Prime Video’s Love of Your Life gives Maya the relationship she never thought she needed, then takes it away just as she starts imagining a future around it. After Charlie’s death, Maya spends years running from her grief until new relationships force her to face what she left behind.
This Love of Your Life recap and ending explanation follows Maya through Charlie’s death, her relationship with Felix, and the people she leaves behind, then explains what the final cassette scene means.
How Do Maya and Charlie Fall in Love?
Maya is an ER nurse in Boston whose life mostly revolves around work when she meets Charlie while buying a table from him. He is working toward his PhD, much more outgoing than she is, and interested enough to ask her out before she leaves.
Back home, Maya discovers a cassette inside a stuck drawer. The music catches her attention, and on their first date she learns that Charlie made the tape by splicing together part of an old recording. It plays on a loop, but it won’t stay exactly the same forever. Each play slowly wears away the material on the tape until, one day, the music will be reduced almost entirely to white noise.
The two start seeing each other, and Maya learns that Charlie was adopted when he was six months old. Her own childhood was very different. She grew up without her father and never had the kind of close relationship with her mother that Charlie has with his family.
Maya does have Jason. They have been best friends since college and even briefly tried dating before deciding they were much better as friends. Charlie has no problem with their history and quickly gets along with him.
Meeting Charlie’s family intimidates Maya more. She initially tries to avoid the visit, admitting that she has no idea how to behave around a close family. Once she gets there, she sees just how loved Charlie is. His mother Ruth welcomes her, although Maya later learns that Ruth has some reservations about how quickly the relationship is moving.
During the visit, Maya and Charlie tell each other they love one another for the first time.
They’ve been together for only about six months when Charlie’s 30th birthday arrives. His family thinks they are coming to celebrate his birthday. Instead, Maya and Charlie surprise everyone by getting married.
Jason gives a speech at the wedding, while Ruth is caught off guard by the decision. She loves her son and wants him to be happy, but learning about his wedding as it is happening leaves her feeling pushed out of an important part of his life.
Maya, meanwhile, has gone from questioning whether she needs romantic love at all to building her future around Charlie.
What Happens to Charlie in Love of Your Life?
Their married life changes when COVID reaches Boston, and Maya’s hospital fills with patients.
Working in the ER puts her in constant contact with the virus. She worries about bringing it home, particularly because Charlie has asthma, and asks him to stay with Ruth. Charlie chooses to remain with his wife.
During this period, the couple starts talking about what they will do when the pandemic ends. They want to travel, and Charlie starts putting together a list of places and experiences. Their conversations also turn to children. Maya had once been uncertain about motherhood, but she can now imagine having a family with him. Then they both become sick.
Maya monitors Charlie at home until his oxygen level falls far enough that she knows he needs hospital care. An ambulance takes him away, but she cannot ride with him because she is infected too.
His condition deteriorates quickly. The hospital is overwhelmed, and Charlie has to be intubated. Maya is unable to be at his bedside and instead sees him through a video call as she tries to remind him of everything they are supposed to have together. Charlie dies in the hospital.
Maya returns home and shuts down. Ruth repeatedly tries to reach her before eventually coming to the apartment herself, desperate to know what has happened and what she is supposed to do next. Maya cannot bring herself to open the door.
Ruth’s grief turns into anger. She blames Maya for Charlie becoming sick and calls her a coward for refusing to face her. Already blaming herself, Maya takes those words with her when she leaves.

Why Does Maya Leave Boston?
Instead of grieving with the people who also loved Charlie, Maya removes herself from their lives.
She packs what she needs into two suitcases and leaves Charlie’s phone, keys, and birth certificate for Jason. Someone else handles the rest of the apartment. Maya gets rid of her phone and leaves the country without telling the people closest to her where she is going.
Years later, she lives in Lisbon and works remotely as a telehealth nurse. She is also seeing a grief therapist, although physically leaving Boston has not done much to separate her from what happened there.
Her life changes after she meets Felix at a bar. Her nursing instincts take over when he burns his hand, and their conversation continues long after they’ve dealt with the immediate problem.
Felix knows something about grief himself. He lost his younger brother, Leon, and that shared experience allows Maya to talk openly about Charlie without having to pretend that she has moved past him.
She also starts making other small changes. A dance class introduces her to Beatrice, who encourages her to stop choosing unhappiness and become more involved in the life happening around her. Felix eventually invites Maya to join him on a trip to the Algarve before he returns to London; she agrees to go with him.

