Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie Begins Production, A New Frontier for a Beloved Classic

Netflix has officially started production on Little House on the Prairie, a bold reimagining of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s enduring novels.

Equal parts family drama, survival tale, and portrait of a country in flux, the series promises to revisit the frontier mythos through a more layered and contemporary lens, without losing the emotional heart that made the books (and the original TV series) such cultural touchstones.

Set against the backdrop of the American West, this adaptation leans into both the hardship and the hope of life on the prairie. It brings to the screen not just the Ingalls family’s journey, but also the intersecting lives of settlers, neighbors, and Indigenous characters, aiming to portray a more expansive, nuanced view of the 19th-century American frontier.

A Cast That Grounds the Story

Leading the cast is Luke Bracey as Charles Ingalls, with Crosby Fitzgerald playing Caroline Ingalls, and Alice Halsey as the spirited Laura. Skywalker Hughes portrays her sister Mary, and Warren Christie joins the ensemble as John Edwards, a familiar character to longtime fans.

The cast also includes:
  • Jocko Sims as Dr. George Tann
  • Meegwun Fairbrother as Mitchell
  • Alyssa Wapanatâhk as White Sun
  • Wren Zhawenim Gotts as Good Eagle
  • Xander Cole as Little Puma

These roles suggest a wider cultural landscape than previous adaptations explored, acknowledging the complexity of frontier life beyond the Ingalls family.

Why Little House Still Matters

Originally published between 1932 and 1943, the Little House books have sold over 73 million copies across 100+ countries and have been translated into at least 27 languages. They’ve remained a fixture in classrooms, family bookshelves, and pop culture for nearly a century. And in 2024, 50 years after the classic TV series debuted, viewers still tuned in, racking up 13.25 billion viewing minutes according to Nielsen.

Netflix’s new version arrives at a time when viewers are once again seeking stories rooted in family, place, and resilience. But this time, the series has the potential to look outward as much as inward, honoring the past while opening space for overlooked narratives.

  1. I really enjoyed the series tremendously and the down to earth characters the actors played. So refreshing to have something all ages can enjoy and great credit to all the actors who did an excellent portrayal.
To know that you enjoyed the location for filming in Manitoba being a Canadian and born in Northern Ontario when times were difficult but people helped one another out. We eventually moved down to Southern Ontario where my parents were originally from but there was something about the North I have not forgotten.
