HBO has ordered The Spread, a new original drama series starring Javier Bardem. The Academy Award winner will also executive produce the Miami-set series, which comes from writers Bill Dubuque and Sean Sansiveri.
Matthew Vaughn, whose credits include Kingsman and Layer Cake, will direct and executive produce the series. The Spread is a co-production between HBO and FIFTH SEASON TV Studio.
What Is HBO’s The Spread About?
The Spread dives into the world of extreme wealth and finance as Miami grows into what the series calls “Wall Street South.”
At the center of the story is a billionaire who surrounds himself with ambitious and talented people before turning them loose on the markets that power America. His larger goal is to shift the country’s economic center toward Miami, with the city’s hedge funds, nightlife and enormous wealth forming the backdrop to the story.
HBO has confirmed Bardem as the star but has not yet provided the name or a full character description for his role.
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Films, said the network had wanted to set a scripted series in Florida for some time.
“Having long wanted to set a scripted series in Florida, HBO couldn’t be more excited to explore the gilded chaos of Miami.”
The Spread Brings Together Javier Bardem, Matthew Vaughn and Bill Dubuque
Bardem comes to The Spread as both its lead and one of its executive producers. His recent television work includes Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and HBO’s Cape Fear.
Bill Dubuque, whose credits include Ozark and His & Hers, writes and executive produces The Spread alongside Sean Sansiveri.
Vaughn will direct and executive produce. Brad Weston executive produces for Makeready, while Ian Stratford and Michael Bloom serve as executive producers for Topic Studios.
HBO has not announced additional cast members, an episode count, or production dates for The Spread.