Why Does Maya Break Up With Felix?
Maya and Felix grow closer during their time together, and she learns more about his daughter, Noelle, whom he co-parents with his former partner Anna.
Talking to Felix about children brings Maya back to the future she lost with Charlie. She now wishes they could have had a child together, something she couldn’t have imagined wanting when she and Charlie first met.
Felix invites her into his life in London, but that also brings Maya face-to-face with someone from hers. While she is at a restaurant with Felix, Jason unexpectedly sees her.
He is thrilled to find her until Maya reduces their relationship to that of old friends from Boston. Jason immediately pushes back. They spent years celebrating Thanksgiving together, and he stood up at her wedding. To him, they were family.
The confrontation forces Maya to explain to Felix exactly how completely she disappeared after Charlie died. She admits that she expected Charlie’s family to hate her and believed they would blame her for bringing the virus home.
Felix does not walk away after hearing any of it. He wants to see what their relationship could become and doesn’t see loving Charlie as something that prevents Maya from loving someone else. For a while, she allows herself to try.
Maya meets Noelle and later attends her birthday, where she also spends time with Anna. Seeing the family Felix has built with his daughter brings Maya’s fear back to the surface.
When she asks Felix whether he worries about something happening to Noelle, he admits that he does. Loving someone means risking losing them.
That is exactly what Maya cannot handle.
Her feelings for Felix are no longer casual. She cares about him and is becoming attached to his daughter, too. Rather than accept how vulnerable that makes her, she ends the relationship.
Felix sees the contradiction in what she is doing. Maya keeps insisting that she wants distance, yet she repeatedly seeks connection. He cannot make the decision for her, so he lets her leave.

Does Maya Get Back Together With Felix?
After the breakup, Maya continues therapy and finally allows herself to return to the memory she has spent years avoiding: Ruth outside the apartment after Charlie died.
She remembers Ruth begging her to come downstairs and tell her what happened to her son. When Maya stayed inside, Ruth’s desperation turned into accusations that convinced Maya to run.
Eventually, Maya realizes that leaving Felix was another version of the same response. She goes back to him and says she does not want to give up on their relationship. She has waited too long.
Felix tells her that he and Anna have gotten back together. He does not dismiss what happened between him and Maya, though. Their relationship was real, even if it didn’t become permanent.
For Maya, simply returning was very important. She has spent years leaving whenever a relationship becomes frightening. This time, she comes back and accepts that the person she wants may no longer be waiting for her.
Next, she returns to someone else she abandoned.

What Happens When Maya Reunites With Jason?
Maya travels to the United States for a nursing conference and contacts Jason.
Their first meeting is awkward, but Maya finally apologizes for what he never received. She explains that after Charlie’s death, pain turned into shame, and she responded by destroying the other relationships in her life before they could hurt her too.
Jason has changed during their years apart. He no longer drinks, has become vegan, and is interested in sustainable communal housing. Maya has changed too. She now lives in Luxembourg, grows vegetables, and even knows her neighbors.
One thing between them has not changed. Jason is still her friend.
They can also finally talk about Charlie. Maya no longer needs everyone around her to avoid his name, and she can remember him with someone who knew him too.
Together, Maya and Jason take a swamp tour, one of the experiences that had been on the list she made with Charlie. Being there brings back the life she could have had with her husband, including the children they might have raised together. Maya does not run from the memory.
At the airport, Jason jokes about how many years might pass before they see each other again. Maya suggests Thanksgiving instead, returning to the tradition they shared long before Charlie entered either of their lives.
She still has one relationship to repair.

What Does Ruth Tell Maya About Charlie?
Maya returns to the seaside home where she once met Charlie’s family and finally faces Ruth.
She asks what happened after she disappeared, and the answer makes the consequences of leaving much harder to ignore.
Because Maya was Charlie’s next of kin, his family could not immediately claim his body after she vanished. Ruth tells her that Charlie remained in a refrigerated truck for two weeks. She then had to arrange her son’s funeral without Maya and discovered that she did not even know what music Charlie would have wanted. His wife would have known. Maya apologizes for abandoning them.
Ruth apologizes too. She knows the things she screamed outside Maya’s apartment were cruel and came from her own grief. Their conversation also finally addresses the tension that existed before Charlie died. Ruth admits that Maya’s discomfort around the family initially bothered her, and then the speed of her relationship with Charlie created another problem. The surprise wedding made Ruth feel rejected by her son. Maya tells Ruth that she loved her.
Ruth gives Maya an idea that finally helps her see her life differently. Grief has no clear ending, but neither does love. She cannot know what her life will look like decades from now. She can only stay in love with it while she is living it.
When Charlie’s father returns with the family dog, Wilma immediately recognizes Maya. The reunion overwhelms her; this time, she stays.

Love of Your Life Ending Explained: What Does the Cassette Mean?
The final scene returns to the cassette that first brought Maya and Charlie together.
Charlie told her the recording would wear away each time she played it. Eventually, the music would disappear into white noise. By the end of the movie, that has finally happened.
The moment connects with something else Charlie once taught Maya. In a crowded room, he had asked her to close her eyes and listen carefully to the individual sounds around her. In the final scene, as the recording fades, Maya hears the world again: children, birds, and the waves around her.
The tape wearing out does not erase Charlie. Ruth has just helped Maya accept that grief and love can continue without requiring her life to stop with them.
Maya also does not end the movie with Felix or Jason. Felix is back with Anna, while Jason remains the close friend he was before Charlie’s death. No one replaces Charlie at the end of the story. Instead, Maya is finally present in her own life again.
The cassette can no longer preserve Charlie’s music exactly as it once sounded, but Maya does not need it to keep him with her. She can remember what they had while letting herself hear everything still happening around her.
