Finally, a great comedy series on Netflix. We enjoy it so much that not only we watched it once for the review but we re-binge it again because this series deserve it.
Mavis Beaumont is a 38 plus-size assistant fashion stylist in Manhattan who aspires to become a lead stylist when she catches her photographer boyfriend Jacque in bed with a model, a thinner version of her. With the help of her friends, she moves out of their luxurious home and moves into a Brooklyn apartment with a peculiar roommate. Without the help of Jacque Mavis scrambles to find new clients but she is committed to making it into the fashion industry. To support her every step of the way her best friends: Khalil and Marley encourage her to be her best self, bolster her confidence, and help her learn how to seize the love, happiness, and success she deserves.
Mavis is always available to support and help style drag queens who perform at the neighborhood bar. Throughout the 8 episodes, Mavis rebuilds her life, her career, and she is forced at 38, to consider what she really wants in life and to thrive on her own terms.
Created by comedian Michelle Buteau and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (New Girl), Survival of the Thickest stems from Buteau’s hilarious collection of essays of the same name.
Finally, after supporting roles in Marry Me and Always Be My Maybe, Michelle steps in Survival of The Thickes in her leading role and she is phenomenal.
Michelle is not the only one who is incredible in this comedy series, the ensemble chemistry is off the charts: Bateau, Bell, and Smith create a perfect trio of friends that support and boost each other that everyone should have in their life.
The 8 episodes are 30 minutes long, a waste for this project, but the creators and writers were able to create engaging and solid storylines not only for Mavis but for every main and supporting character. The viewers are able to get attached and interested in every storyline.
The series is a love letter to love, accept yourself, and your body, to feel good in your own skin no matter what. Is directed to women who are approaching 40 who try to understand how to get their life together and start to question their relationship, neighborhood, and job or if they see and want something else for themselves.
In the cast, there are trans and non-binary performers, which may help people to understand the language and the culture better.
Survival of the thickest has a double meaning it does refer to plus-size bodies but also symbolizes how people need to develop thick skin, they need to go through pain in order to learn, grow and evolve from their experiences, don’t let them break you but learn from them. Did we mention the show is extremely funny too?
The 8 episodes are easily bingeable, we hope you’ll enjoy them just as much as we did.
