What Happens in Sterling Point?
Annie Jacobson has always been someone with a plan.
At the start of the series, she believes she knows exactly what her future looks like until everything begins falling apart in a matter of hours. She isn’t accepted into the prestigious summer program she had been counting on before her senior year, her longtime boyfriend Oliver effectively ends their relationship, and she learns that her estranged grandfather Gordon has died.
Although Annie and her twin brother Connor haven’t seen Gordon since they were children, his death brings an unexpected surprise.
He leaves them Sterling Point, the private island he owned in Muskoka, along with letters he wanted them to read after his death.
Their father, Steven, immediately hides those letters, making Annie even more suspicious about why Gordon wanted to contact them after so many years.
Unable to ignore her curiosity, Annie secretly retrieves the letters from Steven’s safe and discovers Gordon’s final request.
He apologizes for “going along with the plan,” encourages Annie to travel to Sterling Point to uncover the truth, and tells her to “find her.”
Without telling anyone where she’s really going, Annie leaves New York for Canada.
Her arrival on Sterling Point immediately feels like stepping into another world. The quiet island is nothing like the city she’s used to, and almost everyone she meets seems connected to her family’s past.
The first person she grows close to is Ellis, the young pilot who flies her to the island. Their easy conversations make the unfamiliar place feel a little less intimidating, even if Annie insists she’s only visiting as a renter, but that lie doesn’t last long.
Inside Gordon’s cottage, Annie is confronted by another teenage girl who insists the house belongs to her family.
The girl is Ramona.
At first, neither of them understands why they’re both connected to the same cottage, but the truth slowly begins to emerge. Annie discovers that Ramona’s mother is Goldie, the same woman Annie has always known as her own late mother.
The revelation leaves both girls stunned.
Neither of them knew the other existed.
As Annie begins investigating Goldie’s past, she learns that the version of her mother she grew up hearing about was incomplete. Gordon had hidden years of letters from Annie and Connor, while Sterling Point itself is filled with photographs, keepsakes and people who remember Goldie in ways Annie never could.
Among the people who knew her best is Joe, who owns the local marina. Annie learns that he and Goldie dated when they were teenagers, and an old mixtape recorded by Goldie reveals just how important Joe once was in her life.
As Annie digs deeper, another mystery emerges.
Joe was present the night Goldie died.
That revelation eventually leads Annie and Ellis to believe Joe could also be Ramona’s biological father, especially after Ellis discovers documents showing Joe became Ramona’s legal guardian following Gordon’s death.
While Annie searches for answers, she slowly begins building a relationship with Ramona. It isn’t easy.
Ramona initially refuses to accept Annie as family, insisting that because Annie was adopted, they aren’t really sisters. But living under the same roof gradually changes both of them. Arguments give way to conversations, and eventually the two begin sharing memories, fears, and experiences neither of them has ever been able to tell anyone else.
At the same time, Annie finds herself caught between two very different relationships.
Rory represents the life she always expected to return to in New York. Their shared history draws them back together, and after Annie’s eighteenth birthday, the two spend the night together. Yet even as Rory imagines a future with her, Annie finds herself becoming increasingly attached to Sterling Point. Much of that has to do with Ellis.
Unlike Rory, Ellis never pressures Annie to become someone else. Whether she’s overwhelmed by grief or questioning her identity, he simply listens. Their friendship slowly turns into something deeper, and by the final stretch of the season it’s clear Annie has fallen in love with him.
Ramona experiences her own first love through Oona.
Their relationship develops just as naturally, beginning with friendship before growing into something more. But both girls struggle with their own fears. Ramona worries she isn’t enough, while Oona is terrified of being abandoned. Their feelings bring them together, but they also become one of the season’s most heartbreaking storylines.
Connor arrives at Sterling Point with a very different goal.
Unlike Annie, he isn’t interested in uncovering family history. He wants to sell the island.
Connor sees Sterling Point as an opportunity to become rich, but spending time there gradually changes his perspective. Although he never becomes as emotionally attached to the island as Annie, he slowly begins understanding why it matters so much to his sisters.
Everything changes once the truth about Ramona’s family finally comes to light.
Believing she’s helping, Denise publicly reveals that Joe is Ramona’s biological father before Ramona has the chance to hear it from anyone else.
The betrayal devastates her.
