The Diplomat Season 4 Puts Two Marriages at the Center of the Story
Season 4 picks up with the fragile peace Kate brokered between the United States and the United Kingdom under threat after what Netflix describes as a “catastrophic moment.”
At the same time, Kate is still trying to hold her marriage to Hal together. That was complicated enough before Hal became vice president. Now his growing alliance with President Grace Penn is creating an entirely different problem.
Grace and Hal are involved in a plan to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon, with their actions pushing the United States closer to war.
That leaves Kate in an unexpected position. She joins forces with Todd Penn, Grace’s husband, as the two try to stop Grace and Hal and prevent their alliance from upsetting the balance of power in the US and abroad.
So while the international stakes remain very much part of The Diplomat, Season 4 is also narrowing its focus to Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd, and the increasingly messy relationships among them.
Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn described those four characters as the foundation of the season in a statement:
“This season is built on the foursome that is Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd,” Cahn said. “They’re two couples strapped together in one car on a crumbling roller coaster.”
Cahn also explained that each character’s public position is making their private life increasingly difficult. As Grace and Hal grow closer professionally, Kate and Todd form an alliance of their own.

Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford Return
Keri Russell returns as US Ambassador Kate Wyler, with Rufus Sewell once again playing Hal, now serving as vice president.
Allison Janney is back as President Grace Penn, while Bradley Whitford returns as Todd Penn. The two joined the series after its original focus on Kate and Hal expanded further into the White House.
Season 4 also brings back Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn, Nana Mensah and Rory Kinnear.
Debora Cahn remains creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Janice Williams, Keri Russell, Alex Graves, Peter Noah and Eli Attie also serve as executive producers.
