Netflix Returns to Annecy Festival 2024 with Genre-Spanning Animation Slate

Netflix is heading back to the Annecy International Animation Film Festival this June, bringing an ambitious and diverse slate of premieres, sneak peeks, and behind-the-scenes sessions.

From animated extensions of iconic franchises to bold new original films and series, the streamer’s presence in Annecy underscores its growing influence across every corner of the animation spectrum — from preschool to prestige.

Following a strong awards season — with Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl taking home two BAFTAs and Arcane earning seven Annie Awards — Netflix’s animation division is returning to Annecy with momentum and a packed schedule of first looks, panels, and premieres.

First Looks and Premieres at Annecy

Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85

One of the most anticipated reveals comes in the form of Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85 — a brand-new animated series expanding the universe of Netflix’s flagship sci-fi hit. Showrunner Eric Robles will present a world-exclusive preview during the “Next on Netflix Animation” showcase on Wednesday, June 11, at Théâtre Bonlieu.

In Your Dreams

Director Alex Woo, production designer Steven Pilcher, and VFX supervisor Nicola Lavender will debut never-before-seen footage from In Your Dreams, a family adventure film that blends imaginative world-building with emotional storytelling. This panel also takes place during the June 11 Netflix Animation session.

Fixed – World Premiere

The festival will host the world premiere of Fixed, an adult animated comedy from Genndy Tartakovsky (Primal, Hotel Transylvania). Known for his genre-defying style, Tartakovsky brings his sharp wit and visual inventiveness to this irreverent new feature, screening on Wednesday, June 11.

Masterclasses, Panels, and Behind-the-Scenes Access

Raphael Bob-Waksberg Masterclass

On Thursday, June 12, BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg leads a masterclass that includes an exclusive preview of his upcoming adult animated series, Long Story Short. He’ll be joined by members of the creative team to discuss writing, tone, and what makes animation such a powerful storytelling tool.

Series Studio Focus: Full Animation Slate Revealed

For the first time, Netflix will host a dedicated Animated Series Studio Focus. On Thursday, June 12, executives from Netflix Animation — including John Derderian, Heather Tilert, Billy Wee, Dylan Thomas, and Dominique Bazay — will provide an inside look at the platform’s full animated series lineup. The session spans preschool (Dr. Seuss’s Horton!), family spectacle (Minecraft, Ghostbusters), adult action (Magic: The Gathering, Blue Eye Samurai Season 2), and new comedies like Haunted Hotel.

Work-in-Progress Highlights

  • Splinter Cell: Deathwatch – Based on Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy game franchise, this series will be featured in a special “Making Of” session.
  • 7 Bears – A behind-the-scenes look at the French preschool series from Folivari.

Netflix is also participating in the Official TV Films Competition with:

  • Astérix & Obélix: Le Combat des Chefs
  • Devil May Cry

In addition, Mononoke The Movie: Chapter II – The Ashes of Rage will be screened during Annecy’s Midnight Specials, a selection of bold, out-of-competition titles.
