The Woman in Cabin 10 Recap & Ending Explained: What Really Happened on the Aurora Borealis

The Woman in Cabin 10, a suspense thriller based on the internationally bestselling novel by Ruth Ware, arrives on Netflix with Keira Knightley in the lead as investigative journalist Laura “Lo” Blacklock.

Directed by Simon Stone (The Dig), the film unfolds aboard a luxury yacht where a glossy press assignment turns into a psychological puzzle. What begins as a story about legacy soon becomes a battle over truth, power, and the cost of pursuing both.

The Woman in Cabin 10 Full Recap

Laura Blacklock has returned to London traumatized from her last investigation, where a whistleblower was murdered after speaking to her. Seeking stability, she accepts a seemingly lighter assignment: covering a philanthropic foundation launch hosted by Norwegian shipping heiress Anne Lingstad, who is battling stage 4 leukemia. Anne’s husband, Richard Bulmer, invites a select group of elite guests on the yacht Aurora Borealis, en route to a gala in Norway.

Aboard the yacht, the guest list includes powerful figures:

  • Ben Morgan, Laura’s ex and the ship’s photographer
  • Adam Sutherland, a cynical heir
  • Thomas Heatherly and Heidi, an old-money couple
  • Lars Jensen, a tech magnate, and Grace Phillips, his media-conscious partner

On her way to dinner, Laura briefly hides in Cabin 10 to avoid Ben and encounters a blonde woman preparing to shower. Later that night, Laura shares a quiet conversation with Anne, who reveals she has stopped medication and asks Laura to look over her gala speech. Reading it, Laura discovers Anne’s intent to give away her entire fortune to charity, leaving nothing for Richard.

That night, Laura is jolted awake by muffled voices, a violent thud, and a splash. She rushes to her balcony and sees a woman’s body in the dark water. The ship goes into a controlled alert. Every guest and crew member is accounted for. The captain insists Cabin 10 is empty, its guest allegedly canceled days earlier. The blood Laura saw on the balcony divider vanishes. Cigarette butts that rolled onto her deck are gone. Richard urges her to rest, claiming Anne is too unwell for disturbance. The doctor questions her mental state.

Gaslighting on the Aurora Borealis

Laura refuses to back down. Days later, a hooded figure leads her below deck. The woman’s build and blonde hair match the one from Cabin 10, the one Laura believes drowned. When Laura pulls back the hood, she is stunned. The face appears to be Anne Lingstad.

But the woman avoids personal details Anne had shared. She says only one thing:
“Stop asking questions, or he’ll kill you.”
She knocks Laura unconscious and locks her away. Only later does Laura understand, this isn’t Anne. It is Carrie, a hired double wearing Anne’s clothes and hair.

What Really Happened to Anne Lingstad

The truth begins to take shape. Anne never planned this cruise. Richard did, after learning Anne planned to donate everything to charity and write him out of her will. With help from Lars, he used facial recognition to find Carrie, a near-identical woman. She agreed to impersonate Anne long enough to sign a new will in exchange for money, and under threats to her daughter.

When Anne discovered Richard and Carrie in Cabin 10, she confronted him. He panicked, struck her, and threw her overboard. The captain and her doctor helped cover it up, every trace Laura found, wiped.

Carrie’s Turning Point and Ben’s Sacrifice

Carrie, terrified for her daughter, eventually aids Laura. She leaves the cabin door unlocked, offering a single chance to escape. Ben, realizing Laura was right, tries to help her flee. But Dr. Meta intercepts him. Ben is killed with a syringe meant for Laura, making the conspiracy undeniable.

In a final act of resistance, Laura sprints to the deck and dives overboard. The freezing water nearly kills her. Richard assumes she has drowned.

She survives and swims to shore.

The Woman in Cabin 10 Ending Explained

Laura arrives at the gala believed to be dead. She walks onstage and begins reading Anne’s original speech, revealing the truth behind the foundation and Richard’s motive. Carrie finally breaks and confesses:

  • Anne Lingstad is dead, murdered by Richard.
  • Carrie was recruited to replace her and sign over the estate.

Richard panics, seizes Carrie, and attempts escape. Sigrid, head of security, fires but cannot stop him. Laura delivers the final blow, ending the threat. With Richard gone, the forged will is void. Anne’s true intentions stand: her fortune goes to charity.
