Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Episode 1 “Never Geo On One Knee”

In the premiere episode of Netflix’s horror drama, Rachel and Nicky travel to a remote family vacation home to prepare for their upcoming wedding. Their journey is immediately plagued by unsettling coincidences, a terrifying roadside encounter, and a direct written warning to call off the marriage.

Tension Builds on a Snowy Road to the Cunningham Lodge

The series opener of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen utilizes a stark flash-forward to establish its tone. Rachel, portrayed by Camila Morrone, walks down the aisle in a wedding dress. Her breathing is heavy beneath her veil. A brief exchange of smiles with her groom, Nicky (Adam DiMarco), quickly gives way to a montage of screaming faces and a large animal pacing down a blood-stained corridor.

Reverting to five days before the ceremony, the narrative finds the couple driving through a dark, snowy night. Rachel momentarily falls asleep at the wheel, narrowly avoiding a collision with a school bus. To keep her awake, Nicky discusses a local frozen custard shop called Coldies and its founder, Larry Poole, a man responsible for the deaths of three women.

They listen to a podcast featuring a survivor of Poole’s attacks. The woman recounts finding a toy shoe and escaping by telling Poole she was pregnant. Later, at a diner, Rachel draws the Coldies logo with perfect accuracy despite claiming she has never seen it before.

An Unsettling Discovery at a Deserted Rest Stop

Rachel’s own past carries heavy weight, as her mother died when she was an infant. This history appears to complicate her feelings regarding motherhood. The drive grows more stressful when the couple pulls into a rest stop with only one other vehicle in the lot.

The vehicle is locked with a crying baby left inside. Rachel enters the restroom to search for the parents. Instead of finding people, she discovers a doll shoe on the floor beneath a stall and a dead, mutilated animal inside one of the toilets.

Nicky remains with the vehicle while Rachel drives to find assistance. She passes an abandoned Coldies branch and stops at a dive bar. The bartender, a woman wearing a name tag labeled “Benjamin,” reluctantly places a call to the police from a back office.

While waiting, Rachel encounters a silent man in the bathroom. When he later approaches her in the main bar area, she defends herself by stabbing him in the hand with a car key. He removes the key and hands it back to her, asking, “Are you sure he’s the one?” Rachel flees the bar, noticing a truck with the words “Just Married” scrawled on the back in a dark substance. Upon returning to the rest stop, the car and baby are gone; the family had returned and punched Nicky after assuming he was attempting to steal the child.

The Sorry Man Legend Takes Shape at the Lodge

The couple completes their drive to a gated, heavily shadowed vacation cabin that resembles a ski lodge. The interior is dark, and the couple is instructed never to look the taxidermied dogs in the eyes.

While retrieving ice for Nicky’s bruised face in the kitchen, Rachel meets his sister Portia (Gus Birney), brother Jules (Jeff Wilbusch), and sister-in-law Nell (Karla Crome). Portia shares the local urban legend of the “Sorry Man.”

According to the story, a young Jules witnessed this entity cutting a woman open while weeping and apologizing. The legend claims the entity comes from hell to find his missing wife inside other women and is highly attracted to blood and brides.

The episode concludes with a series of bizarre occurrences. Rachel requests that Nicky lock her inside a trunk at the foot of the bed before they go to sleep. Waking up with a nosebleed, she wanders the house and finds the front door swinging open. She encounters Nicky’s mother, Victoria (Jennifer Jason Leigh), standing silently in the dark. After Nicky’s father, Boris (Ted Levine), escorts Victoria back to bed, Rachel looks at the mail scattered on the floor. She finds her own wedding invitation with a stark message scrawled on the back: “DON’T MARRY HIM.”

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Episode 2 “Bride-Shaped Hole”

In the second episode of Netflix’s horror drama, Rachel’s wedding preparations take a dark turn when her wedding dress vanishes from the family lodge. As she investigates the disappearance, the increasingly erratic behavior of Nicky’s relatives forces her into a state of severe paranoia.

Tensions Rise During a Hostile Wedding Dress Fitting

The episode begins four days before the wedding ceremony as Rachel and Nicky join the Cunningham family for brunch at Somerhouse. Nicky’s mother, Victoria, delivers an unusual speech centered on marriage, time, and personal sacrifice.

Following the meal, Rachel shows Nicky the anonymous “DON’T MARRY HIM” warning she received the previous night. The couple speculates on whether it originated from a resentful former partner or a member of the Cunningham family. Rachel’s stress levels compound when she discovers that her wedding dress is no longer in their bedroom closet. Despite the string of bizarre events, Nicky remains outwardly optimistic.

