Virgin River Season 7 Wraps Filming But Why Is the Cast in Mexico?

From British Columbia to Mexico, new episodes are ready. But when will Netflix release them?

Production on Virgin River Season 7 has officially wrapped, but this time, the final days of filming didn’t take place in Canada. Instead, cast and crew packed up and headed to Mexico, a surprise move that signals something big for the upcoming season. While Netflix is keeping plot details under lock and key, new photos, casting clues, and social sightings are helping paint a picture of what’s next for Mel, Jack, and the rest of the town.

Why Mexico?

After months of filming in British Columbia, the crew quietly shifted operations to Tulum and the Yucatán, specifically to Hacienda Cenote Oxmán, a picturesque estate often used for film shoots. Though Netflix declined to comment, the location was confirmed by local accounts and tourism offices and crew members bold enough to use the #vrs7roadtrip on their social accounts. When the news broke, Alexandra Breckenridge posted on Instagram stories, teasing her followers about their weekend plans while casually posing on a beach in Mexico with a cocktail in hand, subtly hinting at her own location.

So what does a cenote have to do with Virgin River? There’s speculation that this change of scenery could finally deliver the long-awaited honeymoon for Mel and Jack. But another theory, based on past adoption hints, suggests the trip might be tied to a storyline involving international adoption, especially considering the show’s decision in Season 5 to move away from the idea of Mel carrying a biological child. From the photos posted online, it appears that director Felipe Rodriguez is behind the camera for these scenes, which places them in the final block of filming, the last two episodes. Whether this is a romantic escape, an emotional adoption arc, or something else entirely, one question still lingers: is this sequence part of a time jump, or simply a late-season development?

No, We Don’t Need Another Pregnancy Twist

While some fans on Instagram, Facebook, and Reddit have speculated, based on a close-up shot, that Alexandra Breckenridge’s character might be sporting a bump, I’ll refrain from commenting on that kind of detail. Speculation about someone’s body can spiral fast, and in Breckenridge’s case, she’s openly admitted to feeling self-conscious about her appearance, especially on camera. That alone should be reason enough to pause before jumping to conclusions.

That said, I truly hope the show isn’t heading for another pregnancy storyline at this point in the series. After everything that unfolded in Season 5, rehashing that arc would flatten what’s already been a painful, complex, and messy emotional journey. It would risk cheapening the mess the show worked so hard to unpack. If that’s where the writers are going, it feels like a step backward and a loss of narrative direction.

To be clear, I’m reserving judgment until more context is revealed. And it’s worth noting that Breckenridge herself has publicly praised the new creative choices and the direction the show has taken this season. But I hope those choices don’t include recycling old ground just for the shock value or to appease fans who were upset by the miscarriage storyline. Like it or not, that was the story they chose, and this far into the series, it’s time to stand by it. Even if emotional highs and lows like this are realistic in life, compressing that kind of arc into a timeline that skips less than a year between Season 5 and 6 wouldn’t just feel implausible it would be bad writing.

Familiar Faces Return, With New Twists

Season 7 picks up right where Season 6 ended. That means we’ll see the immediate fallout of storylines like Charmaine’s emergency and Doc’s questionable house call. According to casting calls and filming schedules:

  • Charmaine’s twins appear in early episodes, and new scenes were shot near her hair salon, hinting that her arc isn’t over just yet.
  • Lizzie and Denny are expecting, and their baby is likely to arrive mid-season (Episodes 5–6), we will see them again in the last episodes.

  • Lark, despite vanishing with Brady’s money, is confirmed to return.
  • Doc’s medical license may be suspended, prompting the arrival of the Grace Valley Mobile Medical Unit, spotted on set multiple times, but let’s face it, by episode 10 there’s little doubt he’ll be reinstated to practice in Virgin River.
  • Kaj-Erik Eriksen joins the cast as Dr. Hayes, possibly connected to the clinic shakeup.

New Faces, New Stories, and What Exactly Are They Doing at Roland’s House?

As previously announced, Cody Kearsley joins the cast as Clay, a former rodeo rider with a murky past and a missing sister, possibly tied to Marley, who is expected to give birth later in the season. Rehearsals with lasso gear and horseback scenes point to an expanded Western theme, one that feels increasingly out of place in a show like Virgin River.

Civil War reenactment footage, filmed on Roland’s property (Hope’s ex-husband), suggests that this historical spectacle is this year’s version of the annual community event. But here’s the thing: Virgin River was never a Western. With Netflix already pushing multiple ranch-and-cowboy titles through 2025 and into 2026, the heavy focus on boots, horses, and frontier nostalgia feels oddly forced, like a story borrowed from another series entirely.

If Roland’s house is suddenly ground zero for a historical cosplay, the real question is: why are we spending so much time there?

Mel’s Scrubs and a Newborn on Set

On the same day Alexandra Breckenridge was spotted filming in full scrubs, a casting call went out for a newborn baby, a detail that helped confirm what was being shot. It’s likely this scene involves Marley’s labor. Whether this baby becomes part of Mel and Jack’s family is unclear, but fans have theories. It’s equally possible that Marley chooses to keep her baby, continuing the show’s trend of sidestepping neat conclusions.

Season 8 Renewal?

For the second year in a row, Netflix’s silence around Virgin River renewals has been undercut, not by the press or a production source, but by the personal chef of Alexandra Breckenridge, Martin Henderson, and Zibby Allen. Once again, she casually posted on her public Facebook, inviting friends to come up to Vancouver “for the next season.” And just like that, Season 8 is unofficially confirmed, weeks (if not months) ahead of any formal announcement.

What’s worse: this isn’t new. The exact same thing happened last year. At the time, we made a conscious decision not to publish the information immediately, assuming it was a slip-up and choosing instead to protect the chef from potential fallout. But now that it’s happened again, it’s hard not to call it what it is: a pattern. And it makes the streamer’s obsession with secrecy look not just sloppy, but pointless.

Will Virgin River Season 7 Still Arrive in 2025?

Alexandra Breckenridge recently admitted she doesn’t know when Virgin River Season 7 will premiere, but she confirmed one thing: it’s ready. That naturally begs the question, what’s Netflix waiting for?

Given that filming officially wrapped this summer, a late 2025 release would make sense. That would keep the show in line with its usual annual rhythm. But so far, no official date has been announced, and the longer Netflix holds back, the more fans grow impatient. Still, there may be a bigger reason behind the delay.

The reality is, Netflix’s 2025 calendar already looks packed. Some projects, including films, have reportedly shifted to 2026 to make room for the platform’s priority titles, such as Stranger Things returning in multiple parts later this year.

Waiting until early 2026 might give Virgin River the spotlight it deserves, although that could test viewers’ patience even further. On the bright side, there’s always the chance Netflix pulls a surprise: a romantic February release would have made sense. But with what we now know about Bridgerton, February 14 might not be in the cards for Virgin River after all. And no matter how strong or shaky Season 7’s plot turns out to be, some longtime viewers may have already jumped ship. Since Season 5, the show’s ratings have quietly but steadily dipped, and the longer the wait, the more likely it is that some fans won’t still be around when it finally drops.

One thing is clear: the next chapter of Virgin River is finished, and fans are ready.

Whether it’s honeymoons, adoptions, historical cosplay, or unexpected new arrivals, Season 7 seems to be taking bold swings. But without a release date, all the clues and speculation can only carry the excitement so far.

The clock’s ticking. Here’s hoping Netflix doesn’t let the momentum or the audience slip away.
