Netflix has revealed that Death by Lightning, its latest prestige limited series, will debut on November 6, 2025.
The four-part drama brings to life the stranger-than-fiction true story of President James Garfield and his assassin, Charles Guiteau.
The title comes from Garfield’s own words: “Assassination can no more be guarded against than death by lightning; it is best not to worry about either.”
The Story Behind Death by Lightning
The series explores the turbulent rise and shocking downfall of America’s 20th president. James Garfield, a reluctant leader, took office in 1881 only to face one of the most dramatic assassinations in U.S. history.
At the center of the story is Charles Guiteau, a delusional admirer whose obsession turned deadly. By weaving together themes of politics, power, and fate, Death by Lightning offers a haunting portrait of ambition colliding with madness.

Why Death by Lightning Stands Out
Unlike typical period dramas, Death by Lightning draws from real letters, speeches, and testimonies to recreate the cultural climate of late 19th-century America. It highlights the fragility of political power and the unexpected ways obsession can change history.
With just four episodes, the series is tightly structured, promising a cinematic experience that avoids filler while capturing the personal and political dimensions of Garfield’s presidency.
