Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ Trailer Takes Us Back to the Creation of Narnia

Netflix has released the official trailer for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, giving us our first full look at Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of C. S. Lewis’ origin story. The film will be released worldwide in IMAX and theaters on February 12, 2027, with special IMAX sneak previews beginning two days earlier on February 10.

Gerwig wrote the screenplay and directs the film, which marks the first time The Magician’s Nephew has been adapted for the screen. Netflix has also released teaser art and a title treatment alongside the trailer.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew Takes Us Back to the Beginning

First published in 1955, The Magician’s Nephew tells the story of the creation of Narnia and explains how travel between our world and C. S. Lewis’ magical realm began. Its story leads into the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

For Gerwig, the connection to this particular Narnia book goes back to childhood.

“I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life,” Gerwig said in a statement accompanying the film’s new trailer.

She added that she didn’t yet know she would become a filmmaker, but “a universe built out of music is an idea that has always lived in my heart.”

“Because of C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure,” Gerwig continued. “I believed that anywhere could be enchanted, and that anyone could be swept up into an epic.”

The C. S. Lewis Company also praised Gerwig’s approach to the material, saying it was “incredibly moving to see how deeply Greta Gerwig has embraced C. S. Lewis’s world.”

Who Is in The Magician’s Nephew Cast?

David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell star alongside Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan and Ciarán Hinds, with Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep also among the cast.

Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma round out the announced ensemble.

The film is produced by Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, Vincent Sieber-Smith and Gerwig. Patricia Whitcher, Racheline Benveniste and Christine Crais serve as executive producers, alongside Douglas Gresham and Melvin Adams for the C. S. Lewis Estate.

Gresham’s involvement gives the film another direct connection to Lewis. In a statement from the Gresham family, they said they had seen Gerwig’s enthusiasm for the books during their conversations with her and while visiting the film’s London set.

“Our vision is for this movie to be enormously successful and for this calibre of talent to be applied to all of the Chronicles of Narnia,” the family said.
