Adam Sandler takes a step back in this hilarious and emotional teen friendship comedy and lets his daughters shine.
Adam Sandler continues his collaboration with Netflix with You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah. The actor, who is also producing the movie through Happy Madison Productions, takes on a supporting role in his last project while lending the spotlight to his real-life daughter Sunny.
It’s not the first movie where Sandler involves his whole family, but it’s the first where his daughters have a leading role rather than just a short appearance. Sandler plays Danny Friedman dad to Stacy and Ronnie Friedman, his real-life daughters Sunny and Sadie Sander. His real-life wife Jackie Sandler has a role in the movie as well. It’s a whole family affair.
Stacy Friedman and Lydia Rodriguez Katz have been best friends since the very first day of kindergarten. Both girls have always dreamed of having the most perfect Bat Mitzvah. Stacy is not popular, but not even a loser. The 13-year-old is still figuring out who she is, what she is certain about is her Bat Mitzvah will determine the rest of her life. She is not worried about her mitzvah project or reciting her haftorah. She’s worried about the party, which has to be perfect.
Stacy has a crush on Andy Goldfarb (Dylan Hoffman), one of the popular kids at her school. Stacy decides to respond on a dare by Andy jumping into a lake from a cliff, she instantly becomes a badass hero to the teenager witnessing. Things go south very quickly when, while coming out from the water, her bloody pad comes to the surface, and the boys led by Andy, make fun of the already humiliated girl. Stacy swears to Lydia her crush on Andy has officially ended, but when she later sees Lydia and Andy kissing at a party she gets furious. The truth is every girl at school has a crush on the boy. Stacy breaks her friendship with Lydia and is determined to break up the new couple. She will start scheming: for her mitzvah project she decides to volunteer in the senior home where Josh’s grandmother lives and the two will start to hang together, she’ll send him “accidentally” a few provocative photos, and critique Lydia’s experience with boys. The two will even get caught making out in the temple’s bimah. The real crisis will occur when at Lydia’s Bat Mitzvah, the wrong introduction video, done by Stacy, will be played. It will humiliate and embarrass Lydia and their friendship will be badly damaged.
Directed by Sammi Cohen You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah Based is based on the 2005 young adult novel of the same name written by Fiona Rosenbloom. It’s the perfect family movie but is specifically directed at a young audience. The script combines smart, funny jokes for young viewers and adults too.

The Comedy Teenager Movie Is Very Relatable
It portrays quite perfectly what it means to be a teenager in this time of Instagram and TikTok, having a crush on a boy, being embarrassed by your parents, fighting with your BFF over a boy, having a sister who is the only one who gets it, and understand who you are and what kind of person you want to be.
The Casting Has Been Perfect
Naturally, if you cast two real-life sisters and their father to play a family the chemistry is already there. The bickering between Sunny and Sadie is spot-on as well as they bond. Adam Sandler is practically playing himself, clothing included. In fact, in the movie, his wife even makes fun of his colorful shirts and his super-large basketball shorts. He is the ideal supporting and loving father, with charming dad jokes who still wants to spend time with his daughters, they are starting to feel embarrassed by him.
Idina Menzel is cast as his wife, again after Uncut Gems, loving supporting but strict as a mother of two. Sandler’s actual wife Jackie plays Lydia’s mother. Luis Guzmán plays Lydia’s father and reunites with Sandler again.
Special Mention
Sarah Sherman plays an incredibly funny and hilarious rabbi. She simply steals the spotlight. The scene where she is walking and running on the treadmill while guiding Stacy is one of the best of the whole movie.
The Movie Playlist Is Off The Charts
The songs used in You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah are another great addition to the feature. There are classics but also cool and current pop songs. We pass from Willow Smith, Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa Grouplove, Selena Gomez, Doja Cat, and many others.
The movie has a charm and sweetness that will make you wanna watch it with your family and friends more than once. You should stream it.
