Ted is officially back at Richmond, but returning to the club doesn’t mean simply putting the old team back together. His new job comes with a different group of players, an assistant coach who is ready to quit, and one very important person still missing from his side.
By the end of “Curiouser and Curiouser,” Ted has made progress on two fronts. Coach Chilton agrees to stay with the women’s team, while Roy finds a way to release Coach Beard from the men’s side so he can reunite with Ted.
After the Season 4 premiere brought Ted back into Richmond’s orbit and presented him with the chance to coach the new women’s team, Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 gets down to the actual work. Ted has to learn who his players are and build a coaching staff around them, while Rebecca, Keeley, Roy, and Higgins deal with what starting a women’s team means for the club.
Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 Recap: Ted Starts His New Job
Ted is settling back into Richmond life, including a new flat on top of Mae’s pub. Some of his old habits return with him, although not quite in the same form. His usual Biscuits with the Boss routine with Rebecca gets a Kansas City barbecue replacement as he prepares to take charge of the women’s team.
His first press conference quickly shows where much of the attention still lies. Instead of focusing entirely on Ted’s new team, reporters are interested in his thoughts about Richmond’s men’s side.
There are bigger concerns behind the scenes, too. Higgins gives Rebecca a report detailing the difficulties involved in launching a women’s team, but the challenges don’t change her plans. Richmond is moving ahead.
Keeley gets involved by making sure the players have proper facilities. The visitor’s locker room is redone for the women’s team, a project that also puts her back in Roy’s company. The two aren’t together anymore, but they’re now working around each other again as the club prepares for its new chapter.
For Ted, the immediate task is getting to know the players he will actually be coaching.
There’s talent in the group, along with some strong personalities. Goalkeeper Boots stands out early, particularly because of her unusual attitude toward both her position and physical pain. Ted has a lot to learn about the team he has inherited, but the players aren’t his only adjustment.
Why Does Coach Chilton Want to Leave Richmond?
Coach Chilton has already been doing much of the work needed to keep the women’s team going before Ted takes over.
She is committed enough to the job that she has prepared a detailed scouting report for him, but Ted’s arrival also puts her in a difficult position. Chilton wanted the head coaching job herself. More importantly, she’s unhappy that Rebecca didn’t consider a woman for the position before hiring Ted.
Rather than remain as Ted’s assistant, Chilton decides to resign at the end of the week.
Ted doesn’t simply accept the decision. He makes it clear that he wants Chilton on his coaching staff and spends the week trying to convince her to reconsider.
It doesn’t immediately work. As the end of the week approaches, Chilton still intends to leave.
Ted makes one final attempt to change her mind, and this time he succeeds. Chilton agrees to stay, giving Ted an assistant who already knows the team and has been working with the players.
His coaching staff still isn’t quite complete, though.
Roy Realizes Coach Beard Wants to Be With Ted
Coach Beard’s reunion with Ted is much less straightforward.
Beard is now working alongside Roy with Richmond’s men’s team, and Ted would like to have his longtime friend coaching with him again. Beard doesn’t exactly make that easy. His appearance has changed considerably, with much longer hair and facial hair, and his initial behavior toward Ted is distant.
That doesn’t stop him from secretly meeting Ted for a pint at the pub. Instead of immediately restoring their old friendship, however, the meeting is awkward. Roy notices what is going on.
He talks to Keeley about Beard, and they agree that keeping Ted and Beard on separate coaching staffs isn’t the right answer. Instead of forcing Beard to make the uncomfortable decision himself, Roy finds another way to handle it.
He approaches Beard in the locker room and tells him that he has broken one of the men’s team’s rules. The violation means Beard has to leave the team.
Roy also points out that another team might not enforce the same rule so strictly, a technical way of giving Beard permission to go.
