One year after its premiere on Netflix, I Hate Christmas returns with its second season.
Who rang Gianna’s doorbell on Christmas Eve?
Santa Claus arrived with a set of handwritten cards reminiscent of “Love Actually”. However, he couldn’t reveal who hired him to Gianna. When the nurse returns home, Umberto knocks on her door and recites a quote from the movie. Though we understand this to be merely a coincidence, Gianna believes that Umberto sent Santa Claus with the love cards, leading to a relationship between the two. A year has passed since that fateful evening. Fogliati’s new bangs help us understand the time jump. It’s December 1st all over again.
This year, Christmas seems to be more special for the leading lady as she has a boyfriend for the first time. However, her happiness will be short-lived as Christmas will cause her to make a mistake that will break her relationship with Umberto. Gianna will be caught kissing the same Santa Clause who had delivered love cards to her the previous year. Now, she has to start over and try to regain Umberto’s love. She will use the magic of Christmas and the Christmas Eve dinner to make things right.

Gianna has to plan her family dinner this year, leading to some unexpected surprises. With the assistance of her friends Margherita and Titti, as well as a peculiar new neighbor, Filippo, and her teenage daughter, Gianna will realize that love is like Santa’s Sleigh: when it’s there, it’s impossible not to recognize it.
OUR TAKE
The second season of the romantic Italian comedy is even more enjoyable than the first. In the first season, Gianna tries to find love and a boyfriend before Christmas Eve dinner, but she has to win him back in the second season. Although the story still takes place during the 24 days before Christmas, it is not repetitive. The plot and characters are engaging, amusing, and well-written.
The cast may not be well-known outside of Italy, but they have been very active in many Italian productions. Fogliati and Spollon are highly talented in both romantic and comedic roles. When Gianna, Titti, and Margherita are together, the scenes of female friendship and solidarity are both funny and silly yet meaningful. Moreover, the new friendship between Titti and Monica, Filippo’s teenage daughter, is portrayed in a heartwarming manner.
I HATE CHRISTMAS LOCATIONS
Please remember that the series is set in Chioggia, also known as ‘Little Venice,’ despite its resemblance to Venice. This small Italian town is not as well-known as other Italian cities or regions featured in previous Netflix series, such as Rome, Sicily, or Tuscany, making it a refreshing change. Its colorful architecture and beautiful bridges add to the town’s charm, making the series even more appealing.
The series is a must-watch due to its unique location and storyline, which do not rely on typical Italian stereotypes. This is especially recommended for viewers outside of Italy.

Food also plays a significant role in the series set in Veneto. Unlike the characters from Sex and the City, who drink Cosmopolitans, our girls enjoy the classic Aperol Spritz and typical Venetian “Cicchetti” at Filippo’s new bar. And since it’s Christmas time, they also indulge in Panettone and Pandoro.
The six episodes make it easy to binge. We’re excited for a possible third season to see how Gianna and Filippo’s love story develops.
I Hate Christmas is an Italian romantic comedy series based on the Norwegian series Home for Christmas.
