suddenly freezes, he feels Vecna through the hive mind. A creature is sprinting toward the barn.

Joyce grabs an axe as the Demogorgon bursts inside. She swings until it backs out long enough for Steve, Dustin, Nancy, and Jonathan to arrive, crashing into it with Steve’s car. The Demogorgon opens a rift and dives through. Steve decides to drive straight into the portal before it closes. The car disappears into the Upside Down, where they regain the signal and follow the creature’s path.

Moments later, Will sees a new vision, Holly and three other children suspended in Vecna’s web, tendrils hooked to their mouths. He snaps out of it shaking.

The Military Rounds Up Hawkins Kids

Back in Hawkins, the military begins collecting children around town. Dr. Kay orders them taken to the MAC-Z base for “protection,” not knowing she’s sending them straight into danger. Mike and Lucas see the soldiers taking kids and rush to warn the others.

Steve’s Group Hits a Dead End

In the Upside Down, Steve drives toward the cemetery following the tracker. Dustin suddenly loses the signal. Ahead, Nancy and Jonathan see something in the fog and shout for Steve to stop. The car crashes into a wall of the Upside Down, another barrier.

Will Paints His Vision

At the barn, Will begins painting the scene he saw earlier. He can’t fully explain it, but he knows it meant something to Vecna, and that he wasn’t supposed to witness it. Holly was connected to a spire, like she had become part of it. He saw three other children attached the same way, and twelve total spires. Vecna appears to be collecting more kids, eight more, to complete whatever he’s building.

Max and Holly Reach the Cave

Inside the forest, Max tends to Holly’s scraped knee and leads her to the cave where she has been hiding. Max admits she wrote the note because she needed Holly to come there. Holly hesitates, unsure if Max can be trusted, so Max softens her with a story about Mike’s failed attempt at an orange mohawk.

They push through the wall of the cave and step into a memory landscape, one built from Henry’s past. Max explains that this entire world is made of memories stitched together. Beautiful in places, but still a prison of Henry’s making.

Mike’s Plan: Derek Goes Undercover

In the Rightside Up, the group plans how to reach the kids Vecna is targeting. Mike suggests Derek could go undercover at the base and identify who else has seen Mr. Whatsit. Once identified, those kids can be guided to the tunnels and evacuated before Vecna reaches them.

Hopper and Eleven Scout the Tower

In the Upside Down, Hopper and Eleven scout the military tower and watch the entrance. Hopper doubts Vecna is inside the facility, questioning how he could reach Holly without powers. Eleven wants to push ahead, but Hopper reminds her this isn’t training.

Their radio flares to life, Dustin is calling from Steve’s group. Their car is stuck in the wall of the Upside Down, and they need Eleven to free it. Hopper explains they hit the wall too, near the other side of town. He says Holly is somewhere behind it and tells them they’re working on a plan. Nancy asks what kind of plan, but Hopper cuts her off and tells them all to stay put.

Max Reveals the Truth About Her Death

Inside the cave, Max finally tells Holly everything she has kept buried since the battle with Vecna. She begins with the moment she died. When Vecna took her in Season 4, he didn’t just injure her, he opened the fourth and final gate. That split Hawkins in two and locked Max inside a world made of Henry’s memories.

Max explains she should not be alive. For a short time, she wasn’t. She remembers nothing of her body being revived. What she remembers instead is opening her eyes in the Rainbow Room, surrounded by the still bodies of the other children who once lived there. It felt like waking up inside someone else’s nightmare.

She ran to the hallway and started walking toward the exit, when she pushed through the doors at the end of the hall, she didn’t find freedom, she found Hawkins High, but not as she knew it. It looked exactly like it did in 1959. That’s when she understood she wasn’t actually in Hawkins at all. She was walking through Henry Creel’s memories.

From that moment on, Max kept moving from one memory to another. She tells Holly it was like being stuck in a maze she got lost and ended up at the beginning.

Then it happened, the one thing that cut through the noise: she heard music.

“Running Up That Hill,” drifting from somewhere she couldn’t see. Max explains that music can break through Henry’s world because it comes from the real one. Lucas had never stopped playing it for her. He was out there, still reaching for her, and the sound traveled through the cracks in the memories.

She followed the song, and it led her through a series of her own experiences, memories she didn’t expect to see again. She watched scenes from her childhood, moments with Billy, and the final days before Vecna took her. She realized she wasn’t just moving through Henry’s life anymore; Henry was forcing her to relive her own pain.

