The I Suck at Girls Netflix series is officially in development. Netflix announced a new comedy based on the autobiography by New York Times bestselling author Justin Halpern.

The I Suck at Girls Netflix series will star Kayo Martin, Jeremy Ray Taylor, and Laila Pruitt in the lead roles.

The series is created by Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, who serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers.

  • Laila Pruitt (BMF, Will Trent) as Anna

What the I Suck at Girls Netflix Series Is About

The I Suck at Girls Netflix series draws its premise directly from Halpern’s memoir.

The official logline describes the story as following three awkward high school sophomores who attempt to make sense of dating and identity while growing up.

The characters stumble through the process of understanding relationships, often learning through mistakes and uncomfortable moments.

The series approaches those experiences through a comedic lens tied to the autobiographical source material.

Justin Halpern on Adapting His Story for Television

The Netflix series I Suck at Girls is creatively led by Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, who work together through their company, Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions.

Halpern commented on the project when the series was announced.

“I’m incredibly excited to make a show that can hopefully capture the funny, emotional and oftentimes humiliating experience of growing up. As opposed to just the emotional and humiliating experience of my life as an adult.”

Halpern and Schumacker previously collaborated on projects including Abbott Elementary, Harley Quinn, and Surviving Jack

Netflix Comedy Leadership on the New Series

The I Suck at Girls Netflix series also brings in producers connected to other television comedies.

Bill Lawrence, known for projects including Shrinking, Ted Lasso, and Rooster, joins the project as an executive producer through Doozer Productions.

Other executive producers include Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer for Doozer Productions, along with Chet Dave for Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions.

Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s Vice President of Comedy Series in the United States, commented on the announcement.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Bill Lawrence to bring Justin’s hilariously relatable autobiography, I Suck at Girls, to the screen. They have a rare ability to turn deeply personal, unconventional ideas into culture-defining series that are sharp, funny, and deeply human. This show captures universal truths about life and relationships with authentic heart and humor.”

The series will be produced by Warner Bros. Television.

Halpern and Schumacker’s Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions and Lawrence’s Doozer Productions both hold overall deals with the studio.

The Series Within Netflix’s Expanding Comedy Slate

The I Suck at Girls Netflix series joins a broader slate of comedy projects announced by the streaming service.

Netflix has confirmed several upcoming comedy titles and returning series as part of its lineup.

Among them are:

  • Running Point Season 2
  • The Four Seasons Season 2
  • Nobody Wants This Season 3
  • Tires Season 3

The platform also announced Big Mistakes, a new family crime comedy series from Dan Levy.

Upcoming stand-up specials include performances from Taylor Tomlinson and Derrick Stroup.

Netflix will also host the next Netflix Is a Joke Fest later this year.

Adapting a Memoir for Television

The I Suck at Girls Netflix series takes its structure from Halpern’s autobiographical writing.

The book recounts experiences from his adolescence, focusing on awkward social encounters, romantic misunderstandings, and the uneasy process of figuring out relationships as a teenager.

The television adaptation shifts those experiences into a fictional narrative built around three high school students.
