Oh Mary! Is Coming to HBO and HBO Max in 2027

HBO is bringing Oh, Mary! to television in 2027. A filmed version of Cole Escola’s Tony Award- and Olivier Award-winning play will debut on HBO and stream on HBO Max, featuring Escola and the cast of the show’s West End production.

The special was filmed during the July 28, 2026 performance at London’s Trafalgar Theatre. Sam Pinkleton, who directed the original Broadway production, also directs the filmed version.

Escola stars as Mary Todd Lincoln alongside Giles Terera as Mary’s Husband, Bianca Leigh as Mary’s Chaperone, Tony Macht as Mary’s Husband’s Assistant and Michael Urie as Mary’s Teacher. All five are reprising their roles from the West End production.

Written by Escola, Oh, Mary! is an 80-minute, one-act dark comedy that reimagines Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Its version of Mary is miserable, frustrated and consumed by desires that have little to do with the history most people know.

“I’m so happy to share this show with a wider audience and spread OH, MARY! awareness,” Escola said in HBO’s announcement. “Knowing about OH, MARY! is the first step in getting rid of it.”

Pinkleton also pointed to filmed theater as part of what first made him love the medium. He recalled repeatedly watching VHS recordings of Cats and Into the Woods as a child and said he was “giddy” that Escola’s performance would now be preserved for television audiences.

Oh, Mary! Has Gone From Off Broadway to HBO

Oh, Mary! began Off Broadway in January 2024 before moving to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre that July. According to HBO, it became the first production in the theater’s 121-year history to gross more than $1 million in a single week and went on to break its own box-office record 15 times.

The play made its West End debut in December 2025. The HBO version captures that London production rather than staging a new adaptation specifically for television.

A North American tour is also set to begin in September 2026.

HBO has announced only a 2027 release window for the filmed production, so a specific premiere date has not yet been revealed.
