On July 29, Netflix closes out its Trainwreck anthology with a truly bizarre and unforgettable chapter: Storm Area 51. Directed by Jack Macinnes, this episode tells the story of the viral meme that dared the world to invade one of the most secretive military bases on the planet and nearly turned into a national security crisis.

It began like any other internet joke. In 2019, 20-year-old Matty Roberts created a Facebook event with a deadpan title: “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us.” What he didn’t expect was for the internet to take it seriously. Within days, the post exploded, first with thousands, then millions of users signing up to “attend” what was clearly meant as satire.
But the U.S. government wasn’t laughing. The Air Force issued warnings. The FBI monitored the activity. The Federal Aviation Administration restricted airspace. What had started as a sh*tpost spiraled into something much bigger, forcing officials to prepare for a potential confrontation in the Nevada desert.