While walking through the lodge, Rachel overhears family members whispering about a secret concerning Victoria. She also encounters Nicky’s nephew, Jude, staring at the floor where her nose bled the night before. Jude expresses a fear that a local entity known as the “Sorry Man” intends to kill Rachel, though his father, Jules, dismisses the claim.

Bizarre Rituals and a Morbid Discovery at the Cabin

Believing the wedding dress may have been left behind with friends, Nicky leaves the cabin to retrieve it. In his absence, Victoria suggests that Rachel wear her own vintage wedding dress.

During the fitting, Nellie (Karla Crome) and Portia (Gus Birney) aggressively alter the garment on Rachel’s body. The atmosphere grows tense as Rachel learns that the “small family wedding” actually involves 100 relatives. The fitting is abruptly halted when Portia opens a bottle of champagne and the flying cork shatters a mirror, sending a glass shard into her arm.

Amid the chaos, Victoria makes a cryptic apology to Rachel regarding “what this will do to you both.” Distressed, Rachel calls Nicky and begs him to return. Shortly after, she discovers her empty dress bag hidden under the bed.

Rachel follows suspicious noises through the cabin, finding a torn shred of her dress and a book on supernatural rituals in Portia’s messy bedroom. Continuing her search, she enters Jules’ room and finds a case containing needles and pentobarbital sodium, a potent sedative. Jules catches her snooping and makes unsettling jokes about her presence in the room while helping her unbutton the heavy wedding dress.

The Cunningham Family Unveils a Bleak Reality

Rachel eventually leaves the dinner table to investigate a flashlight beam she spotted in the woods. Trudging into the dark with only her phone for light, she discovers her missing wedding dress tied to branches to form a large stick doll.

Further in the woods, she spots Nicky’s father, Boris, digging a large hole under a tent. Fearing for her life and believing the family intends to sacrifice her, Rachel flees and runs directly into Nicky, who has just driven up.

When the couple confronts the gathered family, the truth about the Cunninghams is revealed. Boris explains that Victoria is dying from an aggressive, untreatable brain tumor. The family has been quietly preparing for her death and the hole in the woods is her intended final resting place. The family wanted one last celebration before her passing.

It is revealed that Nicky had no prior knowledge of his mother’s terminal illness. The missing wedding dress incident is also resolved when it is revealed that young Jude stole and displayed the dress in a misguided attempt to ward off the Sorry Man. The family repeatedly chants that the legend is not real to comfort the boy. However, the episode concludes with the camera revealing an ominous, unidentified figure watching the cabin from the dark woods.

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Episode 3 Recap: Fake Funeral and a Kidnapping

In the third installment of Netflix’s horror drama, Rachel attempts to help the Cunningham family process the news of Victoria’s terminal illness. However, her efforts to mend familial fractures culminate in a disturbing ritual and a terrifying physical abduction.

Unseen Eyes Watch the Cunningham Lodge

The episode opens with a tense first-person shot, implying that an unidentified person is moving through the lodge. The sequence briefly cuts to Nicky’s father, Boris, skinning a deceased dog in his taxidermy room. He pauses at an odd noise but finds no intruder.

The heavy-breathing perspective returns, watching Rachel and Nicky as they sleep. The next morning, Rachel leaves the cabin early to buy an apology cake and flowers for the family to smooth over the misunderstandings from the previous night.

While she writes an apology note, the camera frequently implies she is still being watched, though no one is ever visible behind her. Overwhelmed by his mother’s aggressive brain tumor diagnosis, Nicky admits to feeling crushed by the situation. Rachel suggests postponing the wedding, but Nicky insists on moving forward with the ceremony.

Rachel Faces Resistance and Bizarre Family Dynamics

While helping with wedding preparations, Rachel speaks with Nicky’s sister, Portia. Rachel explains that she is naturally wired toward paranoia. Portia counters by mentioning that she could not find a digital or social media footprint for Rachel, though Rachel does not elaborate on why. Despite some cutting remarks from Portia, Rachel asks her to be her maid of honor, a request that goes unanswered.

Later, Rachel sits with Victoria as she looks through childhood photos of Nicky. Victoria takes a Polaroid of Rachel to add to the pile. When the conversation pivots to how the family is processing Victoria’s impending death, Victoria asks Rachel if she has properly processed her own mother’s passing. Rachel claims there is nothing to process since her mother died when she was an infant, but Victoria cryptically notes that Rachel herself is “what’s left.”

