Why Gwendoline Christie’s Larissa Weems Becomes Wednesday’s New Spirit Guide in Season 2

In Wednesday Season 1, Jenna Ortega’s sharp-tongued anti-hero had a constant, if spectral, ally: her ancestor Goody Addams.

A 17th-century witch who settled in Jericho, Goody appeared through visions to help Wednesday track clues, uncover the Gates family’s secrets, and ultimately defeat Joseph Crackstone. By the finale, Goody’s mission was complete, and she returned to the afterlife in peace.

When Season 2 begins, Wednesday returns to Nevermore Academy after summer break. Her visions warn of Enid’s death, new supernatural threats circle the school, and even Pugsley surprises the family with a new ability. But this time, Goody isn’t there to offer cryptic guidance.

The Trailer’s Big Reveal

The second half of Wednesday Season 2, arriving September 3, delivers a surprise: Principal Larissa Weems, played by Gwendoline Christie, is back, not alive in the conventional sense, but as Wednesday’s new spirit guide. In Part 1, Weems was killed after being poisoned by Marilyn Thornhill. Now, she reappears to Wednesday alone, invisible to everyone else at Nevermore.

Co-creator Miles Millar told Netflix’s Tudum that bringing Christie back was a deliberate choice: “The audience has fallen in love with the Wednesday–Weems relationship… so we’re bringing her back in a very special way that is as confrontational as it is delicious.”

Not Exactly Alive, Not Fully Gone

Christie describes the spirit guide role as “someone who provides spiritual guidance, pulled from whatever dimension her soul has been floating in.” Her Season 2 presence is ethereal, beige-gold suits replace her trademark Hitchcock-inspired power looks, her signature red lipstick is gone, and her hairstyle is more subdued. The wardrobe shift, designed by Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, reflects a character caught between life and death.

Christie drew inspiration from Vertigo’s haunting atmosphere, quoting the film: “Do you believe that someone out of the past, someone dead, can enter and take possession of a living being?” It’s a question that perfectly fits Weems’s new existence in Wednesday’s world.

Why Goody Addams Steps Aside

While Netflix hasn’t issued an official in-universe explanation, the end of Season 1 made it clear: Goody’s purpose was fulfilled once Crackstone was defeated. Season 2 hints that Wednesday may have briefly summoned her ancestor again, but the need for a new guide, one with a different connection to Nevermore, became clear. Morticia even teases another psychic family member, Ophelia, in the season’s opening episode, suggesting there are other possible mentors from beyond.

A Guide for a More Dangerous Year

Season 2 raises the stakes: Wednesday must confront Tyler Galpin, whose monstrous form still threatens Nevermore, investigate why her powers are glitching, and face the unnerving presence of Morticia on campus. It’s the kind of challenge where even the fiercely independent Wednesday might welcome counsel, though she’d never admit it.

In the trailer, the first thing Wednesday sees when she wakes from a coma is Weems’s face. For viewers, it’s a thrilling callback; for Wednesday, it’s a reminder that death doesn’t always sever the ties that matter most.

In Wednesday Season 2, Larissa Weems steps into Goody Addams’s role not to replace her, but to guide Wednesday through a darker, more personal set of trials. The connection between student and principal, already rich with tension, now gains a supernatural edge. Whether as mentor, adversary, or both, Weems’s return promises to make the rest of the season unforgettable.