Learning that Annie and Ellis already knew makes the situation even worse, and Ramona runs away, convinced everyone has been lying to her.
Her disappearance forces every character to confront the choices they’ve made and the secrets they’ve kept.
It also sets the stage for the season’s biggest twist.
Sterling Point Ending Explained
The biggest surprise in the finale isn’t that Ramona learns another secret.
It’s that nearly everyone had the wrong secret.
For much of the second half of the season, Annie and Ellis become convinced that Joe is Ramona’s biological father. The evidence seems impossible to ignore. Joe admits he was with Goldie before she died, Ellis discovers legal papers showing Joe became Ramona’s guardian after Gordon’s death, and an old recording of Goldie speaking to Joe about her unborn baby appears to confirm their suspicions.
When Denise publicly reveals that Joe is Ramona’s father, everyone believes the mystery has finally been solved, but it hasn’t.
After noticing that she and Steven are both colorblind, Ramona begins questioning whether something about the story doesn’t add up. She secretly orders a DNA test, and the results completely change everything.
Steven is her biological father.
The discovery forces Annie to confront emotions she never expected. Throughout her life, she struggled with being adopted while searching for a connection to her past. Learning that Goldie and Steven had a biological child together doesn’t change the love her father has for her, but it makes Annie question where she fits into the family she has always known.
Steven does everything he can to reassure her that nothing has changed.
For Annie, though, the issue isn’t about being loved less.
It’s about finally allowing herself to acknowledge years of feelings she had pushed aside while trying to take care of everyone else. She realizes she spent much of her childhood looking after her grieving father instead of simply being a child herself.
Ramona faces a different challenge.
After spending years believing Gordon was the only family she had left, she suddenly learns she has a father who has been alive all along. Although Steven wants to build a relationship with her, Ramona isn’t looking for instant answers. She has barely begun processing one family before another appears in front of her.
Joe also receives a measure of closure.
When Annie finally asks him what really happened the day Goldie died, he explains that Goldie intended to return to New York after Steven took Annie and Connor home. She never got the chance.
During Ramona’s birth, doctors performed an emergency C-section after complications caused by an undiagnosed heart condition. Goldie died before she was able to hold her daughter for the first time.
It’s a heartbreaking revelation because it removes the guilt Ramona had carried ever since learning her mother died during childbirth. Goldie’s death wasn’t caused by Ramona. It was the result of a medical condition no one knew she had.
Not every relationship gets a happy ending.
Oona and Ramona’s growing romance falls apart after the possibility of Ramona moving to New York creates uncertainty about their future. Rather than risk being left behind, Oona ends the relationship before either of them has the chance to see where life takes them.
Connor also reaches an important turning point.
After spending most of the summer talking about selling Sterling Point, he receives a call from the adoption agency informing him that his birth mother wants to meet him. The moment opens a completely new chapter in his own story just as the season comes to a close.
The finale ends with Annie and Ramona making a decision neither of them could have imagined when they first met.
Initially, Ramona wants to sell Sterling Point and move on. Annie reluctantly agrees to support her before realizing she isn’t ready to let the island go. She asks Ramona to give her one more year to continue discovering who Goldie was and why Sterling Point meant so much to her.
Instead of choosing one life together, the sisters choose to experience the lives each other never had.
Ramona moves to New York to begin building a relationship with Steven, finally getting the chance to know the father she never realized was hers.
Annie stays behind in Sterling Point.
For the first time in her life, she isn’t following a carefully planned path or trying to live up to someone else’s expectations. She’s simply allowing herself to discover who she is, surrounded by the people and the place that connect her to the mother she barely had the chance to know.
Will There Be a Sterling Point Season 2?
At the time of writing, Prime Video has not renewed Sterling Point for Season 2.
Even so, the finale leaves plenty of storylines unfinished.
Annie chooses to remain in Sterling Point, where her relationship with Ellis is only just beginning and where she hopes to continue learning about Goldie’s life. Ramona starts an entirely different chapter by moving to New York to build a relationship with Steven, while Connor prepares to meet his birth mother after receiving a call from the adoption agency.
Those storylines all remain unresolved by the end of Season 1, giving the series room to continue if it returns.
For now, though, fans will have to wait for Prime Video to announce whether Annie, Ramona and the rest of Sterling Point’s residents will be back for another season.
