New Cast Additions
Season 7 introduces two new characters who may shake things up in Virgin River:

Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries) joins the cast as Victoria, a former police officer who now works as an investigator for the state medical board. Her arrival in Virgin River to assess Doc’s practice leads to an unexpected reunion with an old friend, hinting at a potential romantic subplot.
Cody Kearsley (Riverdale, Daybreak) portrays Clay, a rugged and athletic character who draws attention upon entering a room. Clay has experience on the rodeo circuit and grew up in foster care with his younger sister, whom he hasn’t seen since adolescence. He has been searching for her ever since.
The core cast returns with Alexandra Breckenridge, Martin Henderson, Tim Matheson, Annette O’Toole, Colin Lawrence, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Zibby Allen, Sarah Dugdale, Marco Grazzini, Kai Bradbury, and Kandyse McClure all reprising their roles.
While introducing new characters can help freshen a show in its later seasons, adding two new storylines in a 10-episode format raises concerns. Season 6 highlighted the challenge of juggling too many arcs, often resulting in shorter scenes and less character development. Viewers noticed that some series regulars were sidelined last season, leaving characters like Lizzie and Denny with minimal screen time.
Some fans may feel that the new characters are intended to fill the gap left by the departure of Mark Ghanimé as Dr. Cameron Hayek in Season 6. However, it’s worth noting that Ghanimé had very limited screen time and was not a central figure last season.
Virgin River Season 7 Predictions: What’s Next for Mel, Jack & the Rest of the Town?
Austin Nichols Joins Virgin River Cast
One Tree Hill and The Walking Dead alum Austin Nichols has joined Virgin River Season 7. He teased the news on Instagram with a reel set to the show’s theme, captioned, “Just landed in Virgin… I mean Vancouver.” While his role hasn’t been revealed, his timing aligns with the final weeks of filming — suggesting more changes are coming to town.
Matty Finochio joins the cast as a new character named Tony. For now, he’s credited in four episodes of the upcoming season.
Jayce Barriero is also confirmed to return as Roy.
Flashbacks, Familiar Faces, and an Uncertain Future
Callum Kerr is returning to Virgin River, but not in the way some fans had hoped. Rather than taking the lead in Netflix’s much-discussed prequel series, Kerr will reprise his role as a younger Everett in a limited number of flashbacks during Season 7, which is currently filming.
He subtly announced his comeback via Instagram, posting the message “Are we running this back?”a wink to viewers who recognized the reference. While his appearance is confirmed, the return of Jessica Rothe, who portrayed Mel’s mother Sarah, is still up in the air.
Season 7 Will Revisit the Past—With a Purpose
If both Kerr and Rothe return, fans may see the continuation of Everett and Sarah’s backstory, which was partially explored in Season 6. Their past could provide emotional depth or narrative context for current events in Mel and Jack’s relationship, especially as they look ahead to becoming parents.
But even if Everett stands alone in the flashbacks, his decades-long history in the town provides a natural entry point into other characters’ pasts. Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith has hinted at delving deeper into Hope’s earlier years and her marriage to Roland. Everett may serve as a connective thread between Virgin River’s long-standing residents.
The Yellowstone Influence
It’s hard to ignore the increasing Western flavor in Virgin River. Netflix’s upcoming Ransom Canyon, which premieres in April, has been described by Head of Drama Development Jinny Howe as “Virgin River meets Yellowstone.” That comparison may have inspired recent creative decisions in Virgin River.
Season 6 featured Jack galloping with the wind tousling his long hair, a memorable scene where he performed a cowboy striptease and a cowboy-themed bachelorette party.
With Clay’s rodeo background now in play, fans can expect even more Western elements woven into the plot. Whether this is a deliberate move by the writers or a suggestion from Netflix executives, it’s clear the show is adjusting to align with the platform’s evolving content strategy.

