Inside Episode 2: The Truth Behind ‘Time Transfixed’
The Mystery Behind the Sketch
The second episode opens with an obsessed Benedict Bridgerton. Unable to shake the memory of the masquerade, he is found in his studio attempting to capture the “Lady in Silver” on canvas. A flashback transports us back to the night of the ball, showing the camaraderie of the “downstairs” staff. We see Sophie’s fellow attendants, Irma and Alfie, helping her transform using a vintage gown and a pair of Lady Penwood’s own heels.
In the present, the magic fades quickly. Sophie is back to her grueling maid duties, facing the wrath of Lady Penwood over scuffed heels, the very ones Sophie wore to the ball.

A Cruel Introduction
Through a series of emotional flashbacks, we learn the truth of Sophie’s arrival at the Penwood estate. A young, hopeful Sophie is introduced to her stepmother, Rosamund, and her sister, Posy. While Lady Penwood plays the part of the doting wife for Lord Penwood, her warmth vanishes the moment he leaves the room. When the Lord introduces Sophie not as his daughter, but as his “ward,” the seeds of resentment are sown.

The Hunt Begins
Back in the Ton, Benedict isn’t giving up. He strikes a deal with Eloise: he will protect her from their mother’s matchmaking if she helps him track down the owner of the silver glove. He even enlists Penelope, hoping Lady Whistledown’s reach might smoke out his mystery woman.
As the debutantes of London promenade down Rotten Row, Benedict scans every face. He even encounters Rosamund Penwood, though he quickly realizes she isn’t the woman he met on the terrace.

The Crest Revealed
The breakthrough comes when Violet Bridgerton inspects the mysterious silver glove. She immediately recognizes the Penwood family crest. Prompted by his mother’s discovery, Benedict visits the Penwood estate.
While there, he interviews Posy, but Sophie watches from the shadows, choosing to remain hidden. However, the secret is out; Lady Penwood spots the silver glove in Benedict’s hand as he departs. Realizing Sophie was the intruder at the ball, she ruthlessly fired her and banished her from Mayfair, ensuring she would never work in the high-society circles again.

A Dark History Uncovered
A final, heartbreaking flashback reveals the aftermath of Lord Penwood’s funeral. Lady Penwood informs a grieving Sophie that she has been left out of the will. Here, we learn Sophie’s true origin: she is the illegitimate daughter of Lord Penwood and a maid. To keep the scandal quiet, Lady Penwood forces her into a life of servitude, hiding her true identity from the world.

A Chance Rescue
Exiled from London and desperate for funds, Sophie attempts to sell shoe clips gifted by the kind-hearted Posy, only to find they are fakes. Her luck changes when she finds work at a country social gathering, the same one a brooding, drunken Benedict happens to be attending.
When a group of noblemen harasses Sophie and another maid, Benedict leaps into action. After a physical altercation, he rescues the women, only for them to be fired by the disgruntled aristocrats. Benedict, failing to recognize Sophie without her mask and silver finery, offers the “stranger” a ride to the next town and a promise to find her a new position in London.
