JustWatch has spent more than a decade helping people figure out where to stream movies and shows. Now, the streaming guide is becoming a streaming service itself.
JustWatch TV will launch in October across 12 markets, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy and Australia. The new service will be built directly into JustWatch’s existing website and apps, allowing users to move from searching for something to watching available titles without switching platforms or creating another account.
The company announced JustWatch TV on September 15 at TIFF: The Market, the Toronto International Film Festival’s content marketplace.
How Will JustWatch TV Work?
JustWatch TV will combine several ways of watching under one service.
There will be free ad-supported streaming, transactional rentals, and an ad-free subscription option. JustWatch describes the catalog as including new movies through PVOD and TVOD, a free AVOD library, and a growing selection of ad-free movies and TV shows.
Pricing has not yet been announced.
The service will be integrated directly into the existing JustWatch website and apps and made available to all existing JustWatch users in its launch markets.
That gives the company a substantial existing audience to start with. JustWatch says its streaming guide has more than 50 million monthly users across 140 markets, tracking where to watch more than 500,000 movies and TV shows across over 1,500 streaming services.
JustWatch Is Using Its Own Search Data to Build the Catalog
JustWatch also has something most new streaming services don’t start with: more than a decade of data showing what people are actively trying to watch.
The company says it will use that demand data and consumer insights to build the JustWatch TV catalog around what its audience wants, including harder-to-find titles.
“For over a decade, our mission has been to connect fans with their favorite films and shows, particularly the hard-to-find and previously unavailable titles,” JustWatch Group founder and CEO David Croyé said in the announcement. “With the launch of JustWatch TV, we aim to make content discovery, access and engagement even easier.”
JustWatch also said users will be able to request titles directly, giving them another way to signal what they want added to the service.
JustWatch TV’s arrival won’t mean the streaming guide stops directing viewers elsewhere. The company says users will still be able to discover where titles are available on other streaming services alongside the movies and shows they can watch directly through JustWatch.
Quentin Carbonell, JustWatch’s SVP of Global Content Acquisitions and Strategy, said the service will include “film and TV hits and hard-to-find gems” that users can watch for free or rent on JustWatch while continuing to direct them toward titles available elsewhere.
Paramount and New Regency Are Among the Launch Partners
JustWatch has already announced several content partners ahead of the October launch.
Paramount, New Regency, Fremantle, Bleecker Street and Vortex Media are among the companies involved in the launch slate, with additional partners still to be announced.
A complete list of movies and shows available when JustWatch TV launches has not yet been revealed.
