Mr. & Mrs. Christmas Recap: Taylor and Sophie Work Together

Taylor Lewis, played by Brendan Penny, moves to Pineway with his two children just weeks before Christmas. He is divorced, and his ex-wife has recently returned to the UK to care for her elderly parents. His older daughter, Jenna, struggles with her mother’s absence and doesn’t make friends easily at her new school. The Christmas traditions she once enjoyed are also losing their appeal.

A holiday display expert, Taylor, is hired by Paul, the head of community engagement, to revive the town’s Christmas market and parade.

Sophie Shaw, played by Pascale Hutton, works as the town’s accountant. She is organized and knows Pineway well, but Paul questions whether the board will consider her for his position when he leaves for a promotion. Her experience is in accounting, and she needs a chance to show what else she can do. He suggests she work closely with Taylor on the Christmas celebrations.

They don’t agree on everything. Sophie spots a fire exit blocked by Taylor’s market layout and needs him to stay within budget. Still, they work well together, and Taylor begins talking to her about his difficulties with Jenna.

Taylor Changes the Market to Impress Jenna

At home, Taylor’s attempt to create Christmas magic involves so many lights and inflatables that he knocks out the power to the neighborhood. Jenna remains unimpressed.

Sophie, a widow with a daughter named Lily, understands that children’s interests change. She tells Taylor that their traditions may need to change too. He feels lost as Jenna becomes a teenager and worries she won’t enjoy the Christmas market.

Without consulting Sophie, he replaces some of the vendors they originally chose, hoping to make the event more appealing to Jenna.

Sophie has her own preparations underway. She gives Paul a proposal explaining why she deserves the promotion, but he finds it too dry. The figures show she can handle the practical work, yet the board also wants to hear her ideas for the community. He encourages her to give the presentation more personality.

Opening night makes her job harder. Some of the children enjoy Taylor’s changes, but much of the community misses the traditional market. There is no hot cocoa or caroling, and the music is too loud. Sophie faces criticism for failing to oversee the event, until Taylor takes responsibility.

A Carnival Gives Them Another Chance

Taylor and Sophie propose keeping the traditional market while creating a separate space for teenagers at the old carnival grounds. There will be rides and games, with the Christmas parade ending at the carnival to bring the two events together. The board agrees, provided they stay within budget, and puts Sophie in charge.

Taylor apologizes for changing the vendors without telling her. She understands that he wants to help Jenna, but suggests he give his daughter some space and do something for himself. She invites him to dinner and offers to show him around town.

Before the date, Jenna tells her father he doesn’t always have to be perfect. She wants him to be himself, including when things go wrong at the market.

Over dinner, Taylor and Sophie talk more openly about their lives. He encourages her to tell the board what she loves about Pineway, and she explains what the Christmas market means to her.

After her husband died, money was tight, and she worked a lot. She feels guilty that Christmas took a backseat, but taking Lily to the market gave her daughter somewhere magical to go. Lily thought it was the North Pole. Looking back, Sophie realizes the experience might have meant more to her daughter than she understood at the time.

Taylor and Sophie nearly kiss, but a vendor interrupts them with a holiday trinket; he gifts her a keychain.

Sophie Finds Her Story, but Taylor Gets the Budget Wrong

For her next presentation, Sophie uses photographs of Lily as a child, along with prints and collages, to explain her connection to Pineway. She knows firsthand how the department’s work helps families because she and her daughter benefit from it. She wants the opportunity to give something back.

Taylor makes another attempt to surprise Jenna by hiring Clover, a band she used to love, to perform at the carnival. The band dedicates a song to her from her father, putting her under a spotlight in front of everyone.

Jenna is mortified. She liked the band years earlier, and being singled out makes everything worse. She runs off and tells Taylor she needs room to figure things out. She doesn’t need him to fix everything for her.

The booking also exposes a serious mistake. Taylor works from the annual events budget instead of the Christmas budget and spends far more than they have available. Sophie questions why he isn’t clearer when he asks her about the money.

The board cancels the parade and uses money from the following year to cover the overspending. Sophie believes she has lost her chance at the promotion. She returns Taylor’s keychain.

The Town Brings the Parade Back

Taylor arranges to meet Sophie over lunch and apologizes. He still wants to find a way to save the parade, although the performers booked as Mr. and Mrs. Claus have already accepted another job.

Their conversation gives Sophie an idea. Pineway helps families like hers, and other people in town may welcome the chance to contribute.

On the night the canceled parade is supposed to take place, it goes ahead with help from the community. The school provides the marching band, and people donate their services. Taylor and Sophie take the roles of Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The volunteers also want to keep helping in future years so the Christmas event can continue.

Taylor apologizes to the board and promises to do better. Paul is willing to work with him again and mentions Valentine’s Day and Halloween. He also promotes Sophie to regional manager.

Jenna and Taylor make peace. She is growing up, but she will always be his little girl.

Later, Taylor finds Sophie standing under the mistletoe and gives her back the keychain. They kiss, then ride the Ferris wheel together, where they continue kissing.