The atmosphere in the house remains highly dysfunctional. Rachel accidentally walks in on a disturbing moment between Jules and Nell in the bathroom, where Jules forces Nell to simulate drowning him in the bathtub.

A Morbid Ritual Ends in Terror

Leveraging her background as a doctoral student in behavioral psychology, Rachel calls a family meeting to compel the Cunninghams to communicate openly. Her attempts at group therapy fail to make any real headway, leading her to advise that they take time alone to process their emotions.

Later that night, the family gathers outdoors in a circle illuminated by candles. Sitting with their backs to Victoria, they verbally express their feelings about her illness and proceed to burn a crafted effigy as part of a symbolic fake funeral.

While the ritual takes place, young Jude explores the property with a video camera Rachel gave him. He wanders into Boris’ dark taxidermy room. As Jude turns the camera, a terrifying, unidentified man is seen standing perfectly still against the wall.

The episode ends on a harrowing cliffhanger. While the rest of the house sleeps, Rachel goes to the kitchen to eat a slice of the cake she bought earlier. A man, implied to be the figure Jude spotted in the taxidermy room, grabs her from behind and violently drags her out of the lodge.

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Episode 4 “The Witness”

The fourth episode of Netflix’s horror drama shifts focus to Rachel’s childhood and the truth behind her mother’s death. Through recovered camcorder footage and a confrontation with a mysterious figure, Rachel learns that a supernatural curse directly threatens her upcoming wedding.

Found Footage Reveals a Horrific Past

The episode begins in the aftermath of Rachel’s abduction. Jude informs his father, Jules, of the struggle and shows him the video he recorded of the intruder in the taxidermy room. Jules reacts with visible terror upon seeing the figure.

The narrative then cuts to video footage playing on a television set. The tape is dated January 1997 and features a young couple, Jay and Ali, in upstate New York preparing for their wedding. Ali, played by guest star Victoria Pedretti, is pregnant with Rachel.

As the footage plays, Rachel’s parents are seen driving past the same dive bar Rachel visited in the premiere and stopping at a functioning Coldies custard stand. The worker serving them is Larry Poole, the killer Nicky mentioned in episode 1.

Arriving at a snowy cabin, Ali admits to having vivid dreams about the location and sensing a future dread surrounding her grown-up daughter. At their wedding, a man holding the camera asks Ali, “Are you sure he’s the one?”, the exact phrase repeated to Rachel at the bar in the present day.

Back at the cabin after the wedding, Ali begins to bleed profusely from her nose and eyes. As she dies, she pleads with Jay to save the baby. Jay is forced to use a knife to perform an emergency cesarean section to deliver Rachel, crying and repeating “I’m sorry” as he does so.

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Recap & Ending Explained

The Origin of the Sorry Man Legend

In the present day, it is revealed that Rachel is watching this tape. Her kidnapper is her biological father, Jay. He explains that he abducted her to reveal the truth and warn her. He admits to sending the anonymous “DON’T MARRY HIM” note, claiming that she is doomed to repeat her mother’s fate if she goes through with the wedding.

Jules suddenly breaks into the cabin with a firearm and identifies Jay as the “Sorry Man.” However, seeing Jay and recalling the cabin’s layout triggers a breakthrough for Jules. As a child, he had run away and hidden under the bed in this very cabin on the night Rachel was born.

Jules witnessed Jay frantically cutting open his wife to save the baby while sobbing apologies. The terrifying local legend of a monster turning women inside out was merely a young boy’s traumatized, misunderstood memory of a desperate medical emergency.

A Generational Curse is Unlocked

Leaving Jay and Jules behind, Rachel drives to the roadside dive bar to confront the elderly man who previously questioned her. He reveals himself to be an immortal figure known as “The Witness.”

The Witness explains a generational curse that originated with Rachel’s ancestors. A bride once begged Death to return her deceased soulmate. Death agreed, but cursed the lineage: every descendant must find and marry their absolute, true soulmate before sundown on their wedding day, or they will die.

The Witness hands Rachel a marriage license. He explains that if Nicky is her genuine soulmate, she will survive the wedding. If he is not, she will die just as her mother did. Furthermore, if she calls off the wedding to save herself, the lethal curse will be passed on to Nicky and the Cunningham family.

