Prepare to be tested. All the Sinners Bleed, a dark and deeply atmospheric thriller from screenwriter Joe Robert Cole (Black Panther, American Crime Story), is coming to Netflix as a nine-episode limited series. Based on the critically acclaimed novel by S.A. Cosby, the show brings a chilling blend of Southern Gothic tension, crime drama, and moral reckoning to the screen, with a serial killer story that promises to be as unsettling as it is unforgettable.
The adaptation is backed by a powerhouse team, including Higher Ground Productions (founded by Barack and Michelle Obama), Amblin Entertainment, and Cosby himself.
A Sheriff, a Killer, and a Town on Edge
Set in a small Bible Belt town in southern Virginia, All the Sinners Bleed centers on the county’s first Black sheriff, a former FBI agent grappling with his past and his faith. When a series of ritualistic murders begins targeting Black residents, he finds himself at the heart of a disturbing investigation with spiritual overtones. The killer believes their mission is divine, and as the sheriff digs deeper, the truth becomes more tangled, exposing long-buried secrets and a community teetering on the edge of collapse.
The story doesn’t just explore crime; it interrogates justice, power, religion, and how institutions fail the people they claim to protect.
From Bestseller to Screen
Published in 2023, Cosby’s novel was an instant hit, a New York Times bestseller praised for its razor-sharp prose and unflinching look at race and violence in the American South. NPR called Cosby “one of the best-known names in the new, wonderfully diverse wave of crime fiction writers.” The book even made former President Obama’s summer reading list, and now, his production company is helping bring it to Netflix.
Joe Robert Cole will serve as showrunner, writer, and director for select episodes. Known for balancing complex characters with high-stakes storytelling, Cole is expected to bring a grounded but gripping tone to the series.
