Lanterns Episode 1 introduces John Stewart as a Green Lantern in training, with Hal Jordan serving as a mentor whose methods leave quite a bit to be desired. What starts as another unconventional lesson soon sends them to Nebraska for an investigation into a suspected alien hiding in plain sight.
But the premiere isn’t entirely set in the past. The case happened ten years earlier, and when the story jumps to 2026, John returns to the same town without Hal. In this Lanterns Episode 1 recap, that return reveals why: Hal Jordan is dead, and his ring is missing.
John Stewart Grows Up Idolizing Hal Jordan
The premiere begins in 1996, when a young John Stewart watches Hal Jordan being interviewed on television.
Hal isn’t a secret superhero. His identity as Green Lantern is public after he saved Victoria Falls from a meteorite, and the interview gives viewers some of his history, including his father’s death in an aircraft accident and his own decision to become a pilot. More importantly to John, Hal talks about fear and the fact that he wasn’t born special. John is still watching when his father arrives home.
His father takes him outside, puts an apple on his head, and asks whether he’s afraid. John says no before his father blasts the apple away; afterward, father and son go for burgers. Twenty years later, John is training to become a Green Lantern himself.
Hal Has a Strange Way of Training John
Adult John is at the gym when Hal arrives late in a beat-up car to pick him up. Their relationship is already strained, and John isn’t particularly impressed with the way Hal is handling his training. Hal has recently disappeared for two weeks, which he explains by saying he was off-planet dealing with an intergalactic matter through diplomacy.
John has another complaint. Although the Guardian chose him, he still hasn’t been allowed to wear the ring. Hal tells him that being chosen isn’t enough; the ring decides when someone is ready.
Then he puts it on the dashboard, tells John to meet him at a taco place a few miles away, and jumps out of the moving car. John is still inside when the car flies off a hill.
Faced with little choice, he puts on the ring and uses it to save himself. His solution isn’t particularly glamorous: he creates bubble wrap around himself before the car hits the ground.
John later calls his father while walking toward the taco place and complains about Hal. His father advises him to keep his cool, even though John already knows that nothing with Hal is ever straightforward.
A Message Sends Hal and John to Nebraska
On the way, John’s new ring begins to glow, producing a holographic version of Hal. This isn’t the Hal waiting for him at the taco place. It’s a copy of Hal’s consciousness stored inside the ring, essentially a backup he can use to leave information for himself.
There’s one problem: Hal hasn’t updated it in roughly ten years; the backup has a message: there’s hail in Rushville, Nebraska.
John eventually reaches the taco place and finds the real Hal entertaining people who recognize him. Hal is mostly interested in how John survived the crash and gets a laugh out of the bubble-wrap solution, although he also gives John credit for making it work.
John returns the ring and passes along the message. Hal’s mood changes immediately. Without explaining anything, he flies to Nebraska and leaves John to find his own way there.
By the time John arrives, a football field has become a crime scene. Police cars surround the area, and Hal is already sitting in the stands. There’s been a mass shooting, but Hal believes the victims are going to turn out to be aliens.
Sheriff Kerry isn’t thrilled to have him interfering with her investigation. She lets the two Lanterns remain at the scene, but Hal’s certainty about what happened isn’t winning her over.
John Chases a Suspect While Hal Looks for Aliens
John is frustrated by how little Hal is telling him. When he notices a suspicious man nearby, he tries to help the investigation and instead alerts the man that he’s being watched; the suspect runs.
John chases him down and eventually catches him, but Sheriff Kerry refuses to let Hal interrogate the man simply because Hal thinks he’s an alien.
Later, John and Hal go to a local bar, where John pushes his mentor for answers. Hal explains that he was once transported to a crashed alien ship in Nebraska. He doesn’t believe the ship ended up on Earth by accident, particularly because the Guardians apparently didn’t want anyone coming near the planet.
Whatever is happening in town, Hal thinks it’s part of something much larger.
Hal comes up with a plan to get himself arrested so he can land in the same cell. It doesn’t work quite as intended. Instead of being locked up beside the man, he’s brought before a judge. Billy Macon unexpectedly comes to his rescue and pays his bail. He also happens to be Sheriff Kerry’s husband.
John has spent the night making a connection of his own. He meets a woman at the bar and sleeps with her, without yet knowing exactly who she is.
The Macon Family Offers Hal a Way In
Billy’s willingness to spend thousands of dollars helping two strangers naturally raises questions. He invites John and Hal to his father’s property to explain himself. The place turns out to be a huge compound built to support a militia.
Kerry warns Hal to stay away from her father-in-law, William Macon, advice Hal promptly ignores. William says the property doesn’t actually belong to him. He’s looking after it for someone whose identity he can’t reveal because of NDAs. What he’s much more willing to discuss is his concern about extraterrestrials. The militia is part of his preparation for an alien threat.
That gives William and Hal some common ground. William promises to help Hal get time alone with the suspect, giving him the opportunity Kerry has refused him. The visit also clears up the identity of the woman John met at the bar. She’s William’s wife and the grandmother of Kerry’s son.
That’s an awkward discovery for John, to put it mildly.
Hal Proves Their Suspect Isn’t Human
The next morning, Hal finally gets five minutes with the man John chased. Kerry believes he’s simply a man from Kimball, but John points out that some alien species can pass medical tests such as MRIs and X-rays without being identified as extraterrestrial.
Hal takes a different approach. Because the suspect claims he was at the football game, Hal starts asking him about football. The man can answer basic questions about his identity and background, but he struggles once Hal asks for specifics, and that’s enough for Hal.
Cornered, the suspect begins speaking hypothetically about what someone in his position might do. If he were an alien carrying out an important secret mission, he wouldn’t want a galactic peace organization discovering what he was doing. And if his identity were compromised, he would need a way to make sure nobody could expose him; he has exactly that.
There’s a biometric neutron device inside his skull, and he can activate it with a thought. The device is powerful enough to destroy the town.
A beeping sound begins before Hal can stop him. Hal throws the man into a corner and creates a protective bubble around him: the suspect explodes. Hal’s barrier contains enough of the blast to prevent anyone from being hurt, although the explosion tears a hole through the wall. The alien threat Hal had been warning everyone about was real.
Lanterns Episode 1 Ending Explained: John Finds Hal’s Body
The story then jumps forward to 2026.
An older John drives back into the same Nebraska town where he and Hal investigated the shooting ten years earlier. He meets Kerry near the football field, and their warm reunion shows that they’ve remained on good terms. She tells him that her son is now a quarterback, but Kerry hasn’t called John there to catch up.
She takes him toward the snow-covered bleachers, where Hal’s frozen body is sitting with a wound on his head. John touches his fingers; the ring is gone.
The ending confirms that Hal is dead when John finds him, but we don’t know what happened to him or who took his Green Lantern ring. It’s also unclear why his body was left at the same football field where he and John investigated the alien case ten years earlier, or whether the two events are connected at all.
For now, that’s the mystery the premiere leaves us with: Hal is dead, his ring is missing, and John has been brought back to Nebraska to find out what happened.
