Lanterns Season 1 Episode 8 Recap and Ending Explained: Who Killed Hal Jordan?

Lanterns Season 1 Episode 8 finally answers the murder mystery that has driven John Stewart back to Rushville. Hal Jordan’s death is tied directly to the secret he discovered about Noah, but finding his killer is only part of the finale. John also has to decide what kind of Green Lantern he wants to be, and whether Noah deserves the chance to make that same choice for himself.

What Happened to Hal After Rushville?

The finale first takes us back ten years, shortly after everything went wrong in Rushville. Kerry finds Hal at the motel following his fight with John and Zoe, and Hal accepts that he will have to live with what happened. He also knows the Guardians now have every reason to remove him.

Years later, Hal is released from prison and finds Kerry waiting for him. The two return to Rushville together, where their relationship quickly becomes public despite the hostility Hal still faces from the people living there. Someone even sets Hal’s home on fire.

He tries to escape with Earl but loses consciousness. When Hal wakes, he is inside the same slaughterhouse where Zoe previously healed John. A circular scar on his arm shows that the same technology has now been used on him.

The person responsible for saving him is Noah Macon. Noah reveals that he is a Manhunter, something even his mother does not know he has discovered about himself.

John Learns Why Noah Needed Sinestro

On the distant planet, John is getting his own answers from Sinestro.

Hal had previously reached the planet and told Sinestro what was happening after learning that Noah was responsible for breaking him out of prison. John wants to know why Noah would take such a risk, especially when Noah later killed Hal despite first saving his life.

Sinestro eventually reveals what Noah wanted from him: a new lantern. This one is powered differently. Its yellow energy contains an essence drawn from the fear surrounding the planet. Sinestro believes the Guardians have misunderstood fear by treating it as something that must be eliminated. To him, fear can instead become an enormous source of power.

More importantly for John, the lantern can charge his ring. Sinestro wants him to use it.

Halogram Hal initially warns John against doing so, while Sinestro tries to manipulate both men. He tells Hal that getting the ring could allow him to return permanently, while suggesting that charging it from this lantern could cause Halogram Hal to disappear.

John is more interested in why Noah freed Sinestro in the first place. He reaches a disturbing conclusion. Sinestro is the only person who has killed a Guardian before, and Noah wants revenge for what happened to his grandmother. Yet Noah has not acted on that plan.

For John, that hesitation is fundamental.

He leaves Sinestro trapped on the planet and heads for the portal with Hal. Before John goes through, Hal urges him to charge the ring so he has a way to defend himself against Noah, but John refuses.

As soon as he crosses through the portal, however, Noah is waiting.

Why Did Noah Kill Hal Jordan?

Noah overpowers John and takes both the ring and lantern.

As they drive together, Noah wants answers about Zoe. John explains why he ultimately killed her and what he came to understand about the way she operated. He believes Zoe saved people in ways that made them indebted to her, including waiting until John was close to death before healing him.

He also believes Zoe wanted him to kill her. She could not stop herself, and her death would help keep Noah’s existence hidden.

John then leaves Noah to decide what happens next; Noah chooses to take him to the game.

There, he finally tells John what happened with Hal.

Noah did not start the fire at Hal’s house. He saved him and expected Hal to keep his secret. The problem came when Hal discovered Noah’s portal and learned about Sinestro. Noah could not risk Hal telling Kerry the truth, so Noah killed him.

He also admits that he struggles to separate his own thoughts and desires from the programming inside him. Part of him wants an ordinary life in Nebraska. Another part recognizes how much power he has and imagines what he could do with it.

Eventually, Noah gives John the ring back. Then he asks John to kill him.

Noah wants the same mercy John gave Zoe, fearing what he could eventually become. He asks John to wait until after the game and make his death quick. John does not agree to it.

Kerry Reveals What Really Happened the Night Hal Died

There is still another piece of Hal’s death that John needs to understand.

He finds Kerry watching Noah’s game and lets her know that he has worked out her secret. Kerry then explains what happened between her and Hal.

Years earlier, Zoe had regenerated a finger Kerry lost. Something unexpected happened during the process, and Kerry became pregnant despite not having been intimate with anyone for months; that child was Noah.

Kerry knew what he was, but believed raising him with love could prevent his Manhunter nature from defining him.

Hal eventually discovered the truth. He confronted Kerry about Noah and told her that Noah already knew what he was. Hal wanted them to go somewhere isolated and work out what to do, while Kerry refused to leave her son. Their argument escalated and Kerry shot Hal in the head.

The shooting itself was not planned. Kerry says it happened during the argument before she could fully process what she had done.

She later called John to Rushville, knowing there was a chance he would uncover the truth. What she really wanted was an answer about Noah. She needed to know whether she had raised a son capable of choosing his own life or whether his Manhunter nature was taking over.

John believes she already has her answer. Noah protected his mother from being blamed for Hal’s death and later asked John to kill him because he was terrified of what he might become. For John, that does not make Noah a monster. It means he is still capable of choosing.

Kerry intends to turn herself in after the game, but John tells her not to. For now, Noah gets his chance at a normal life.

Lanterns Ending Explained: Does John Stewart Become Green Lantern?

Yes. And John does it on his own terms.

Before leaving Rushville, John summons Guy Gardner with the Green Lantern signal. Guy immediately notices Hal’s ring and accuses John of using him to get it. John is no longer interested in being told what he is allowed to do.

He proposes an arrangement. Guy can remain Green Lantern of Sector 2814 and deal with what happens beyond Earth. John will protect Earth, and Guy can tell the Guardians to leave him alone.

Guy reluctantly accepts. Once he is gone, Hal appears to John one final time.

Hal believes John will become a better Green Lantern than he was, but John does not want to repeat the traditional oath. It is too absolute for everything he has learned about fear, choice, and the people he has met in Rushville; Hal tells him to create his own.

Before disappearing, Hal asks John to remember his final words. John tells him that Hal said, “I love you,” and Hal answers, “I love you too, Junior.”

Then Hal is gone. John charges the ring and creates a new oath built around accepting fear rather than pretending it does not exist. He leaves Rushville, pays Maggie the money she demanded, and returns home to his family wearing the ring.

The final scene belongs completely to John Stewart. He rises into the sky and sends the Green Lantern symbol across it. After everything that happened in Rushville, John is no longer waiting for the Guardians, Hal or anyone else to decide whether he is worthy. He has chosen the ring for himself.

Lanterns has not been renewed for Season 2 yet, but one of the best parts of the series is the chemistry between Hal and John. So, if a second season does happen, hopefully the writers can find a way to bring Kyle Chandler back in some form. It would be a shame to lose that pairing completely.