Jules and Jay arrive at the bar to find Rachel. Realizing her father needs closure regarding the Witness and her mother’s death, she leaves them at the bar. In the parking lot, she discovers a promotional coin from the Coldies stand. Re-entering the car with Jules, Rachel admits that she now fully believes in the reality of the curse.

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Episode 5 “I Think You Just Saved My Life”

In the fifth episode of Netflix’s horror drama, Rachel and Nicky’s rehearsal dinner becomes the stage for severe tension. As a localized snowstorm traps the family inside the cabin, long-buried lies about the couple’s initial meeting threaten to dismantle Rachel’s belief that Nicky is her true soulmate.

Seeds of Doubt at the Cunningham Rehearsal Dinner

The episode picks up two days before the wedding. Despite learning about the lethal family curse in the previous episode, Rachel remains determined to go through with the ceremony. She expresses to Jules that she is “92 percent sure” Nicky is her soulmate. Jules, heavily burdened by the memory of Rachel’s mother’s death, remains skeptical and urges her to find absolute certainty.

As a blizzard builds outside the lodge, the extended Cunningham family gathers for the rehearsal dinner. Nicky’s father, Boris, delivers a speech detailing how he met Victoria while working as a medical doctor, framing their bond as a classic example of soulmates.

Throughout the evening, Rachel finds herself repeating the story of how she and Nicky met three years prior. According to her narrative, she was having a severe panic attack before boarding a flight in Austin. Nicky offered to skip the flight and drive with her instead. Overwhelmed by the social pressure and the weight of the curse, Rachel consumes multiple drinks with every retelling of the story.

A Gazing Exercise Triggers Terrifying Visions

The narrative introduces a strange coincidence when Nicky informs Rachel that the man who punched him at the rest stop in episode 1 is actually a caterer for the party. The two men apparently attended elementary school together.

Following the advice of a wedding guest, Rachel and Nicky participate in a five-minute exercise in uninterrupted eye contact. The forced intimacy quickly backfires. As Rachel stares at Nicky, the seeds of doubt planted by Jules begin to grow. She experiences a sudden, vivid flash of her own death, which mirrors the horrific, bloody passing of her mother. Visibly shaken, she breaks eye contact and pulls Nicky away to join the dance floor.

Meanwhile, Jules conducts his own investigation. Still feeling responsible for Rachel’s safety because of his mother’s dying words, he scours social media to research Nicky’s dating history. He discovers a woman referred to as “Girl Nicky” (Nicky Stewart) and notices massive plot holes in the romantic story of how Rachel and Nicky originally met.

Confrontations and Power Outages Fracture the Couple

Jules corners Nicky in front of Rachel and exposes the timeline of their relationship. He reveals that when Nicky met Rachel at the airport, he had just been dumped by his previous girlfriend. Jules accuses Nicky of being codependent and manufacturing a grand romantic gesture simply because he could not bear to be alone, rather than because they were fated soulmates.

The accusation leads to a physical altercation where Nicky tackles Jules. In the chaos, Rachel collides with a waiter, spilling wine all over herself just as the lodge loses power due to the storm.

Back in their bedroom, a furious argument erupts. Rachel confronts Nicky about fabricating the circumstances of their meeting and lying about why he was in Austin. Nicky dismisses the lies as harmless, failing to understand why Rachel is so upset. To compound her anger, she discovers that Nicky went behind her back to invite her estranged father to the wedding.

The episode ends during a tense, candlelit dinner. Rachel, having changed out of her ruined clothes into a casual t-shirt, stands up and delivers a speech to the gathered guests. Abandoning all pretenses, she openly admits to the existence of the lethal family curse, leaving the room in stunned, confused silence.

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Episode 6 “Last Night of Freedom”

In the sixth episode of Netflix’s horror drama, the day before the wedding arrives with high stakes. Rachel and Nell break into a local government office to research the Harkin family bloodline, leading to a supernatural ritual that leaves one of the Cunningham siblings possessed by an outside force.

Unearthing the Bloody History of the Harkin Line

The episode begins in the immediate aftermath of the disastrous rehearsal dinner. Rachel leaves her engagement ring on the bedside table next to her father’s framed warning note, adding the words “I’m sorry” in red ink. She wakes Nell up in the middle of the night to ask for a favor that would require breaking the law.

Discovering that Rachel is missing from their bedroom, Nicky worries that she has fled with Nell, his ex-girlfriend. To distract his son, Boris takes Nicky out into the snowy woods for a fox-hunting trip, and Jules insists on joining them.

