PRIME TIME: Netflix to Spotlight Deion Sanders in Upcoming Sports Docuseries

From the gridiron to the dugout and now the sidelines, Deion Sanders’ extraordinary career is getting the spotlight it deserves. Netflix is producing a new sports docuseries titled PRIME TIME, offering an unfiltered look into the life and legacy of one of the most electrifying figures in professional sports and one of the most talked-about personalities in college football today.

Currently in production, the three-part series will premiere in 2026 and promises to go beyond Sanders’ highlight reels to explore the man behind the persona. From his record-breaking athletic achievements to deeply personal struggles, PRIME TIME offers a rare glimpse into the highs, lows, and reinventions of a cultural icon.

The Story Behind the Name

In September 1989, Deion Sanders made history by hitting a home run for the New York Yankees and scoring a touchdown for the Atlanta Falcons in the same week the only athlete ever to do so. The moment cemented the nickname he’d carried since high school: “Prime Time.” Today, he goes by Coach Prime, leading the University of Colorado Boulder football team through one of its most visible transformations in decades.

The upcoming Netflix series will trace Sanders’ journey from two-sport stardom to his current role as a coach and motivational figure. Viewers will see how the former NFL and MLB star reshaped his life across multiple arenas from sports to media, and what fuels his ongoing mission to inspire and lead.

Going Beyond the Stats

PRIME TIME won’t just focus on Sanders’ athletic accolades. For the first time, he opens up about intensely personal chapters of his life, including strained family relationships, mental health struggles, and serious health scares that nearly ended his career and his life. This raw, personal insight adds dimension to a man often viewed through a lens of confidence, charisma, and controversy.

“I was PRIME TIME, then just PRIME, and now they call me COACH PRIME,” Sanders told Netflix. “Y’all saw a version of me at each stage, but this is the first time I’m showing DEION every part of him.”

Who’s Behind the Series?

PRIME TIME is being produced by SMAC Entertainment, Skydance Sports, and NFL Films. The executive producers include:

  • Constance Schwartz-Morini and Fred Anthony Smith (SMAC Entertainment)
  • Jesse Sisgold, Jason T. Reed, and Jon Weinbach (Skydance Sports)
  • Jessica Boddy, Keith Cossrow, Ross Ketover, and Ken Rodgers (NFL Films)

Bennett Viseltear will serve as showrunner, with Courtland Bragg and Terrell Riley directing the series.

This project builds on Netflix’s growing lineup of NFL collaborations, joining titles like Quarterback, Receiver, NFL Christmas Gameday, and America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys, which also features Sanders. Skydance Sports is also behind additional upcoming titles for Netflix, including Elway and a docuseries about Rafael Nadal.

The project was announced during the Netflix Upfronts.