The song pulled her forward until she reached the moment she died. She climbed the stairs in the Creel House memory and saw a portal just overhead. On the other side of it was her hospital room. She could see Lucas sitting beside her, holding her hand, begging her to stay with him. Max says she could feel the warmth of his hand through the portal, that’s how close she was.

She ran toward it. She could almost step through.

Then the music stopped and the portal snapped closed.

And when she turned around, Henry was standing right behind her.

Max fled. She kept runing until she reached the cave, the same cave she currently hides in. To her surprise, Henry didn’t follow. Something about this place frightened him. He would approach the entrance but never cross it. That’s when Max realized this cave wasn’t just a landmark in Henry’s mind, it was a memory he feared. A blind spot. A weakness.

With nowhere else to go and no music to guide her, Max stayed in the cave. It became her only safe spot, her home inside Henry’s world.

That is how she survived.

And she tells Holly that for a long time she believed she had only two choices:
accept what happened or give up entirely.

But now Holly is here, and that means something different. For the first time, Max sees a third option again: escape.

Max’s Plan

Max tells Holly there are three doors for prisoners like her:

  1. Give up
  2. Accept your fate
  3. Escape

She admits she chose Door 2, until Holly showed up. Now Door 3 is possible again. But Henry must not know Holly has fled. Holly needs to return to Creel House and follow Max’s instructions carefully.

Holly agrees.

Dustin Identifies the Pattern

While the others argue about whether to wait for Hopper or move on their own, Dustin adjusts the radio and hears a faint signal cutting through the static. He grabs a map from the wall and starts marking distances as we cut back to Nancy, frustrated that Hopper won’t tell them what he’s planning. Steve suggests they should stop waiting and make their own call, which immediately sets Jonathan off. He reminds Steve that his decisions already got them trapped once. Nancy steps in, pointing out it was her call, Vecna took her sister, and they can’t afford to sit still.

Dustin rushes in with his sketch. He explains that the interference they kept hearing earlier in the season wasn’t random at all. It was coming from the wall, a wall that forms a complete circle around the Upside Down. He measured the signal spread, and the distances line up. Dustin tells them the important part isn’t the circle itself but what sits at the center of it: the Department of Energy, Hawkins Lab. In other words, the heart of the Upside Down’s creation.

Will and Mike Talk

As the group moves towards the tunnels, Mike walks beside Will and asks what it was like to see through the Demogorgon’s eyes. Will explains he could feel the creature’s anger, but he also felt himself trapped inside it, unable to stop anything, like watching a scary movie he couldn’t turn off. Mike quietly asks if Will is sure he wasn’t the one “changing the channel,” hinting he might have more influence over the hive mind than he realizes. Will is caught off guard by the idea and doesn’t know how to respond. Robin, walking behind them, notices Will’s reaction and can tell the young man has some feeling for Mike.

Will and Robin’s Conversation

Deep in the tunnels, Will and Robin have a quiet conversation that connects to the episode’s final moments. Robin asks if he remembers Tammy Thompson. She explains how Tammy was the first person she thought might love her fully, and how losing that hope shattered the fantasy she’d built. Only later did she realize she had been looking for answers outside herself. She had to stop being afraid of who she was.

Will listens closely.

Lucas calls down to hurry. They regroup with the others as they prepare to dig upward.

Hopper and Eleven Enter the Lab

Hopper and Eleven sneak into the lab and grab a scientist’s keycard. It doesn’t grant access to the locked vault door. They switch to plan B, Eleven tries to use her powers.

Before she can, the alarm blares. A sonic weapon activates, crippling her. Hopper pulls her behind a desk.

Dr. Kay enters. She says she has been looking for Eleven for a long time and knows who Eleven is trying to reach. Eleven warns Dr. Kay her men are about to die.

Akers, who in the meanitme got himself free, and his soldiers mistake a storage closet for Hopper’s hiding spot and open fire, killing the scientist instead. Hopper attacks from behind, managing to take down several men before his gun jams. Akers gets the upper hand.

A tentacled creature from the Upside Down bursts in and coils around Hopper’s neck as Dr. Kay steps into the room.

Dr. Kay calls Hopper a thorn in her side and questions why he keeps risking himself for Eleven. Things look hopeless, until Eleven chucks a distraction at Kay, giving Hopper enough time to break free and knock her out.

