Netflix Acquires Laura Poitras and Mark Obenhaus Documentary Cover-Up

Netflix has acquired Cover-Up, a new investigative documentary from Academy Award® winner Laura Poitras (Citizenfour) and Emmy Award® winner Mark Obenhaus (Steep).

The film, which world premiered at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival and drew acclaim at Telluride and Toronto, is now headed for a global streaming release.

A Political Thriller About Investigative Journalism

Described as both a political thriller and an intimate portrait of a reporter, Cover-Up chronicles the career of Pulitzer Prize–winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh. Known for exposing U.S. military and intelligence abuses over decades, from My Lai to Abu Ghraib, Hersh’s reporting repeatedly challenged institutional secrecy.

The documentary uses Hersh’s personal notes, primary source documents, and rare archival footage to show how major revelations come to light. Poitras and Obenhaus trace patterns of impunity inside military and intelligence agencies, while also showing the relentless, often lonely work behind stories that reshape public understanding.

Poitras and Obenhaus on Bringing Cover-Up to Netflix

In announcing the deal, Laura Poitras said:

“We are deeply proud to join forces with Netflix on the global release of Cover-Up. This is a film I’ve been wanting to make for over two decades, and I’m so grateful that Sy finally relented. It is an honor to introduce younger generations, particularly young journalists, to Sy’s outsider muckraking reporting.”

Co-director Mark Obenhaus added:

Cover-Up is about a remarkable reporter, Seymour Hersh. Through him, the film speaks to the essential role of investigative journalism in holding the powerful accountable. Netflix, with its enormous domestic and global reach, is simply the best platform to release Cover-Up to the audience we think it deserves.”

Hersh himself welcomed the streaming debut:

“I’m excited that Netflix picked up the movie. This is a time when journalism needs all the support it can get.”

Film Festival Acclaim

Before Netflix stepped in, Cover-Up premiered to strong reviews at the Venice International Film Festival 2025 and went on to screen at Telluride and Toronto, where critics praised its unflinching look at press freedom and state secrecy. Upcoming stops include the New York Film Festival and London Film Festival, signaling a full festival circuit run before its streaming release.

Why Cover-Up Matters Now

The film arrives at a moment when journalistic independence and access to information are under scrutiny worldwide. By centering on Seymour Hersh, a reporter famous for exposing uncomfortable truths, Cover-Up examines both the cost and necessity of investigative reporting. With Netflix’s global platform, the documentary could reach younger audiences who may know little about Hersh but are living in an era of renewed press challenges.
