Netflix may have presented My Brilliant Career as a limited series, but Sybylla Melvyn’s story doesn’t have to end after those six episodes. Miles Franklin actually wrote another novel about her.
Its limited-series status doesn’t completely rule it out, either. Netflix has extended limited series before when there was enough reason to keep going, although that remains the exception rather than the rule.
There has been no announcement of My Brilliant Career Season 2 from Netflix, and only a few days have passed since the series arrived on August 13. So we’re getting well ahead of ourselves here. But if the show finds an audience big enough to make Netflix reconsider that limited-series status, the writers wouldn’t have to invent Sybylla’s next chapter from nothing. Franklin already did it.
And considering where the Netflix adaptation leaves Sybylla, the second book could make considerably more sense as a continuation than you might expect.
Is My Brilliant Career Season 2 Happening?
There is currently no confirmation that My Brilliant Career will return for Season 2.
Netflix originally commissioned the adaptation as a six-episode series, with Liz Doran developing and writing the show and Jungle Entertainment producing. Netflix’s own material describes it simply as a series adaptation of Franklin’s novel, and no second installment has been announced.
The series only premiered globally on August 13, 2026, so it is also far too early to know what Netflix will ultimately decide.
Still, “limited series” doesn’t automatically make another season impossible if Netflix sees a reason to continue. And in this particular case, there is already a second book ready to be adapted: Miles Franklin wrote a direct sequel.
What Is the Second My Brilliant Career Book?
Franklin followed My Brilliant Career, first published in 1901, with My Career Goes Bung: Purporting to be the Autobiography of Sybylla Penelope Melvyn.
Franklin began writing it almost immediately after finishing the first book.
The sequel was written in the early 1900s, generally dated to around 1902–1904, under the working title The End of My Career. Franklin’s biographer, Jill Roe, has said that the manuscript was substantially revised before it reached readers. It was rejected, disappeared for years, resurfaced, and was reworked before finally being published in 1946.
That means readers had to wait 45 years after My Brilliant Career to get Sybylla’s next book, even though Franklin had started writing it when the first novel was still very new. Sybylla is still the central character.
What Happens in My Career Goes Bung?
This is where a possible second season gets interesting.
My Career Goes Bung continues with Sybylla still in her late teens, but Franklin does something much stranger than simply writing another romance or sending her heroine on another country adventure: Sybylla becomes a published author.
Sybylla initially tries to write a conventional romantic novel set in England. Her schoolmaster encourages her to stop imitating other writers and use the Australian life she actually knows instead. She does; the resulting novel is published in England, and suddenly everyone believes they recognize themselves in it.
Franklin was playing with her own experience. My Brilliant Career had been treated as autobiographical despite Franklin presenting it as fiction. My Career Goes Bung turns that experience back into fiction, with Sybylla dealing with people who insist that her characters are based on them and reacting to what she has written.
The result is a much more self-aware book about becoming a writer, being talked about, entering literary society, and discovering that getting published creates an entirely new set of problems.
Sybylla also moves into Sydney’s literary and social circles, which would give a second season a new, interesting, and different setting.
The Netflix Ending Has Already Put Sybylla in the Right Place
Netflix’s My Brilliant Career doesn’t end with Sybylla simply rejecting Harry and returning to the same life she had before. She becomes a writer.
After Lucy encourages her to stop trying to produce the kind of story other people expect from her, Sybylla writes about her own experiences. She completes the manuscript and, in the final moments of the series, gets on a train and heads for the city.
We don’t find out whether the manuscript is published; that unanswered part of the ending could become the opening of My Career Goes Bung.
A second season could follow Sybylla as she tries to get her work published, experiences the attention that follows, and enters the Sydney literary world. It would allow the second season to focus on what happens after you choose writing over love.
And Yes, Harry Could Still Be Part of It
Anyone who finished the Netflix series heartbroken over Sybylla and Harry shouldn’t assume the second book simply forgets about him either.
Harry Beecham’s literary counterpart, Harold Beecham, remains connected to Sybylla’s story.
There is even a strange piece of history behind the sequel that feels particularly relevant after watching the Netflix adaptation. According to the State Library of New South Wales, one of Franklin’s revisions in the 1930s actually had Sybylla relent and marry Harold, settling with him at Five Bob Downs. Franklin ultimately changed course again, and that isn’t how the published version ends.
So even Franklin apparently spent some time reconsidering the question she had left hanging between these two characters.
That doesn’t mean Netflix would or should marry Sybylla and Harry in a hypothetical second season. The series made Sybylla’s decision not to marry central to its ending, and immediately undoing it would risk weakening everything that season 1 accomplished.
But Christopher Chung has already said he would be interested in exploring what Harry does after Sybylla rejects his proposal, even though there are currently no plans for a continuation.
Between that and the second novel, there is room to keep Harry in Sybylla’s world without turning Season 2 into six episodes devoted to reversing her decision.
A Second Season Wouldn’t Have to Adapt the Book Exactly
Of course, having another book doesn’t mean a second season would need to follow it page by page. Season 1 certainly didn’t do that with My Brilliant Career.
Sybylla’s story and the choices she faces are still at the center, but the series also gives us much more of the people around her. Nell, Betty, Helen, Augusta and Julius all have stories of their own, and not all of them feel finished by the finale.
Helen and Augusta are already heading to Sydney, which is where Sybylla’s life takes her next in My Career Goes Bung. Nell and Charlie have left Caddagat, too, while Betty prepares to raise her child without Baker. Then there is Julius, who is still at Caddagat after giving Jim the foreman’s job to keep his relationship with Everard secret.
So even if a second season took most of Sybylla’s story from My Career Goes Bung, it wouldn’t have to leave everyone else behind. The first season has already changed and added enough that the series could continue those stories alongside whatever comes next for Sybylla as a writer.
So, Could My Brilliant Career Actually Return for Season 2?
Right now, My Brilliant Career Season 2 is a possibility to talk about, not a season Netflix has ordered.
The first season was designed to stand on its own, and its ending works as an ending. Sybylla finally understands what her brilliant career means to her, chooses writing over marriage, and leaves home to pursue it. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t another story.
Miles Franklin herself discovered that choosing to become a writer was only the beginning. My Career Goes Bung gave Sybylla the same problem, turning the aftermath of My Brilliant Career into part of the fiction.
The limited-series label is still the biggest reason to be cautious about a second season. But Netflix has made exceptions before, and My Brilliant Career has something many limited series don’t: Miles Franklin already wrote Sybylla’s next chapter.
