⚠️ Spoiler Alert: This article contains major spoilers from Season 1 of Forever.
If the final scene of Forever Season 1 left you emotional and maybe craving ramen under the soft blue glow of that Hachioji sign, you’re not alone.
During the Netflix Upfronts, Netflix has officially renewed the breakout YA drama Forever for a second season, confirming that Keisha and Justin’s story isn’t over just yet.
A Modern Take on Young Love
Created by Mara Brock Akil (Girlfriends, The Game), Forever is a reimagining of Judy Blume’s 1975 novel, reframed through the lens of Black teenagers coming of age in 2018 Los Angeles. Instead of suburban New Jersey, we meet Keisha (Lovie Simone) and Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.), two teens who reconnect at a New Year’s Eve party after years apart. From that moment, their bond grows into a rich, complicated first love, one filled with missteps, growth, and everything in between.
Keisha and Justin: More Than a Love Story
Keisha is ambitious, focused, and deeply aware of what’s at stake for her family’s future. A track star with Ivy League potential, her goal is clear: earn a scholarship to Howard University and break generational barriers. “She understands she has to be perfect,” says Brock Akil. “There’s no room for mistakes.”
Justin, on the other hand, is still figuring things out. He’s expected to attend Northwestern, but he quietly dreams of pursuing music, something he struggles to admit, especially while managing ADHD and parental pressure. It’s through his connection with Keisha that he begins to find clarity and self-acceptance.

Season 1: A Love Worth Letting Go
Throughout eight heartfelt episodes, Forever explores everything from academic expectations to social media and code-switching in predominantly white spaces. In the end, Keisha and Justin choose to part ways, not out of anger, but because they know they need to grow on their own.
“I learned the importance of self-love through this show,” Cooper Jr. said. “You have to know yourself to truly show up for someone else.”
Even Simone, who plays Keisha, was struck by the emotional depth of the series. “There was so much maturity in how these two communicated. It gave me faith in what young love could be.”

What to Expect in Season 2
Now that the series has been renewed, the next chapter will explore life after their bittersweet goodbye. Keisha will finally step into the halls of Howard, her long-held dream. Brock Akil teases that this environment will challenge and shape her in new ways. “Howard was her first boyfriend,” she says with a smile. “Let’s be real.”
As for Justin, he’s facing a gap year with new clarity. No longer orbiting around Keisha, he’s tasked with discovering who he is, where he’s going, and what kind of man he wants to become.
“Who are they without each other?” Brock Akil asks. “And if the door is still open—how do you walk back through it?”
Season 2 promises to dig deeper into those questions, following two teens learning to stand on their own, while never closing the door on what brought them together in the first place.
