Last Seen episode 1 brings Ian Ridley back to the case that destroyed much of his life when the remains of a child are discovered more than a decade after his three-year-old daughter disappeared.
What initially looks like an answer to Maggie’s fate soon becomes more complicated, especially once the episode turns its attention to Donald’s brother Henry.
A body forces Ian back into Maggie’s disappearance
Eleven years have passed since Maggie Ridley was taken from her home. She was three years old at the time, and despite the search that followed, she was never found.
Her disappearance changed everything for her father. Ian was a police detective, but in the years that followed, his marriage ended, he left the police and struggled with alcohol. When we meet him, he has been sober for six months and is working as a supervisor for emergency services dispatch.
He is also in a relationship with Poly, who works for him. Ian seems to be trying to rebuild his life, although his job shows that some old habits remain. He cares deeply about helping people who call emergency services, sometimes enough to go beyond what his position requires.
Then police discover the remains of a child buried in the woods.
Ian goes to the scene, where lead investigator Isabel Pena does not welcome his involvement. The remains have been buried for more than a decade, and DNA testing is needed to establish the child’s identity. Given the age of the remains, however, Ian has reason to fear that Maggie may finally have been found.
His search for answers takes him to a man nearby who raises dogs. Maggie’s clothing is discovered in his kennel, immediately putting him under suspicion in Ian’s mind, but that possibility is soon ruled out.
The clothes create a different problem. Their connection to the remains gives Ian more reason to believe the dead child could be Maggie; the turmoil of emotions and guilt brings Ian to relapse.
Ian gets involved in an emergency call outside of work
While drunk, Ian focuses on a case that previously came through emergency services involving a woman and her abusive, intoxicated ex.
Instead of leaving the situation to the appropriate authorities, Ian becomes personally involved. His actions end in a violent confrontation at a public carnival. He is released the following day to his friend Donald, who has been supporting him in his attempt to remain sober.
Donald urges him to begin letting go of what happened to Maggie.
Ian then goes to see his ex-wife, Deb. Her life has changed considerably since their marriage ended. She is now married to Bill, a police officer, and they are expecting a child.
Deb is prepared to lay Maggie to rest. Ian agrees to take part in the upcoming ceremonies as well, seemingly accepting that the discovery in the woods may finally have answered the question that has followed them for 11 years.
The final scenes, however, give us a reason to question that conclusion.

Donald was not living in Port McKenna when Maggie disappeared, but his brother Henry was.
When Henry hears about the discovery of the child’s remains, his reaction draws attention to him. He quickly returns home to his own family, where we learn that he has a teenage daughter.
The episode stops there, without explaining why Henry is shaken by the discovery or establishing any connection between his daughter and Maggie.
Maggie’s clothing has been connected to the remains, but the child’s identity has not yet been confirmed by DNA testing. Ian and Deb are preparing to mourn their daughter based on what has been discovered, while the episode deliberately leaves open the possibility that the truth may be different from what they currently believe.
Henry’s behavior and the introduction of his teenage daughter add another question to Maggie’s disappearance, but episode 1 does not yet provide an answer.
