Last Seen episode 2 gives Ian the news he has wanted for 11 years: the body found in the woods does not belong to Maggie.
He still has no idea where his daughter is, but somewhere else in Port McKenna, a teenage girl named Sarah is beginning to remember a life her parents have kept hidden from her.
Sarah’s sheltered life begins to crack
Sarah lives with Henry and his wife Jenna, and her world barely extends beyond their property. She does not even leave to attend school.
The arrival of a new family on a neighboring farm gives her something she has been missing. She befriends their son Tommy, who quickly realizes how little Sarah knows about life outside her home. She explains the isolation through her family’s religious beliefs, but Henry’s behavior shows how determined he is to keep outsiders away.
When Tommy’s father visits and tries to introduce himself, Henry hides his family before getting rid of him.
Maggie’s case is also clearly troubling both Henry and Jenna. After Henry sees a flyer advertising a vigil for Maggie, he decides to attend while keeping Sarah away from what is happening.
Ian has his own reason for wanting the vigil to go ahead. The location where the child’s remains were discovered has made him reconsider the idea that a drifter abducted and killed Maggie. The burial site is secluded enough that Ian believes someone familiar with the area may have been responsible.
If that person is still nearby, Maggie’s vigil could bring them out.
Ian asks his son Dean to help. Dean was at home when Maggie disappeared and remembers answering the door that day, although the encounter never produced a useful lead. He has carried guilt over his sister’s disappearance ever since. At the vigil, his job is to hand out candles and look at the people attending in case seeing someone triggers a memory. Then Isabel Pena receives the DNA results.
The body isn’t Maggie’s
The remains discovered in the woods do not belong to Maggie Ridley.
Pena expects that this will mean canceling the vigil, but Ian asks her to let him tell his family himself. Instead, he allows the event to continue because he still wants to use it to identify someone connected to Maggie’s disappearance. The vigil produces nothing.
It also comes at a cost when Pena arrives and tells Deb the truth herself. Ian has kept the DNA result from his family to continue his attempt to find Maggie’s abductor, leaving both Deb and Dean angry with him.
With the case once again wide open and his sobriety under pressure, Ian returns to the emergency dispatch center. Working calls gives him something concrete to focus on.
At the same time, Henry’s decision to attend the vigil gives Sarah an opportunity she rarely gets. She leaves the property with Tommy.
He takes her to a party, exposing Sarah to an environment far removed from the isolated life she knows. She drinks soda and alcohol for the first time, but something else at the party has a much greater effect on her.
Sarah sees a flyer for a Maggie Ridley vigil; it brings back a memory of writing “Mags” on a log when she was little.
Confused by what she remembers, Sarah leaves the party and eventually ends up in the street. She finds a public phone and calls emergency services: Ian answers.
Last Seen episode 2 ending explained: Sarah is Maggie
During the call, Sarah begins to tell Ian that she may be Mags. After spending 11 years searching for his daughter, Ian realizes the girl speaking to him could be Maggie and leaves the dispatch center to find her. He reaches the location of the call, but Sarah is already gone.
The episode confirms what the first episode only suggested: Maggie survived her disappearance and has been living as Sarah with Henry and Jenna.
Sarah herself is only beginning to understand that the life she knows may not be her real history. Her memory of the name “Mags” gives her the first connection to Maggie, and calling emergency services puts her in direct contact with her biological father without either of them being reunited.
What happens immediately after the call remains unknown. Sarah is gone when Ian arrives, and the episode does not tell us who removed her from the location or where she goes.