Meanwhile, Rachel and Nell successfully break into the county clerk’s office. Rachel wants to investigate her maternal lineage because she noticed that several of her ancestors actually survived their wedding days. However, her research quickly turns dark. She finds numerous death certificates for Harkin relatives who died on the exact day of their weddings, leading her to theorize that the area acts as a recurring death trap for her bloodline.

Dark Revelations in the Woods and the Records Office

While digging through the files to construct a complete Harkin family tree, Nell makes a shocking discovery. Every single marriage certificate across several generations features the exact same witness signature.

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Recap & Ending Explained

Rachel explains the origin of this impossible detail: the Witness is an immortal man punished by Death to watch every wedding in the Harkin line because he failed to marry his own soulmate over 200 years ago. Seeing this physical proof finally convinces Nell that the lethal family curse is an absolute reality. Fearing for Nicky’s safety, Rachel refuses to flee; if she abandons the wedding, the lethal curse will transfer directly to Nicky and his relatives. Rachel resolves that she must face a 50/50 chance of survival at the altar.

Out in the woods, the hunting trip yields equally grim results. The trio tracks a fox to a trap only to find a severed, bloody leg left behind; the injured animal escaped. During the hike, Jules confronts Nicky and urges him to be completely honest with Rachel to prove he is her fated soulmate. Jules later gives up on the hunt and abruptly announces that he and Nell are getting a divorce.

A Supernatural Ritual Takes a Demonic Turn

Rachel and Nell return to the cabin just as the bachelorette festivities are meant to begin. Portia scolds Rachel for being late but agrees to help her perform a ritual to contact the dead, utilizing the supernatural books previously seen in her bedroom.

Rachel wants to speak with Arlene Harkin, a relative who successfully stayed married for 57 years. Portia leads Rachel and Nell in a homemade Ouija board session. The lights flicker, a sudden fire ignites in the hearth, and an unseen force strikes Portia in the face, causing her nose to bleed. The letters on the board slide on their own to spell out the phrase “Living Dead.”

The night ends in chaos for the Cunninghams. In the woods, Boris confesses to Nicky that his “perfect” marriage to Victoria carries a massive secret. When Nicky later confronts his mother about whether she cheated on his father, she denies the allegation, but the stress causes her to collapse and lose consciousness.

Simultaneously, a high-stress moment between Rachel and Nell leads to a sudden kiss. The moment is violently interrupted when a bloodied Portia appears behind them. Heavily implied to be possessed by the spirit of Arlene Harkin, Portia grabs Rachel by the hair and cryptically mutters a rhyme: “Something living, something dead, something stolen, something red.”

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Episode 7 “Something Living, Something Dead, Something Stolen, Something Red”

In the penultimate episode of Netflix’s horror drama, the wedding day finally arrives. Reeling from the supernatural warnings and family chaos, Rachel performs a desperate, graphic ritual, as outlined by a possessed Portia, to ensure she survives her trip down the aisle.

A Race Against Time and a Comatose Mother

The episode opens in the immediate aftermath of the previous night’s intense cliffhangers. Following her heated argument with Nicky regarding past lies, Victoria remains in a coma at the lodge after suffering severe seizures.

With only one hour remaining before the wedding ceremony is scheduled to begin, the Cunningham family is fractured. Portia aggressively advocates for the wedding to be canceled, claiming that Rachel forced her to summon a demonic entity during the seance. Despite the hostility and the trauma of the previous night, Rachel remains committed to marrying Nicky, citing her love for him and his family.

Rachel pulls Nell aside to reveal a plan derived from Portia’s possessed chanting in the previous episode. She believes that acquiring “something living, something dead, something stolen, something red” and consuming them in a combined potion will magically bind her as Nicky’s true soulmate, guaranteeing her survival.

Graphic Sacrifices and Confronting the Witness

Nell expresses deep concern over the potential supernatural ramifications of such a ritual, but a desperate Rachel is willing to accept any consequence to avoid her mother’s horrific fate. As the immortal Witness and other guests begin to arrive at the lodge for the ceremony, Rachel scrambles to gather the ingredients.

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Recap & Ending Explained

To acquire a piece of “the living,” Rachel confronts The Witness. After sharing a drink, she intentionally breaks the glass to use as a tool. She then sneaks into the comatose Victoria’s room and cuts a lock of the dying woman’s hair to serve as the element of “something dead.” She is briefly interrupted by Boris, whom she unsuccessfully tries to convince not to give Victoria a planned lethal sedative injection.