Are We Nearing the End?
Recently, Netflix announced a series conclusion as the season began its final production. Considering Season 7, the show posted photos of the cast along with new cast additions. We don’t believe that this is the case for the show.
However, signs suggest the show is heading toward a natural conclusion.
Benjamin Hollingsworth recently shared that showrunner Patrick Sean Smith is already discussing Season 8 storylines. Meanwhile, Alexandra Breckenridge mentioned in a podcast interview with Katee Sackhoff that Netflix is committed to the show’s longevity and that she is under contract through eight seasons.
Still, Netflix may decide to end the series with Season 8, which aligns with the end of the lead actors’ current contracts. Continuing the series would require renegotiations, typically a costly and creatively complex process.
Since Season 4, the show’s ratings have been on a slow decline. Seasons 5 and 6 saw lower viewership numbers, suggesting a struggle to retain and attract audiences.
In 2023, Breckenridge and other producers attributed Season 5’s performance to two major factors: the natural viewer fatigue that occurs after several seasons and the inability of the cast and crew to promote the show due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Season 6, on the other hand, received the most aggressive promotional campaign in the show’s history. From cast interviews and live previews with fans to daily posts on the official Instagram account, the team pulled out all the stops. Unfortunately, these efforts didn’t translate into higher viewership, with ratings dipping even further than in Season 5.
Given the high costs of production and declining audience engagement, Netflix may choose to wrap up Virgin River in a satisfying way before its popularity drops further. This would also free up resources for new projects, such as Ransom Canyon, that aim to capture a similar audience with fresh energy.
Where We Left Off
As we head into Season 7, here’s a recap of where we left things:

Mel & Jack’s Wedding & Adoption Offer: The couple finally got married. Mel’s estranged father, Everett, missed the wedding but made it to the reception to perform a touching song. The following day, Mel’s patient Marley offered them the chance to adopt her baby, rekindling Mel’s dream of motherhood.
Doc’s License Under Review: Doc’s problematic house call has triggered an investigation into his medical license. Grace Valley Hospital also plans to expand into Virgin River, putting his clinic’s future at risk. In Season 6, we met Roland, Hope’s former husband. Season 7 may delve deeper into Hope’s background, especially her relationship with her domineering spouse and the struggles she endured throughout their marriage.
Brady and Lark’s Deception: Brady discovered Lark had been conning him with Jimmy, the father of her child. After hearing him admit he still loved Brie, Lark emptied his bank account and vanished.
Brie’s Love Triangle: Brie admitted to Mike that she cheated on him with Brady. Mike, already aware, added a twist by proposing at Mel and Jack’s wedding.
Preacher & Kaia: Kaia is starting to reconsider her aversion to marriage, potentially changing the dynamic between her and Preacher.
Charmaine’s Disappearance: Charmaine went missing on the day of the wedding. When Jack checked on her, he found her house in disarray, suggesting she may have been taken or fled in distress, leaving her fate uncertain and setting up a suspenseful cliffhanger for the next season
Lizzie & Denny: As Season 6 concludes, Lizzie is now eight months pregnant. Throughout this season, the couple enjoyed minimal on-screen appearances. We can expect the birth of their daughter, presumably at Mel’s renowned birthing center, and likely discover whether the baby girl is affected by Huntington’s disease. The couple has opted to advance their relationship gradually.
Everett Reid: With his bond with Mel and reconciliation with Doc solidified, it would be compelling to see Everett build deeper ties with the community, maybe even a new friendship or romance. Despite Smith dismissing any romantic link to Muriel, we believe they would make an ideal couple.
When is Virgin River coming back?
Fans may be waiting longer than expected all signs point to a 2026 return. While Netflix hasn’t confirmed a date, the delay is real… and the wait might be the longest yet.
The Prequel Spinoff? Don’t Hold Your Breath

In February 2024, it was revealed that Patrick Sean Smith is developing a prequel series focusing on Mel and Jack’s parents, set in the 1970s in Virgin River. Season 6 introduced flashbacks showcasing how Everett and Sarah first met; these roles are played by Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr, who are anticipated to return in the new spinoff. The series is expected to not only delve into their love story but also shed light on the early days of Virgin River, providing a nostalgic perspective on the town’s origins.
During the promotion of season 6 back in December 2024, Smith mentioned that he is still in the process of writing the pilot. As of now, it appears that the pilot remains in progress, although Netflix has not officially greenlit it yet. Despite the undeniable chemistry between Callum Kerr and Jessica Rothe and the significant role of the flashbacks in enhancing viewers’ understanding of Mel’s journey, this does not guarantee that their characters can carry an entire show. The glimpses of Sarah and Everett in Virgin River effectively added depth and context but expanding it into a full prequel might not yield the same resonance. A series focused entirely on Mel’s parents risks feeling detached from the elements that make Virgin River unique.
Given Kerr’s limited involvement in the main show and the radio silence on the spinoff, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the project has either been paused indefinitely or deprioritized altogether.
Season 7 of Virgin River promises fresh faces, deeper emotional stakes, and a possible pivot toward its endgame. With unresolved plotlines, a narrowed episode count, and Netflix’s evolving content strategy, the series is at a crucial crossroads. As we wait for new episodes, one thing is certain: the drama in Virgin River is far from over.
