Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story turns the anthology’s attention to one of America’s most infamous murder cases, with the new season centered on Lizzie Borden and the events surrounding the killings that made her name part of popular culture.
The official synopsis describes Lizzie as the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family who, along with her rebellious maid, is trapped in a home shaped by humiliation and cruelty. The two escape into a fantasy of sex, power and revenge before a series of gruesome murders shocks the world.
The murders remain unsolved, but the case turned Borden into a figure whose story has been retold for more than a century.
Beatty said the season is interested in more than simply recreating the crimes.
“The show is exploring a legacy of female rage and reaction to the set of circumstances that they are presented with.”
Beatty also explained that the questions behind the previous Monster installments remain part of the new season.
“Every season of Monster has been an exercise in understanding the person’s psychology… Are they born or are they made?”
According to Beatty, Murphy and Brennan were interested in examining “what brings a woman to the point of violence.”