The ritual requires a physical piece of Rachel herself as “something red.” She turns to Jules to assist her in amputating her own right pinky toe. The amateur surgical procedure is intensely painful, and Rachel’s screams echo through the cabin to the waiting wedding guests. Jules quickly stitches the wound, and a limping Rachel continues her search for the final ingredients.

Final Preparations for a Cursed Ceremony

Limping through the hallways, Rachel discovers she has already been added to the official Cunningham family painted portrait. She picks up a lucky penny from the floor to act as “something stolen” before finally locating Nicky.

To complete the potion with the “seed of the groom,” Rachel initiates an intimate encounter with Nicky. During the act, Nicky admits that the past week’s revelations regarding his family have left him questioning his own identity. Rachel reassures him and confesses that she kissed Nell the night before. Nicky reveals that Jules already told him, but he is not angry.

The episode concludes with a sudden turn of events when Portia interrupts the couple to announce that Victoria has woken up unexpectedly. As Nicky rushes to his mother’s bedside, Rachel scoops his fluid into her glass, combining it with the lucky penny, Victoria’s hair, and her own severed pinky toe.

As the Cunninghams gather to dress Victoria and head to the altar, Rachel stands alone in her room, holding the glass of the disturbing concoction and preparing to walk down the aisle.

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Episode 8 “I Do”

The season finale of Netflix’s horror drama brings the Harkin family curse to a violent, unexpected conclusion. As Rachel and Nicky prepare to exchange vows, a refusal at the altar triggers a massive, supernatural massacre that permanently alters both of their lives.

A Refusal at the Altar Triggers the Clock

The episode opens with the highly anticipated wedding ceremony at the Cunningham lodge. Rachel walks down the aisle to join Nicky. As she reads her handwritten vows, Jules and Nell realize that Rachel chose not to drink the supernatural potion she concocted in the previous episode. She expresses her genuine belief that Nicky is her soulmate, moving him to tears.

When the time comes to exchange rings and finalize the marriage, Nicky hesitates. Influenced by the recent revelations regarding his parents’ flawed marriage, Nicky states that he does not want to go through with the ceremony because he does not want their dynamic to change.

Rachel walks out in a fury. While Nicky believes he is “freeing” them from a flawed societal institution, he fails to understand that not marrying by sundown will trigger the lethal curse Rachel has been trying to avoid.

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Recap & Ending Explained

The Cunningham Lodge Becomes a Bloody Massacre

As the sun begins to set, the situation at the lodge devolves into chaos. Rachel and Nicky engage in a fierce argument in their bedroom, debating the core incompatibilities of their relationship. Nicky remains convinced that the concept of marriage itself is the true problem and dismisses the literal existence of the supernatural curse.

With the deadline only minutes away, Jules and Victoria interrupt the fight and beg the couple to complete the ceremony. Victoria successfully convinces Nicky to move forward, but Rachel refuses to help him.

At sundown, the curse officially triggers. Because the bloodline requirements were not met, the supernatural force attacks the wedding guests and the Cunninghams. Victoria, guests on the dance floor, and Nicky’s sister, Portia, begin to bleed profusely from their noses and eyes. The lodge is quickly covered in blood.

Rachel attempts to flee the building but begins to bleed heavily as well. She collapses and passes out in the snow of the lodge’s central outdoor solarium. Portia dies from the curse’s effects, while young Jude is carried to safety by Jules.

Ending Explained: The New Witness

The morning after the massacre reveals a grim new reality. Jules, Nell, and Jude are among the few survivors of the event, with Jules and Nell realizing they are actual soulmates.

Nicky survives the night and discovers Rachel’s motionless body lying in the snow. Believing her to be dead, he retreats to their bedroom. However, the curse does not allow Rachel to die. Instead, the entity kills the original immortal Witness and transfers the burden of immortality to Rachel.

Rachel awakens in the snow and returns to the lodge. She encounters Jude in the hallway, apologizing for the trauma and warning him to be exceptionally careful about who he chooses to marry in the future. She reveals that she must be present at his future wedding because she is now the new Witness, doomed to watch over every marriage in Nicky’s bloodline.

Finding the phrase “Your Turn” scrawled in blood on a table, Rachel takes money and her mother’s bracelet from the dead body of the previous Witness. She changes into a suit, leaves her engagement ring behind, and drives away from the Cunningham lodge in the Witness’s old truck.

A final supernatural caveat marks her new existence: she is now cursed to listen to The Waterboys’ “We Will Not Be Lovers” on a continuous loop.
