Netflix viewers have a new small-town obsession, and it’s coming from familiar territory.
The show’s debut didn’t just land well; it took over. With 20 episodes total, the first two seasons are now available to binge, and fans of Virgin River will feel right at home.
Both Season 1 and 2 of Sullivan’s Crossing dropped on Netflix U.S. on July 8, and within just a couple of days, the series shot straight to #1 on the Netflix Top 10, overtaking Squid Game Season 3.
Season 3 is set to arrive on Netflix on August 11, 2025.
From the Author of Virgin River
Based on the bestselling novels by Robyn Carr, Sullivan’s Crossing shares literary DNA with Virgin River, Netflix’s longest-running scripted drama. But while Virgin River focuses on northern California, Sullivan’s Crossing trades the redwoods for Nova Scotia’s coast, weaving its own blend of healing, romance, and small-town entanglements.
Both series start with a woman at a crossroads. In Sullivan’s Crossing, that woman is Maggie Sullivan, a high-powered neurosurgeon whose life collapses after her boss is being indicted for billing fraud, and she’s sued for negligence, forcing her to leave Boston and return to the rural town she once called home. There, she reunites with her estranged father and meets Cal Jones, a mysterious newcomer with his own secrets.
Season 2’s dramatic cliffhanger, ending in a fiery explosion at Shannon’s Diner that left Sully’s fate unknown, has left fans eager for more. It’s the kind of setup that Carr’s readers and Virgin River fans know well.
Season 3 doesn’t hold back either, ending with another emotional cliffhanger. (Spoilers ahead if you haven’t finished the two-part finale.)
After surviving the diner fire, Sully not only makes a full recovery, but even finds himself exploring a new romance. Meanwhile, Maggie steps back into the OR to perform a high-risk surgery on Edna Cranebear, all while facing a major career crossroads. Cal, overhearing a conversation about a potential neurosurgery role in Chicago, begins to fear he might be standing in the way of her future. Maggie assures him she’s committed to staying in Timberlake and plans to open a family practice. Just as things seem settled between them, a surprise visitor appears, Liam (Marcus Rosner), who turns out to be Maggie’s husband.
Romantic tension, personal redemption, and community drama are all in the mix, but Sullivan’s Crossing finds its own tone. While Virgin River leans more heavily into romance, Sullivan’s Crossing strikes a different balance, grounding its story in emotional reckoning, complicated family ties, and the weight of past decisions.

Familiar Names Behind the Scenes
The connections don’t stop with the source material. Roma Roth, the executive producer of Virgin River, developed the series. Roth brings her same small-town drama instincts to Sullivan’s Crossing, with a slightly moodier and more adult edge.
Executive producer Christopher E. Perry described the series as “a little bit of everything… from medical drama, to unrequited love, with a little action thrown in as well.”
The show also boasts a high-profile cast:
- Morgan Kohan stars as Maggie Sullivan (“I really connected with the big city/small town pull,” Kohan said in 2023. “I resonated with the ambition that Maggie has, and… a bit of the perfectionism.”)
- Scott Patterson (Gilmore Girls) plays her father, Harry “Sully” Sullivan (“He’s got a heart of gold… but he’s filling a void in ways that aren’t necessarily good,” Patterson said of his character.)
- Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill) rounds out the main cast as Cal Jones (“Cal admires Sully, he sees someone who’s built a home and wants that for himself,” Murray told TVLine.)
Supporting cast includes
- Tom Jackson as Frank Cranebear, Sully’s longtime friend
- Andrea Menard as Edna Cranebear, a grounded and wise presence
- Amalia Williamson
- Dakota Taylor
- Lindura as Sydney Shandon, Maggie’s old friend
- Lauren Hammersley as Connie Boyle
- Lynda Boyd as Phoebe Lancaster, Maggie’s controlling mother and Sully’s ex
- Reid Price as Rob Shandon, Sydney’s brother and the local diner owner
- Peter Outerbridge as Walter Lancaster, Maggie’s wealthy stepfather
- Allan Hawco as Andrew Matthews, Maggie’s boyfriend back in Boston
- Kate Vernon
- Richard Donat as Roy Gunderson, a local battling dementia
Virgin River fans will instantly recognize two familiar faces. Lauren Hammersley, who plays chaotic Charmaine in Virgin River, takes on a more grounded role here as Connie Boyle, a longtime resident of the Crossing. Lynda Boyd, beloved for her role as Lilly until Season 3 of Virgin River, appears as Phoebe Lancaster, Maggie’s strong-willed mother and Sully’s former partner, who traded her dreams for love, only to restart her life in Boston.
With Virgin River gearing up for Season 7 and already renewed for Season 8, Sullivan’s Crossing arrives at the perfect time for fans looking for a familiar but fresh emotional escape.

What’s Next?
Originally airing on Canada’s CTV in 2023, Sullivan’s Crossing steadily built a loyal following. Season 2, which premiered in April 2024, marked a turning point as the series became a Canadian-American co-production with The CW, gaining weekly broadcast exposure in the U.S. alongside its run on CTV. Season 3 continued the pattern, launching in April 2025 on CTV and in May on The CW.
Now, with Netflix adding the first three seasons to its U.S. catalog, Sullivan’s Crossing has found a whole new wave of viewers. Its chart-topping debut shows strong demand, and with that momentum, Netflix could end up playing a bigger role in its future.
Filming on Season 4 is officially set, running from August 7 through November 25, 2025, in Halifax.
For now, 30 episodes are available to stream, and viewers who’ve exhausted Virgin River’s latest season may have just found their next favorite comfort watch.