Hopper picks up Eleven and tells her she has to leave. He gives her a compass and says to head for the woods, away from the sonic weapons, and go meet Nancy at the cemetery.

Eleven notices explosives strapped to his chest. Hopper says it’s a failsafe. He refuses to risk losing her again. He tells her he’s proud of her and says, “I love you, Jane,” before closing the door behind her.

Hopper Walks Toward Death

As Hopper walks toward the vault, we see flashes of his daughter Sarah, and the weight of what he’s about to do settles over him. He tightens his grip on the detonator. He opens the vault door.

The sonic devices suddenly fail. When the vault unlocks, Hopper walks out and guides Eleven inside.

Instead of Vecna, Eight is there, alive, unconscious, and hooked into the machinery. How she ended up here is a mystery, left for Volume 2.

Digging to the Kids

Mike and Lucas realize they’re digging in the wrong place when they hit a pipe under the bathroom sink. They move to the correct spot and dig through the floor.

Derek begins quietly gathering the kids he identified earlier, those who know Mr. Whatsit, and sends them toward the bathrooms for extraction.

Ashley, a girl who hasn’t seen Mr. Whatsit, walks into the bathroom and finds Mike and Will trying to keep the burst pipe under control. She immediately alerts the guards, and Derek pushes the remaining kids into the room before they’re discovered.

The military breaks the door down and arrests Will, Derek, Mike, and Joyce. The others manage to send five kids through the tunnels. Three reach Murray’s truck; two run through the tunnels with Lucas.

The Demogorgons Arrive

Will collapses, sensing something racing toward the base. The ground shakes, lights flicker. A Demogorgon bursts through and kills a guard. Another emerges. Portals open across Hawkins.

Demogorgons go after Robin, Lucas, and Murray as they try to protect the evacuated children.

Vecna Emerges

Mike sees a figure walking toward a portal. When it opens, Vecna steps through, stronger than ever. Soldiers fire at him but are thrown aside. Vecna strengthens the Demogorgons with a flick of his hand.

Vecna’s Plan Revealed, and Will’s Power Breaks Through

Joyce shouts for Vecna to leave Will alone, but Vecna barely looks at her. With a flick of his hand, he sends her flying across the street. Will is yanked forward, suspended in front of him, unable to fight the pull. Vecna finally explains why he has targeted those 12 children. In his view, they are the easiest to mold, fragile in their bodies, unsteady in their minds, and capable of being reshaped into whatever form he chooses. As he speaks, the camera cuts to to the Demogorgons dragging the screaming children through fresh portals.

Vecna says the kids are “perfect vessels,” because they don’t resist the way adults do. He tells Will that he was the first and that Will “broke quicker than expected.” By taking Will years earlier, Vecna learned what was possible, what he could build, and how far he could reach. Some minds, Vecna says, don’t belong in the world they were born into. They belong in his.

After delivering that message, Vecna releases his hold on Will and slips back into the Upside Down through the portal behind him.

Demogorgons Close In

Three Demogorgons immediately move into position: one charges at Robin, another races straight toward Lucas in the tunnels, and a third bursts from the ground near Mike. All three attack at once.

Will Remembers Robin’s Words

Robin’s voice drifts back from their conversation in the tunnels: stop being afraid of who you are, the answers are already there if you stop running from them. As her voice echoes, the scene shifts to flashes of Will’s life.

A clip of young Will on the swings.
Will meeting Mike for the first time.
Will building Castle Byers with Jonathan.
Will running through the woods dressed as a wizard, laughing.
Memory after memory, all layered over Robin’s quiet reminder that freedom comes when you stop being terrified of yourself.

Will’s Power Awakens

The Demogorgon attacking Mike suddenly freezes mid-air, limbs locked in place as if an invisible force has gripped it. Its body twists sharply. Bones crack in the same horrifying contortions Vecna once used. A second Demogorgon, the one closing in on Lucas, jerks backward and rises off the ground. The third, moments away from striking Robin, is pulled upward and held suspended.

The camera finally cuts back to Will.

His eyes have rolled completely white. His hand is raised the same way Vecna lifts his victims. All three Demogorgons twist violently under his control.

Will’s power snaps through like an electrical surge. One by one, the Demogorgons collapse, their bodies broken in midair before dropping lifeless to the ground.

Will falls to his knees. His eyes return to normal. A thin line of blood runs from his nose, the same sign Eleven and Henry showed after using their abilities. He wipes it away with the back of his hand.

The episode cuts to black.
