Netflix has released the official trailer for A Different World, giving us our best look yet at the new generation heading to Hillman College. The 10-episode sequel series premieres September 24, 2026, with Maleah Joi Moon leading the cast as Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne.
And while this is a new class with its own characters and stories, Netflix isn’t cutting ties with the original. Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell are among the familiar faces returning to Hillman.

The A Different World Netflix trailer introduces Deborah Wayne
At the center of the new series is Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon. Deborah arrives at Hillman as the lovingly sheltered youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, but the series isn’t simply sending her to her parents’ old college to repeat their story.
Netflix describes Deborah as a free spirit with a flair for the spotlight, still trying to figure out her own path. That puts her parents’ history with Hillman in the background while giving the new series a way to build around someone who already has a connection to the original.
Deborah won’t be doing it alone. The new class also includes Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), a first-generation criminal justice major, and Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a five-star athlete who chooses Hillman because of its legacy.
Jordan Aaron Hall plays Amir Rodale, a psychology major who is apparently much better at dealing with other people’s problems than his own. Kennedi Reece plays Hazel Henry, a small-town student raised in the church who begins to define her own values, while Chibuikem Uche plays Kojo Achebe, a Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur trying to find the confidence to follow his own vision.
Together, the six characters make up the main new group at Hillman.
Whitley, Dwayne, Freddie, and Ron are coming back
The connection to the original A Different World goes well beyond Deborah being Whitley and Dwayne’s daughter.
Jasmine Guy returns as Whitley Gilbert, with Kadeem Hardison back as Dwayne Wayne. Cree Summer reprises her role as Freddie Brooks, while Darryl M. Bell returns as Ron Johnson.
Their presence gives the sequel a direct link to the original series without making them the center of the new story. Deborah and her classmates are the leads this time, with Hillman once again serving as the place where a group of young adults starts working out who they want to be.
The original A Different World ran for six seasons from 1987 to 1993 and followed students at the fictional historically Black Hillman College. The new series keeps that setting, with Netflix describing the sequel as a dramedy centered on the experiences of a new generation of Black college students.
